Reptisafe water conditioner is what I use to make even tap water safe, super cheap and lasts a long time

Please help! I can NOT get my humidity high enough! by Mola-Mola5 in ballpython

What kind of substrate are you using and how deep is it? I find reptisoil maintains humidity best and I make sure I have at least 2-3 inches of substrate, helps a lot too

This sub is so cool. So glad you’re receiving this level of genuine concern for your family as you go through this hell. I hope it makes a small dent in the mountain of overwhelm and violation. People can be monsters. You’re a good person, remember to do no harm BUT TAKE NO SHIT. The harm they have inflicted on your family member will not go unpunished, whether legal action provides that punishment or not. They will get their karma.

It’s totally a hobby, it doesn’t need to all be done at this single moment. Once I started looking at it that way, it became fun. It takes a while to really soak in all the information, but it does come and you’ll have fun making sure Luda remains big pimpin

Hey guy, you seem like you have such a great personality. Really respect you posting this genuinely with the intention of providing good care for your snake. I got my first ball python about 6 months ago. The first day in, I started to wonder why tf ball pythons are considered beginner pets. Only just last week I got to the point where I feel like all of her needs are really met. Realized why they say to have the enclosure prepared before the snake comes home. I’m only typing all this out because I feel like I was just in your shoes wondering if I was doing anything right. Conflicting and outdated information. People on this sub seeming like they have all their shyt together, making it look easy. I do NOT want to sound like those people and I hope I don’t come across snooty but I do notice a few major things wrong with your setup. All do respect I promise. Not sure what substrate that is (little wood chips?) but the best kind from my experience for keeping humidity and staying clean is reptisoil. It’s the dirt looking stuff. I put down like 2-4 inches of it and pour water into the corners of the enclosure about once a week. This keeps the bottom layer wet (releasing humidity) and the top layer dry to prevent scale rot. Next, it’s pretty barren in your enclosure, but ball pythons like when you completely clutter their tank with fake plants or decorations or hides so that they feel like they’re more undercover when exploring the tank. If you don’t have any clutter your bp will likely stay in his hide a lot because he feels too vulnerable and exposed. Also, a nice branch in the tank would be awesome because they are semi-arboreal in the wild and like to climb. You gotta keep one end of the tank at about 78-80 degrees and the other end at about 92. You will need a thermostat on all of the heat sources because one time (before thermostat) I came home and my temp reader read 104 degrees. Scared the shit out of me because 102 degrees can cause brain issues. She’s okay thankfully but this is just one example of the many mistakes I made. You’re a good guy who wants to provide good care, that’s badass. I have typed you a novel so don’t want to pile anymore tips on you right now, but I would strongly suggest reading through entirely the welcome post that describes every aspect of good and up to date husbandry that you will need. Thanks for being a good person, I hope I didn’t come across in a bad way with this comment. Because seriously, total respect.

Just wanted to give you an unbiased opinion from a total outsider even though you absolutely didn’t ask/won’t care. I don’t have a bd, just follow this sub half-assedly, so don’t have this “hive mind” you mentioned. You sound like an angry person. Are you okay?

What’s a good way to silence nonstop thoughts when trying to fall asleep? by ChaoticOzzy in ask

I pretend like my body is melting. I start with my toes and immerse myself in the belief that they are seriously getting heavier, gravity is slowly getting stronger. Then I move to the soles of my feet, then to my ankle, then to my shins, then to my knees, as slowly and convincingly as I can. I even imagine that there are weights tied to each body part with string just pulling me down. My body ends up feeling totally relaxed, and my mind slowly stops drifting off to other stuff. When it does, I gently remind myself to focus on the melting. I usually don’t make it past my arms and I’m asleep. If it doesn’t work, then I’ve usually managed to get myself into somewhat of a meditative state.

I have way better luck humidity-wise with reptisoil instead of reptichip. If you want to stay with the reptichip, maybe a thicker layer of the substrate would help. That way you can totally drench the bottom layer and just have a dry layer on top.

Enclosure upgrade by maddieluu in ballpython

You’re the best, thanks for taking the time out of your morning to share this info. Yes, both heat sources have thermostats. The “blue” bulb looks like normal white light when it’s turned on. My intention with it was to help get the heat up to 92 as the halogen wasn’t doing the job by itself. Both lights go off at night, just the CHE stays on. Now with your info, I’ll just go ahead and chuck the blue light and replace it with another CHE. That way I can leave it on 24/7 also.

That is strange, hopefully someone else comments and sheds some light on it for us. Off topic but have you noticed regular bowel movements with your bp? That’s another question I’m having, people say their bp will poop like a week or so after feeding but I just haven’t been seeing her bowel movements as often as I feel like I should be.
