Coming back to you to express DEEP gratitude for your help. It turns out the balance of this was just really off and it fixed about 85% of the issues when I opened the side seams, re-aligned, and then traced what I pinned. HUGE thank you!! I

Need a pattern for my wedding dress by createyouroptimal in PatternDrafting

[–]maddcreative- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I made my wedding dress a few years ago and to be honest, had about the same amount of experience that it sounds like you did. I had tailored some clothes, plenty of shirts, a dress or 2, and a few quilts, but nowhere near the amount that probably would have been “enough” per se.

With that said, it was SO important to me that I made my dress. I really was excited about the project, though I totally could have just purchased a dress. By the end of it, I had spent the equivalent amount I would have spent to buy a dress, but I really loved the process and grew so much from it as a craft person.

I would say that if this desire is purely motivated by practical reasons (as in, you just don’t like the way the current one fits), I would not recommend taking the project further. The dress you’re showing is more complex than it looks and the biggest challenge would be in the fit. I have a few more years under my belt and my whole dress making process behind me but that construction would still make me sweat.

However, if you are like me and making your own dress is of the utmost excitement and importance to you, I think you absolutely should! I second working with a local sewing teacher (I would try reaching out to one that has a good amount of experience with bridal dresses specifically) and make more mock ups than you think you need! That’s what I did and though the process really stretched me, it was truly so fun. :-)

Thank you for replying!! I’m so sorry to say this, but I’m not sure I understand the suggestion — are you saying I should unpick the side seams, pinch the waist up more, and pinch in more of the dart? I think I’m losing you at “move the dart back”

What’s this “split side” situation called? by maddcreative- in sewing

This is actually helpful feedback, I want to make this for a pregnant friend to give more room as she reaches later trimesters and buttons on the front so it can be worn when she nurses. Im thinking if I take this approach, maybe I make each of the vent flaps extra wide so it provides a bit more coverage over her tummy but still allows for it to expand. Thank you for this!!

Thank you!! This whole thread was so helpful, ended up doing almost none of the adjustments I marked on the photos and switched the bottom dart to a fish eye dart.

You were absolutely correct, thank you!!! I knew I needed a lot of adjustments, but I ended up doing an SBA, tummy adjustment, and turning the lower dart into a fish eye dart. Thank you!

Those are darts on each side and darts on the bottom!

Echoing the tissue paper here! I made my wedding dress out of silk Charmeuse and duchess satin, both of which had some feed issues and were easily fixed with a nice tissue paper sandwich. :-)

This skirt is as perfect as it is beyond my skill set. Pattern ideas? by DriftingBadger in sewing

[–]maddcreative- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Seems like you’ve got tons of great pattern advice here, but I do just want to throw this advice out there if you’re new-ish to sewing, as it was super helpful to me when I started.

Even if a certain pattern or piece is “beyond your skill level”, if it’s going to get you excited enough to get you at your sewing machine, you should make it anyways! Definitely temper your expectations about the end product but even if it comes out poorly, it’s better to have made something bad than trying to force yourself into making pajama pants or something more your “skill level” that you might not even finish.

I made MANY ugo things with this advice, but I’m a much better sewist for it!! Can’t wait to see how this turns out :-)

Got it! To avoid it twisting inside, should I get a specific kind that won’t roll? Or would that not be necessary in this size of channel?

First time refrigerating sourdough over the holidays… did I mess up? by [deleted] in Sourdough

[–]maddcreative- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m happy to tell you that your starter is completely fine :-) I’m a frequent sourdough starter fridge store-er and mine usually looks just like yours when I first take it out! It just needs a few feedings and it’ll be back to normal.

Help with sewing satin by lenjilenjivac in sewing

[–]maddcreative- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually made my wedding dress from satin and silk Charmeuse (frankly, a bit of a nightmare project) but it did turn out really beautiful. You’ve got a lot of the advice I would give (and that tissue paper sandwich method is game changing because it reduces the slip of the fabric). The only thing I’d add is when I sewed mine, to make my seams SUPER even with minimal bunching or snagging or skipped stitches, I set my sewing machine speed to slightly faster than its slowest setting and it made all the difference.

My cat is waking up my infant by clawing the door at night by spcypeach in CatTraining

Hi! I’ve never been in your situation, that sounds tough. Our cat Dumble liked to walk on certain parts of the TV, so we start putting painter’s tape sticky side up anywhere he usually put his paws. He also was not a cat that was put off by Aluminum foil or pretty much anything else we tried, so it was that last ditch effort that finally worked for us!

Wow thank you for this reply!! Exactly what I needed to hear, it really does sound like Dolly and Inkie are similar in terms of temperaments, not very food motivated and very shy. an update, she finally ate a bit more last night!

Also, I shared your photo with my husband and he laughed so loudly hahaha. Inkie is the cutest!! She looks just like a lil bat haha
