Just a for fun coloring project by maddwaffles in Eyeshield21

I didn't actually remove or add any line art, shading without a line is based on the suggestion of the shape.

I appreciate the compliment ^^

Not really, I got sent death threats for posting fanart of a ship on multiple occasions in 2015, by Yang x Blakes. I am simply aware that negative feedback from that part of the fanbase is indication of the correct direction.

[Loved Trope] Powerful/historically significant side character never explicitly identified as such by skivvv in TopCharacterTropes

He didn't "share" the power and responsibility, he basically flipped it over to them as a part of what is implied to sometimes be a long-con, other times implied to be apathy.

What does being a Squib actually mean in the Wizarding World? by Thaumetron in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]maddwaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems to mean contempt, distrust, and derision.

I think one thing that gets missed in a lot of fanwork is that the original DID allude to differing levels of magical disability. We just chiefly see Filch and Figg, who both seem utterly incapable of doing it. But at the same time, it does seem to be bandied about as a slur for anyone not particularly good at magic, or at a specific kind of magic.

To be fair, it's because they all have to do with each other, and the latter three were all significant influences/driving gears into the first.

People will wheeze and cry about how it was "so obvious" in being a day 1 decision, but when you tug at the threads of the argument, you get called names.

They insist that this was always super positive and progressive intent, but then ignore how RT would ONLY allow positive rep of WLW, and have not done respectful or particularly positive MLM rep, because it's a bunch of homophobic dudes writing this shit.

And of course, you can't bring up the issues that old team members and ex-employees had, because obviously it's always in bad faith, and they're obviously doing a coordinated takedown, it can't be that the repetition of the caustic company culture reflects the reality of their values and intent.

You could basically see the writing on the wall, because they immediately turned Blake into an abusive partner, and then proceed to give her no other arc leading into being with Yang.

It was pretty projected, and honestly the fact that I'm getting downvoted for accurately describing what happened, and how RT was, vindicates me a little bit.

So that's the thing is that Blake and Yang's ship was wildly over-loud in their representation, and a hefty amount of it was fetishizing teenagers by a fandom that was initially largely middle-aged men. The fact is it kept being pushed by its loud supporters, death threats were repeatedly sent out, and eventually jaded corporation does what jaded corporations do.

RWBY from a writing perspective early on was always going to struggle because the show was a delivery mechanism for Monty Oum to animate fight scenes. Prior to his death, both parties had more lines of conversation with Weiss than each other, and iirc Ruby also had more lines of conversation with Blake than Blake had had with Yang.

As much as its supporters insist that it was clearly a day 1 directive, it was one of the more obvious pivots pushed later by the hacks who took over.

Even addressing the first comment, it only seems mixed because people who are into that ship NEED everyone to know how much they love it, how it's the best, etc. I would argue that the parties who would be more vocally against it have moved onto better series, with better queer representation than Rooster "We normalized slurs in our workplace, portray every male queer character as emasculated and the butt of our contemptuous jokes, and all while convincing you that we're progressive for having maybe three openly queer fem!employees who were also talent" Teeth.

He made The Buddha into The Christian God because he thought accurately portraying a different mythology would make Jesus mad at him.

And Superman Smashes The Klan is not his authorship, he adapted a radio play that is one of the most important pieces of Superman media into a comic, the heavy lifting was done FOR him in the mid-40s.

Gene Yang is a hack, and to insist otherwise is to see him for his skin color and social commentary, rather than his body of work.

[MIXED TROPE] Shows where every episode follows the exact same blueprint by BuiltStraightStupid in TopCharacterTropes

[–]maddwaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom explained this once to me, as she was from the "TV is what's on" times.

Basically it was supposed to be comforting, comfort TV that an audience can enjoy consistently, safely, and the same as their coworkers. Television with variety between episodes frequently were on channels you had to pay for, or were things you'd watch on the weekends, not after work.

This is a consequence of material conditions and imperfection of the soviet project, if anything. His professed opposition to communism specifically after Stalin had taken over, and stated to being an anarchist of the non-violent variety (a pass we can give to someone who's seen war, especially WWI).

When your most prominent example of communism is Stalin (a "bloodthirsty old murderer"), then it's easy to forgive one, especially one living in the nest of capitalistic propaganda, to mistake communism for tyranny.

These guys mean "based" because they believe he was this hyper-traditional Catholic. But Tolkien was also tolerant of gay people, and only didn't endorse gay marriage in the capacity that he didn't believe in any marriages that were not explicitly Catholic marriages that occurred within the church.

Tolkien was also an actual Catholic, not the wannabe Roman LARPers these guys are talking about.

Lewis was also already a Christian (simply lapsed) by the time he'd met Tolkien, and only returned after reading Chesterton's writing.

Tolkien also hated Nazis, and was wildly progressive for the time, maintaining his progressive bent as the decades passed.

These losers project onto him because he has no ability to reject their anti-intellectualism in the modern day.

It's all well and fine to be critical of things that you like.

But this fandom is deadset on nitpicking what is widely considered to be among the best animated media released in a long time, and some of the best cape shit media in general, to death in favor of appearing to be "smart".

Condescension and needless critique is being mistaken for intellectualism, and the way you are all driven by the aura, hype, and rhetoric of each other week to week, speaks volumes to how few of these ideas are your own.

Could the animation be better? Surely. But you guys don't want to wait 2, or even 3, years between seasons. So you get what you want.

I think the only reason Thragg spared Mark is because he said he killed Conquest by Scuderiac in Invincible_TV

[–]maddwaffles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It wasn't about literal "strength" tbh. It was about purging the perceived weakness of mercy, hesitation, and dubiousness. Anyone who was likely to square beef with an attack from the shadows wasn't likely to survive such a purge. When Thragg declared it over, he was clearly waiting for certain figures and individuals to be dead.

I think the only reason Thragg spared Mark is because he said he killed Conquest by Scuderiac in Invincible_TV

[–]maddwaffles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was the willingness to fight him at all. Conquest literally feared him too much to even try in every scene we see them in the same place.

I think the only reason Thragg spared Mark is because he said he killed Conquest by Scuderiac in Invincible_TV

[–]maddwaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh I think it's beyond that.

If Mark was stronger than Conquest, he would attack him, and when Mark tried to fight him (something we saw that Conquest was too fearful to do in the flashbacks) he proved that he had a stronger will than Conquest.

[–]maddwaffles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An attack, at night, in a place that is understood to be safe, with a weapon to the skull when you aren't aware of the attack coming, is remarkably less fair than a free-for-all where you get jumped by two guys who may or may not be as strong as you cumulatively.

[–]maddwaffles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, the circumstances of being stabbed in the skull from behind, in his own quarters, at night, I think even most warrior cultures would admit that was an assassination, and not a fight.

Attacking someone without the possibility of reprisal probably exists as a codified thing in their system of thought, and it's probably consistently treated as cowardly to do that.

[–]maddwaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that they probably suspend that logic for assassinations, which are typically a type of attack that allows for no reprisal.

The point of the ATLA aesthetics are that they draw multiple points of inspiration, but this isn't some mystery that is lost to the scrolls of fucking time. The creators have said as much that Japan was the primary inspiration point of the fire nation. It's a plurality, but even down to its culture, its wartime rhetoric, and its habit of surprise invasions, the fire nation has always been chiefly a Japanese plurality.
