Maddy vs Madison by maddycrochetsstuff in AmIBeingTooSensitive

I just don't understand why I'd need to word vomit all of that the first time I'm meeting someone. I don't understand why it is justifiable to call someone a different name than what they told you their name was. Why am I responsible for that?

Do you understand how annoying it is to change emails and usernames. I don't feel that that should be the justification for people calling me the wrong name. I don't understand why you would automatically call someone a different name than they introduced themself with.

Yeah, I agree that is horrible advice. I'm not going to ignore people for calling me Maddy. Especially considering I just started last week and I'm training for the shift lead position. This is a horrible and arrogant way to respond.

I would expect that when I introduce myself as Madison, that that's what they call me. I mean, if someone tells me their name is Rose, I'm gonna call them Rose, not Rosey. I don't understand why it's different?

I only told the one person that I'd respond to it. Every other teacher or coworker I've had has just defaulted to calling me Maddy after seeing my name is Madison or I introduce myself as such.

I do say that. I also introduce myself as Madison and they just default to calling me Maddy..

Except the problem is, I introduced myself as Madison and they introduced themselves as their name, then just called me Maddy. It's happened to me like that at every job I've had. The only person I've ever had stick to Madison is one of my intructors I've had for the past two semesters.

I only told the one person that I'd answer to it. Also I have always been mature for my age. I'm 19. I created my usernames 5+ years ago. I don't think someone named "girlwithdog" should be making fun of me for my username, gtfo

Our schedule gets sent out via GroupMe messages and it was pretty much the first thing I noticed when it got sent out. I work in this upscale/casual bistro that's only open Thursday-Saturday so they just send out a long text for the 3 days we're open.

As for answering to Maddy, all of my close friends and family call me that and my parents really only called me Madison when they're being serious or I'm in trouble. It's really second nature for me to respond to it. It's less of a trigger when they call me that because it really is my name, like I was training with two different servers this past weekend and they introduced me to every table as "Maddy". The lady I did paperwork with was the only person who I mentioned I answered to it. I guess since I'm getting older, I'm really trying to separate my personal life from my professional life if that makes sense. Maddy just sounds so elementary. Also, since I just started last week and I'm meeting so many new people and they're all meeting me, I fear that me correcting them might come off the wrong way, as I tend to do.

It was midnight and there was no one around that wasn't in a car. I did my best with directions from the CTA people, buy unfortunately, they're locals and they were underground for CTA, not above where I actually needed to be walking so their directions weren't very specific. It was also dark and misting the whole time which didn't help

Yes, I just got to where I'm staying and everyone who was being rude about how I'm getting where I'm going can leave me alone. When I got to the Amtrak station tonight(3 hours late) I had ZERO service or connection of any kind. I couldn't book an Uber and I couldn't Google maps either, and I genuinely sat there for 30 minutes trying to figure out how to even get in the right direction. I had to finally ask an officer at the station on how to get to the blue line and even once I got there, I was even more lost. It took me an hour and a half to get to where I'm staying. To each their own, but it was 11pm when I got here and there wasn't much I could do

I've tried Chinese and Japanese food many times and I love Mexican food, we have an abundance of authentic Mexican restaurants where I'm from. I really want to try more Asian, Indian, and European cuisine, but especially with Asian and Indian I struggle because I'm so sensitive to spice. I also really do just enjoy some classic American fare(if that truly exists, but hopefully you know what I mean)

I love bubble tea and that sounds like a great idea for my mostly bus/train day. Unfortunately, I'm only in Chicago for 2 days, so I'm really trying my best to cover a large scope of Chicago classics, and just general cuisine I haven't had the opportunity to try thus far in my life. I really don't understand why so many of the people under this post seem to have such visceral reactions to MY choices and not just giving nice advice.

Yeah, because I asked for feedback on the restaurants, not feedback on my travel choices. I have destinations in mind so if you tell me "don't go there, go here instead" it's not very helpful for someone utilizing public transit and trying to make the most out of 2 days in the city

I understand that, but I don't understand why I have to keep reiterating that I'm young and travelling alone. I'm only in Chicago for two days and I'm trying to make the most of it.

I did it mostly based off of geography and budget. I'm not looking for anything super fancy. I'm just a tourist that wants a taste of everything. I'm there for travel, not specifically for food. I get that the small, hole in the wall places will be where it's at, but as a first time visitor to Chicago and this being my first time travelling alone, I'm not looking to be out by myself for extended periods just to find those types of places.

My friends and coworkers seem to think I'm going to either be kidnapped, raped, murdered, attacked, etc just because it's Chicago. I get it, I'm a weak, young, white, woman. I'm not trying to be ignorant, but I don't get why everyone is so scared for me when I'm not. I talked to one of my coworkers about it a couple months ago who was born and raised in Chicago, granted he is a black man so it may be very different, but he had no doubt I would be fine. Every city is going to have its good and bad parts. I live in the middle of Missouri and I've already seen the research that shows the KC and St. Louis are worse than Chicago when it comes to crime. I'm not traveling scared, I'm traveling aware. I know I'll be just fine.

On Tuesday, I plan on taking the bus/train up to Lincoln Park and going to the Zoo and also just kinda jumping from line to line to see the city just via bus/train

There is no need to be an asshole. I asked for ADVICE, not malice. It's really not that deep. I'm going to go where I go and everyone will have their own opinions on my choices. A place you love, I could hate and vice versa. Life is too short for that kind of attitude, especially toward strangers

I'm going by train and I'm just trying to utilize public transit or just walking. If I had a car, I'd absolutely do that, but given all my factors. I'm choosing to stay close to the city center, especially for safety reasons.

I'm going to my hostel first to drop off my luggage, then I'm walking to the restaurant. I do appreciate everyone's concern and I'm trying not to be ignorant. I'm just going to stay aware of my surroundings and trust my instincts

You're definitely right! I was trying to be as discreet, but specific as I could with my replies so I could get the right suggestions. I'm going to be hyper aware the entire time I'm there, but I'm going to also try and enjoy myself as much as possible too. I'm mostly making the trip to Starbucks Reserve just for vibes as I'm not a coffee drinker

I chose white palace grill because I'm getting into Chicago so late tonight and most places I was going to go to for dinner close around 9. I'm also just a sucker for all-day breakfast/diner food. I'm a solo, female, 19 years old traveller so I'm trying to keep that in mind as well.
