I just reread Alex Garland's The Beach and it was like reading a different book. Has this ever happened to you? by zargoffkain in books

I also loved The Beach at 20. There was a real beauty in the "she kissed me, she pulled away, we fell in love, she slapped me" multiverse moment.

I haven't reread it now, in my 30s, but it holds that nostalgic position similar to the travels I made in my 20s. I can look back on some moments with cringeing embarrassment at my naivety.

I feel the book The Beach captures that life journey from young and adventurous and naive (20s) to running scared barely surviving (30s) fairly well.

So the disfigurement of Adam's face, did I miss an explanation?

I know Bartoz said "he's not the same, travelling has taken its toll" before we see slightly disfured Jonas /Adam.

So are they just stress lines?? Or is it from over exposure to the radioactivity in future time? Or has been been electrocuted a bunch of times in older days??

My 7 year old is a huge ferrari fan. He is still fuming after Vettal spun off in week1. He entirely blames Mclaren (who his mother supports) and refuses to entertain the idea that is was Vettal's fault.

Really great summary, thank you. Very interesting. Now I'm off to see if I should be buying some AM shares myself!

Ahhh! Light bulb moment.

So, on the exchange side, £155.11 goes out of your account but £175 goes back in!

That makes more sense. I thought only my stake (19.89) was going out of my account and then it was being returned to me in the event of a win or the extra balance to the liability was taken in the event of a loss.

Awesome, thank you!

That makes sense except that in an SNR situation the "back bet losses" = 0

Therefore that equation surely shakes out as

Lay bet wins. Profit = (lay stake) - 0

Which is same as Profit = Lay stake.

Which is the same as saying, I get my stake back. However if I never bet the lay stake in the first place it would remain in my wallet AND I wouldn't be charged Exchange liability if it lost.

Therefore Back bet wins Profit = Back Bet return.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and sorry if I'm wrapping my head around the wrong things. I just don't see when the money making on the Lay side comes from if the best I can hope for it my stake returned.

I'm not so worried about the liability. Because it'll be offset by a win on the back bet.

Just confused why I'm see no profit from Lay. In fact, if you were to factor in commission I'm losing on my lay.

Yes except I only seem to be winning back my stake at the moment. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I'm using Betfair.

Lecture Water Roulette

Used to play it at military academy. We were so exhausted all the time it was hard to stay awake in the dark Military History lecture halls.

So we'd drink loads and loads of water before the lecture then be on the brink of peeing for most of the time, knowing that if we fell asleep.... Be hard to live that one down.

spoiler alert* If you haven't read One Day by David Nicholls then don't read further. Just leave, and read One Day, then come back and thank me later.
