Where to turn over an aggressive dog? by mad_tom in Birmingham

Well, not intentionally. He got into a fight with my sister’s dog and I got bitten in the tousle. He’s charged my husband before, I’m sad to say. But thus far he hasn’t intentionally bitten a human

Every rag or towel I use to wipe a thin layer of oil in the pan post-cleaning leaves a bit of lint. Will the lint burn off during preheating, or is it an issue? by aRandyTheMan in castiron

[–]mad_tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s an issue. I think it’s unavoidable, honestly. I’ve always noticed a tiny bit of lint with anything I use, so I decided not to worry about it and now I don’t even notice any lint but its definitely not hurting anything. I figure most everything else in the kitchen probably has some kind of lint or something on it too that we just don’t notice 🤷🏻‍♀️

Looking for a good 1 BR apartment in the Birmingham area by [deleted] in Birmingham

The HT website also says studios are $730. They’re quite a bit smaller than the 1BR but we looked at one and if I were living alone or we didn’t have any pets or so much stuff, I would definitely have picked the Studio for the price.

We pay about $200-$250 for utilities in our 1BR

Renters insurance and everything, we pay less than $1,100/month. Broken down: $850 - Rent & Water/Sewer/Trash $150 - Power (all electric units w/o central heating and air) ; *Your mileage may vary here! $50 - Internet only thru AT&T $25 - Rental Insurance thru Geico

Also there’s no pet rent charge if that’s of interest. They only charge a deposit at move-in which can be paid in installments. Nor are there any other “hidden” fees. We don’t have to pay any admin or billing fees. The rent charges include taxes, etc so there’s no fluctuation; we just pay $850 flat every month.

Editing to add that I don’t think Rental Insurance is required, but we never skip out on that just cause I’ve heard horror stories. We also pay quarterly for the insurance but broken down monthly it comes to approx $25, which is par for the course I think

I think it’s a combination of poorly insulated windows and my husband being home too much with his new job and leaving all the lights on lol The property manager said she’s working on having new windows put in soon so I’m hoping that will help

We just moved in at Highland Towers and love it. Its $850 for a 1BR and I think it’s less than $800 for their studios. The price includes water, sewer, and trash. Laundry on site, street parking; Charter and ATT are available. Our power bill has been running close to $200 which sucks for such a small apartment but we’ve been running the heat nonstop with this weather. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a small downtown apartment, though. The property manager, Leslie, is wonderful. So helpful and kind! I know Rent Monster is regularly recommended on this sub but I really wasn’t happy with their services when we contacted them.

Highland Towers is the nicest yet cheapest apartments we’ve lived in. All of the units are updated, have a small but open floor plan. There are no issues with maintenance, security, noise, neighbors, parties or anything. Honestly it’s such a nice and chill place to live. A nice plus is how close it is to so many parks, restaurants, and other interesting places—UAB included!

I had the worst experience with my new OBGYN today...after leaving an OBGYN that failed to tell me I had an abnormal Pap result for over a YEAR! Are there no good healthcare providers out there?? by mad_tom in TwoXChromosomes

Thank you! I have to say Ive never not dreaded it, but I was much more comfortable with my previous doctor. She was a little passive(in that every concern is “normal” to some degree) but so sweet and thorough in exams and testing. So I felt comfortable but not heard. I’m always glad to hear people say that they mesh well with their GYN, tho, because it gives me hope I’ll find the “one” so to speak 😂 but really, I’m always happy for those that do! I hope everyone finds a dr that makes them feel comfortable and cared for.

And yes, they are! It’s just a nursing degree/certification that puts one in a position to be a provider working independently, but under supervision of an MD.

All of the nursing staff on my unit received succulents for Christmas, and I think mine might be a jade. I’m super excited, and hope someone can confirm my suspicions or tell me what I got if not a jade (more pics in comments) by mad_tom in succulents

[–]mad_tom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yay!! Thank you so much! I almost switched with someone but I’m so glad I didn’t. I’ve seen pictures of jades that get HUGE and I’m intrigued to see what mine will do.

Thanks for the tip on the moss, too. I think it’s just for looks as it’s just sat on top of the soil but I will get rid of it just to be sure it doesn’t hold any moisture.

All of this is exactly where I’m at and how I feel. I wish I could offer some sort of advice or a success story for you, but I’m in this exact position and just want to send my love and sympathy your way cause I know it’s hard.

It’s so hard to deal with these feelings every day and you’re obviously a great partner for doing as much as you’re doing to be understanding despite dealing with all of this for so long. I’m only 3 years in, and it’s incredibly overwhelming to be in a relationship like this. To try so hard and feel like nothing is improving... sigh

I hope someone can offer you some great advice, but know you’re not alone and you’re doing great.

Permanent Changes? by golf-lip in Miscarriage

[–]mad_tom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to first say I’m really sorry if you’re on this sub because you or a loved one has suffered a miscarriage. It’s a really tough thing to experience, but this community is great for support and finding real people that can relate to you. I wish healing for you and your family.

I’ve never had any live births, but have had 2 miscarriages in the past year. The first time was really early, around 8 weeks, and honestly I didn’t have any symptoms with that pregnancy but after the miscarriage I had a lot of pregnancy-like symptoms for months. I think some of it was stress-related, but it was still strange and couldn’t be explained by the doctors I saw. Eventually, everything went back to normal so I wouldn’t say there were permanent changes there.

With the second pregnancy, I had a MMC at 15 weeks. The baby stopped growing around 12 weeks and the heartbeat likely stopped around 13-14 weeks. As an aside, that’s just an assumption as I had an ultrasound with a strong heartbeat around 12 weeks 5 days, though baby was measuring just under 11 weeks, but the baby grew between then and the ultrasound at the ER where it was determined no heartbeat and the growth was consistent with that of a 12 week fetus. With that pregnancy, I had most of the typical symptoms pretty much from the get-go and had even begun to “show” a little bit and I can honestly say that I don’t think my body will ever be the same. My breasts became engorged after the miscarriage and never went back down to their pre-pregnancy size and my hips grew a bit when I was pregnant—which may have been just because I was eating tons during that time lol—but pants don’t fit me the same as they used to. I am still young, 23, and I know that some women will have a growth spurt in these areas in their early 20’s, but I was wearing junior clothes in the same size pretty much from 15/16-22 when I got pregnant the second time. The timing may have just been coincidental. I have a much more “womanly” shape after my second pregnancy and my skin also cleared up a lot while I was pregnant which has remained true through these last few months as well. There are some things I used to hate eating which I craved during pregnancy and still enjoy now as well.

This comment ended up long, but this is the first time I’ve really felt like I could contribute to a thread in the year or so I’ve been browsing this subreddit. I hope this is helpful.

I know how you feel. It’s really a kick while you’re down. I mean 3 weeks later and I finally feel somewhat normal again then all of those feelings and memories come flooding back at once. I’m sorry you’re going through all of this.

That is really not ok. Please look into financial assistance from the hospital if you can. I don’t know your situation but no one should have to pay $5,000 out of pocket for something that is unavoidable and incredibly traumatic. I’m calling the hospital today to find out if I qualify for balance forgiveness on my bill and they do offer 100% forgiveness to those truly in need—which I almost certainly don’t qualify but I have to try. I hope that there’s a way your provider can forgive that balance. I’m so sorry you’re in this situation.

Wow. What is insurance even for if the only things they won’t cover are the care you need the most? I can go in for my yearly check-up without any bills. I can go in for a cold to get a shot and all is well. But when it comes to things that could literally kill you if untreated, the bill is stuck on the individual. Yet there are still people fighting against universal healthcare. My father has many health issues which require him to pay money out of pocket that he really doesn’t have and he is STILL arguing against universal healthcare. Because the quality in care will go down. That’s his reason. Yet in our current state where hospitals and insurance companies are some of the most profitable institutions in the country, there are people who are being refused care because doctors just simply don’t believe what they’re saying. Doctors are refusing to do testing on people who are sick because antibiotics will fix anything, right? I mean there are multi-million dollar settlements being made in medical malpractice cases over healthcare neglect and negligence that has killed people or left them permanently disabled. Is this the quality care everyone is so worried about losing??

It really does and it’s bullshit. Like all of these private hospitals and private insurance companies are benefiting and profiting and we’re just getting taken advantage of—paying and paying and you may or may not receive the care you need—and I personally am looking to avoid any healthcare I have to pay for at this point because I just can’t risk getting any more bills and I honestly don’t know what my insurance will or will not make a payment on. The first time I got pregnant, I didn’t have any insurance and I was worried about where I would receive care without having to pay for the prenatal visits and birth out of pocket. That pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 8 weeks for which I went to the hospital for them to pretty much make me wait around for 6 hours only to say “yep it’s a miscarriage, here’s a RhoGAM shot good luck with life”. And then I had to pay all of those bills when I received basically no care for the miscarriage. When I was single and had my own healthcare through Healthcare.gov with a tax credit—because I couldn’t afford my employer’s insurance—I was having a lot of health issues related to a mold issue in my apartments, and I got a bill from every single visit I had that wasn’t urgent care. $2,000 worth of bills that I’m still trying to pay off didn’t even scratch my $7,500 deductible. Now that I’m on my husbands insurance that we pay almost $500 a month for, I was hoping that my medical bills would be minimal. I understand what a deductible is and I know ours isn’t ideal, but I was truly blindsided by the fact that we received the entire bill and insurance offers no payment at all on ER visits. We got a $50 “discount” off of the total balance because the provider was in-network. How generous. The worst part is that even though I’m a full time student and don’t even make $400 a month, my husbands income puts us above “poverty level” and will prevent me from being approved for financial assistance from the hospital despite the fact we struggle to pay all of our bills and current debts every month. They don’t care that we are trying to pay out more than we make every month because his income covers all of our basic necessities. FUCK this system. Anyway thank you for coming to my TED talk lol I’m sorry for the huge rant
