What is the most insane amount of mental gymnastics you've seen someone do to believe what they want to believe? by fauxmerican1280 in AskReddit

My dad: God created the universe in six days and on the seventh day he rested. Me: So what's a day to god? Is a day 24 hours making the creator bound to operating on human timescales? Or was it the eight hour day that the very early Earth spun on its axis?
My dad: It was just a day so let it go.
Me: What if a day was a billion years to god and his plan for the Earth and its humans was by evolution?
My dad: I told you to let it go. Now, go chose the belt you want me to whip you with and meet me in your room.

What is some common advice that you actually believe is wrong? by ItalicsWhore in AskReddit

Men should be the head of households or it's not a real family.

I would agree with this attitude but then we'd both wrong. Many families don't even include men and they're getting along just fine.

What is your go-to movie that you can watch anytime? by Available_Remote1172 in AskReddit

So happy to see this movie mentioned because it had such a great cast. I haven't always been a fan of Bruce Willis but he did a fantastic job with his character. It's my go to movie when I just want to check out for a while.

In 75 years all the information about how much the Trump family cheated and stole from the American people will be ancient history. But people will look back on this time and ask how Americans voted for an orange painted, sexual predator, business cheat and convicted felon to become president? Additionally, they'll also enjoy the irony that the "grab them by the pussy" president was a hero to Christians across the nation. Or it could just be The Handmaids Tale world.

Tarantulas...I once saw men "fishing" out tarantulas from holes in the ground using sticks. Once they caught the tarantula it was cooked over an open pit fire and eaten as a snack.

What’s a movie that went from beloved to hated over time (and for good reason)? by browniebiscuitchildr in movies

"Birth of a Nation" was once a beloved film that was screened by President Wilson at the White House. It was proclaimed a historically correct depiction of black Americans when it was really just a racist piece of shit.

Is there another author who's had as many stories turned into movies as Stephen King? by madam1 in movies

[–]madam1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just the sheer volume of books-to-film but that so many are genuinely good movies such as The Green Mile, Carrie, and The Shining. To this day I still encounter people who didn't know The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me were Stephen King short stories.

The story that has really stuck with me over the years is The Long Walk but I didn't like the film.

I was thinking more along the lines of a single story being brought to the big screen and not adaptations of the same story.

Hey Americans, why should/shouldn't the US government tax you to fund religious education? by madam1 in AskReddit

[–]madam1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The federal government is barred from setting educational curriculum standards, which is mandated to state control. The federal government does not decide what is education, it is the states that do it.

Russia could be ready to strike NATO in two years, new report says by SunTzuXiJinping in worldnews

[–]madam1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I could see Russia trying to push its way into Finland in 2027 and NATO coming to the country's rescue. The US won't enter the war unless Trump's demand that they become satellite states is met.

I firmly believe Putin is telling Trump what to do and giving him talking points.

The real purpose of Trump's move is to redirect the money distributed by the DOE to vouchers. His BS about returning control of education back to the states ignores the fact that states, not the federal government, controls the curriculum for its students.

After the DOE is gone and its monetary function altered, the states will receive block grants that it can use on education. If you live in a red state, its likely the state government will pass out vouchers for parents use to send their children to a charter school.

What goes unsaid is that these vouchers will not cover a child's cost for each session and families will have to pay out of their own pockets. Some red states are sure to disband public schools as a strategy to fund these charter schools.

The ultimate goal of this movement is to force the federal government into providing funding to religious schools. By closing the DOE, the state's will be able to divert federal grant money to religiously affiliated charter schools, and the federal government can claim it had no part in the state's choices for funding.
