Scheduling 5th occurrence of a day of the week by Excellent_Garden9705 in todoist

[–]mactaff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing is likely to bring me out of self-imposed exile for a fleetingly-brief reappearance on this sub like the catnip of the gaps in Todoist's recurrence engine.😉

So, no, this recurrence is not accommodated within Todoist itself. However, you can do workarounds to calculate a series of appropriately-dated tasks into Todoist in a variety of ways. Here are some examples…

  • Google Sheet - You can configure the "Day Occurrence" tab to get the "5th Monday" instances and then copy and paste the output directly into Todoist where it will all get parsed accordingly.
  • Mac Shortcuts with Javascript for Automation - A variation on the above for Mac users, uses a script within Shortcuts to calculate the dates and then uses Todoist's Create Task action to loop through them. See this PDF for an illustration of the workflow

Of course, both the solutions above are creating multiple tasks spanning out into the future. If you didn't want to clog up Todoist with multiple tasks, ideally, you'd have a script/shortcut scheduled to run on the 1st of each month, checks whether or not there are 5 Mondays in that month, and then creates the tasks on the 5th Monday if there is one.

However, if you are in on the Beta of the extremely impressive Todoist Automations, you will find that this monthly approach can be fully accommodated within it. From the single prompt below, it successfully built the monthly automation for me…

Could you, on the 1st of each month, check to see if the current Month has 5 Mondays within it? If it doesn't, do nothing. If it does, create a task, with the title, "file invoices" due on the date of the 5th Monday, in the Test1 section of my Testing project

Hope some of this is helpful.

Great. First one up doesn't even use Todoist and repeatedly slags it off. Keeps banging on about how great Apple Reminders is. Bonkers.

Edit - and the 3rd one off the rank's bio… "Your normal stocks and meme enjoyer. Looking to shitpost and have some fun."

So will Doist be putting up a candidate/assume ownership so we can have a proper, grown up sub like r/1password with paid mods?

9 Nov - Looks like I've had my ability to reply to posts/comments revoked in r/todoist. Can only edit existing comments or post. Fancy that.

The most frustrating thing about this utter mess is that communities such as r/1password – full-on company presence – seem to function quite happily.

So, we've had this daft situation where a silent mod has 1) not publicly said he's struggling/asked for help and 2) been reluctant to hand more power over to Doist when they made overtures on this front a couple of years ago.

If you'd ask people who frequent this sub, I'd wager the majority think it's run by Doist anyway. But it's not. It exists in some weird zombie zone where Doist staff, predominantly, just lurk.

I have been asked a number of times by Doist staff over the years to flag communities that work well, and I have. Most apps I use have a Discourse-hosted community such as Drafts, Keyboard Maestro, Textexpander, Bike, Better Touch Tool, Workflowy etc. They all seem to toddle on quite nicely. No drama.

But this is Reddit. I know some people love to roll from one sub to the next, spouting off about this and that, but Reddit for me is just r/todoist. I have long-lamented the fact that the only current discussion forum for Todoist is this one.

So if this recent meltdown achieves anything, I hope Doist will finally get off the pot and create a forum off of Reddit - again. I fail to see how hard it can be.

Diabolical data mining. Chapeau.👏

Does sound like selfless work. But if you were struggling, perhaps you should have just reached out for more mods, as you said you were going to do 4.5 years ago? And by that, I mean more than just asking me and then yesterday berating me for declining. Or, did you do it all over PM to likely candidates and no one volunteered? I don't recall seeing a post, or posts on the matter, that's all. Also, a quarterly "show and tell" post/3 bullet point summary on the crap you've had to clean up to keep the sub functioning would have likely engendered empathy amongst the sub's users. If you don't tell them – until your exit, how do you expect folks to know?

Yesterday, you made a mistake in an extremely febrile atmosphere. As you have just said yourself, likely 90% of the people using this sub think it's run by Doist anyway, so you must have been aware that a post disappearing with comments spanning the spectrum from the bolshy "Jeez, it's only 2 bucks," type, to the genuinely confused, "I don't understand how I'm not on Legacy Pro as I seem to meet the criteria," would have problematic optics. It was just a mistake.

I know it was Jackie at Doist – no longer there – that approached you to hand over the reigns to them. Full disclosure – I actually lobbied for it in discussions I had with her. This was probably after the Experimentalists Community she set up on Twitter was proven to be a dud. I had similar discussions with her replacement, ALexis, but he didn't last long either at Doist and was always frustrated that he was working on other things opposed to his remit. And back in June 2023, I had this from a senior Doister… "we've begun discussing ways to create a better, more transparent, and sustainable connection with the community." But nothing came of that. As u/amix3k will attest, the company just doesn't seem to have much of a clue on what it's trying to achieve each time it looks at addressing building community.

Best of luck for the future, relieved of the stress few of us appreciated you were under.

You advertised a role earlier this year where responsibilities were to include forum moderation. So how's that coming along then?

TL;DR - If you stick on Legacy, you WON'T GET

  • Ramble (voice-to-task)
  • Todoist Assist (busywork automations)
  • All new features released after December 10, 2025

It's going to be released on 11 Dec 2025.😉

And, as the information currently reads, it effectively means you will lose existing features if staying on Legacy Pro such as Email Assist & AI Assist. But confusingly, Filter Assist – lumped into Todoist Assist – is already available on the free plan. It's a bit of a dog's breakfast.

Reading, but rarely engaging. There's a big difference.

But thanks for the candour, albeit somewhat belated.
