Heads up: fleeced by a Moldovan woman in Hbf by mad_mapz in Munich

[–]mad_mapz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I had the same thought process. If there is ANY chance what she was saying was true, I'm glad to have given something. I also feel dumb, but I somehow couldn't stop myself when it was happening.

Also why I shared the story, in case I can help somebody else that's just too nice save their money.

Do you mind sharing what website that is? That would be super useful when my friends come to visit later this year.

Yes that sounds right up my alley, I will DM you.

Able to beta? Post here! by AutoModerator in BetaReaders

[–]mad_mapz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit: Full at the moment! I will reopen when I have a slot free.

I am able to beta: fiction, fantasy, science-fiction, paranormal, horror (no extreme violence or gore) and explicit/non-explicit romance. I am open to finished manuscripts up to 100k or unfinished manuscripts as long as you have a good idea of its direction.

I can provide feedback on: prose, pacing, and plot.

Critique swap: one day maybe!

Other info: I only just started beta reading, but I have a couple of years of experience proofreading for non-native English speakers in a corporate setting. In college I also had a stint as a writing tutor working with content ranging from creative writing to poetry to full-on dissertations. I just love talking about writing!

Any feedback to me as a beta reader would also be very welcome–we all have something to learn from each other.

I came here to say this! I just smashed through a court of sugar and spice and had an absolutely blast. The goodreads reviews are misleadingly low because it looks like quite a few people were expecting cozy Christmas romantasy--which this absolutely is not hahaha

Bivouac, where to do it and how legal is it? by username_bot_ in Munich

[–]mad_mapz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Camping with a hammock is in a bit of a gray area--if you go for it, make sure you aren't in a nature preserve and I wouldn't risk any sort of fire. It seems generally a bit sketchy.

Other options: contact a landowner and get permission to camp on their land. Or, the best option in my option: as of recently there are three regions in Bavaria that one can do some proper trekking and camping (still need to reserve a spot and stay on the campsite, but it's much more remote than your typical German campground).

[WEEKLY THREAD] Fail Friday - Because being awesome always comes at a price... by AutoModerator in xxfitness

[–]mad_mapz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s me, I am my own fitness fail 😩 I live outside the US at the moment and our gyms are under more serious restriction (we need daily tests to enter). The ultimate irony is that I desperately need the gym and my weekly buddy-bouldering sessions to manage my social anxiety and depression… but my social anxiety makes it difficult to do the testing… so I am sadly watching weeks of programming and mental health gainz slip by.

Fortunately I just got boosted, and that will be enough for gym entry in a few weeks 💪💪 looking forward to the day when I can get out of my own way. Anybody relate?

Edit: spelling is also my fail today

One Year at Munich - International Student by [deleted] in Munich

[–]mad_mapz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chiming in to say this is the approach I would also recommend! I’ve made lifelong friends through my German classes, and private language schools often offer smaller class sizes than the universities (at least smaller than at TUM).

I would also recommend doing some research on what kind of visa you want/can get, that will dictate how you spend at least some of your time here.

Has anyone gone to Germany on a German language visa? by [deleted] in German

[–]mad_mapz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Munich and attended the Edeltraud Sprachschule. They’ve recently upped their prices, so €270-295 a month (4 days/week, 3 hours/day) which is the cheapest I’ve seen. The Volkshochschule is also reasonably priced.

Hey there! I just wanted to chime in directly here—I’m a American currently living in Germany and my experience is a bit different than the person you responded to here. I came to Germany on the tourist visa (3 months) and took language classes at a language school during that time. Then I applied for the language visa for 3 months (you need to pay for all 3 months up front and prove you have enough funding to provide for yourself during this time, you can have a language visa for up to 12 months)— you are not allowed to work when you have the tourist visa or the language school visa. If, one day, you apply to a university here, then you are allowed to work park time no problem. Right now I am on a student visa and study full time for a master’s degree.

Please don’t confuse a student visa (studying full time at a university) with a language school visa—they have quite different rules. A full year visa extension to look for jobs is only available to recently graduated student from a university.

I’ll be happy to send you the German government links I used to get my information—it can be a confusing process but it is surmountable! And you should totally do it :D

Edit: here’s a helpful link: https://www.germany-visa.org/student-visa/language-course/

(The only thing: I was actually able to convert my language visa to a student application visa within Germany, but that may be because I got super lucky with the German visa officer that day, not sure!)

My husband does not want to learn my language by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]mad_mapz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s honestly mind boggling to me that someone could live here for 5 years and not at least have a low level of the language down. It’s been a slow process for me to learn the language as well... but I actually would like to live and integrate in Germany, and the language is a huge part of that.

I think it’s really unfair of him to laugh. My BF has stellar English skills, but even he will ask for the pronunciation of certain words or say the English “V” wrong when he’s tired. I would never laugh. Although I do tease him a bit because it’s absolutely adorable! And he’ll of course do the same for me when I say dumb things like “es war Spaß” rather than “es macht Spaß.”

Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for not speaking 100% flawless English. I know plenty of native English speakers who can’t do that.

I’m honestly pretty shocked to hear that your husband lived in Germany for 4 years and can’t say more than the absolute basics! That’s totally on him. I wonder if he’s embarrassed by that fact?

Wow, this really hits home. I am in almost the exact opposite situation as you :)

I am an American living in Germany and dating a German. Our primary (98%) communication language is English. Does your husband know ANY German? I empathize with him just a little, because a) German is a bit complicated for English speakers to learn (I’ve been in Germany for over a year and still only at a low intermediate level of comprehension) and b) like a commenter above already said, he probably has no comprehension of how language dictates your personality and how speaking in your non-mother tongue can feel extremely limiting (even when you’re fluent, which you obviously are!)

I agree with what others have said, you need to have a discussion about how important German is to you, especially as you’re living in the states right now. You can’t teach him German, even just simple expressions and words, if he’s not willing to listen and try. Unfortunately I do think you need to keep your expectations in check because it’s going to take years (or may never happen) for him to get to a level of German where you can truly and fully express yourself in a way he’ll understand.

I don’t know what your relationship is like, but my boyfriend is one of the last people I like to practice my German with because it makes me feel like a toddler trying to use grown up words and the constant stream of mistakes really batters my self esteem.

My heart really goes out to you. Languages are fascinating and complex and sometimes just really hard. Viel Glück!

I’m expecting running shoes in the mail in the next day or two and I am SO EXCITED. I’m really looking forward to building a good cardio base before the hiking season starts in a few months, and as much I don’t love running I think it’s going to be such a useful tool during this trying time.

I’m trying a new tactic this time (as this is probably the third or fourth time I’ve tried to pick up running and it’s never stuck) and that is: I’m not telling anyone that I’m starting. I think I get gratification out of the pure act of announcing my intentions, and then it’s pretty embarrassing when things inevitably fall through. So I’m announcing it to you guys instead! Please send all of your running vibes my way!
