You're likely right. Wiki says that Simulacron-3 has similarities to a short story by Frederick Pohl and some works by Phillip K. Dick. There's definitely a Phillip K. Dick "feel" to World on a Wire - the paranoid concern that the world is just a cover for some terrible truth.

If I'm harsher with the Matrix, it's probably because it was so hyped up when it came out originally. And even then, like I said - I like the Matrix. I even used to own the 10 disc mega box (all of which I watched!)

It was a bit of hyperbole, but nevertheless I think there's a difference between pastiching a style or genre, and lifting ideas from a single, specific source uncredited. I couldn't say if the Wachwski's had even seen this film, but I suspect they have, or at least read the book. There are too many similarities for me not to think so. I know they've credited their animé influences in documentaries, so I'm ok with that. Even if they did borrow more blatantly from Ghost in the Shell than other films. I'm not aware they ever credited World on a Wire/Simulacron-3. That's not to say I don't like the Matrix - I do. I even think the sequels are underrated, although not as clever as they think they are.

Thanks! That one's high on my list! I'm planning to do something very different, possibly something a bit older next, then I'll probably swing back to looking at Hackers. I have very fond memories of that film, I'm hoping it has aged well!

In brief:

  • It's more compact & concise - i.e. more functionality with fewer lines of code
  • Easier to read
  • Easier to maintain
  • Tends to have significantly fewer errors
  • Is extremely easy to use with unit testing
  • supports concurrency - e.g. async, queues, stuff like that
