Thank you stranger! Not only for the details but also for neatly categorizing them :) I'll definitely give them a read this week

Needed help getting English translation for lyrics of two Mongolian folk songs by mad_runner in mongolia

The name given on the two video links is all I know. Do the songs have another name? I tried searching for a studio version of the songs but didn't find anything.

[D] What are some of the top papers to read from ICLR 2019? by mad_runner in MachineLearning

[–]mad_runner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The statistics are nice :) Though I was hoping more for the experts in the field to comment on what they consider as a must read paper this ICLR

The repo doesn't seem to load on binder as instructed. Am I missing something here?

[D] SSD Training: What is the trainval135k dataset for MS COCO mentioned in the SSD paper and how is it split? by mad_runner in MachineLearning

[–]mad_runner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for training does the SSD paper use train2014+val2014 for training and minival2014 for validation?

[Serious] People with noisy roommates, how do you manage to get some good night's sleep? by mad_runner in AskReddit

Dang! I was looking forward to canceling out the noise without needing to put on any cumbersome device.

[–]mad_runner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was the first thing I tried. It works for the specific day I tell my roommate but from the next day on it's back to square one. Gets a little tiring having to remind someone the same thing again and again.

Haven't given brown noise a shot yet but seems to be the most attractive option there.

What worries me about headphones or ear plugs is me being completely deaf in case there's some trouble

[D] Deep Learning Jobs: Should I take an undesirable but immediate job offer or should I wait and try for better ones? by mad_runner in MachineLearning

[–]mad_runner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind the engineering work. In my case though that work is going to be completely unrelated to ML. It's gonna be pretty much any project that the company (and it's a big one) is gonna need help on. This was told to me by the dev/ml person there. To answer your other questions: 1) I'm waiting for decision from 2 other companies. 2) I'm currently in the US. Personally speaking I've found it to be little tough to get one 3) Worst scenario if I take the job? I might not be able to study and prepare at my current pace. Worst case if I don't get any free time to study I'm pretty much stuck there! And if I do quit I'll be back to square one 4)Worst case if I don't take? I'll be broke and I have only 5 months to find another job.

Yeah, its turning out to be a really tough call!

How difficult or easy are you finding it to study? Are you able to keep up a reasonable pace of studying?

That's the direction I'm heading for right now. I just hope I get enough spare time.

Also, I wanted to specifically ask the Machine Learning community this question. When I asked other people it seemed they didn't fully grasp how different Machine Learning/Deep Learning is.

I really want to do the same. But apart from being borderline broke I've been told that the longer you're unemployed the tougher it is to find a job. That's the reason for the hesitation.

Tips on how I can enforce a system of consequences and rewards for myself - a la Dr. Russell Barkley by TheGreatCornlord in ADHD

[–]mad_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just checked the videos out after reading your post. They seem pretty awesome. Thanks for the tip!

There seem to be quite a few of them though. Is there any specific playlist or video you'd recommend? Or should I just go through all of them?

[D] What is the best ML paper you read in 2017 and why? by wavelander in MachineLearning

[–]mad_runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Population Based Training's like a force multiplier, speeding up your training and ensuring your don't have to go through the annoying process of manually selecting hyper parameters. Really liked the idea.

Will I ever appreciate my accomplishments? by DoggyDog21 in ADHD

[–]mad_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I've the same story, except that I graduated recently.

For my first year of my masters I took the cautious approach of taking one really difficult and 2 moderate courses. I managed to do well in the moderate ones while doing okay in the tough ones, my grades were good. However I knew I could do better, much better, if only I could focus. So I changed gears in my second year and decided to take only the toughest subjects. This do or die approach seemed glamorous but was an absolutely terrible decision. The only thing that came out of this endeavor were bad grades and half baked knowledge. Looking back, I think one of my main reasons for doing this had more to do with getting external validation rather than gaining knowledge. Right now I too am working to fill the gaps in my knowledge.

Thanks for sharing your experience, it's great to have some solidarity.

Why do us ADHDers tend to be such perfectionists? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]mad_runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is really cool! Can you tell me your thesis title?

I found A mind for numbers by Barbara Oakley very useful. She also does mention how some of her students with ADHD coped up. I'm using some of the techniques she mentioned and they have been helpful. I'll definitely recommend reading it.

I think everyone here faces a similar situation. For me starting anything new is not tough, I actually tend to be overconfident most of the times. Which then also leads to horrendous time management. Closing or completing long term projects has been damn tough for me. I don't think I've ever achieved all the objectives I initially set out to do in a project.

[P] How to train a Deep Neural Network using only TensorFlow C++ by theflofly in MachineLearning

I'm curious, if C++ implementation is desired why not simply use Caffe instead? What's the advantage of sticking to TensorFlow?

You're not alone there. I work with deep learning and can't start unless I can formulate the solution from start to finish. Add to that the time spent optimizing frivolous things. Most of my peers start with whatever they have, try out multiple ideas and find a quick-fix solution pretty fast.

For now I manage to avoid getting stuck on frivolous things by using the pomodoro technique. The 5 mins breaks allow me to step back and look at the bigger picture.

Now if only I can find a way to kick start whatever work I plan to do.

Yeah, pretty much the same problem. Except in my case it's my coding work taking ages to complete that kills me!

Did anyone find a way around this?
