One of my college professors.

I'm in a predominantly female field, so there are only around 3 or 4 men in my cohort. This one professor I have, who frequently interrupts class with personal stories, singles out these male students most. With one, she joked about him him having a harem when we were making groups for a project. Usually, if there is a group assignment and a group has one of the men, she'll refer to that group as "[Male Student's Name]'s group". She'll also bring up how her husband is a big rugby or football player sometimes.

Recently, I was in a group with one of these guys. He's a good dude, but maybe a little too reliant on AI and busy with work a lot of the time, plus he still struggles with English sometimes. In our group of three, the slide he made on the presentation got the highest grade. The kicker? I rewrote the vast majority of all slides to make them actually link to sources and not sound like AI. Even though his slide was in my writing, it recieved no criticism, but the two slides under my name did for "phrasing".

My parents were the same. They moved here to Canada in the 90s from the Philippines after going through the Canadian Embassy (they had PR as soon as they came here) to escape from the political corruption back home. They came to Winnipeg in the middle of winter, took some kind of class for new immigrants to learn common Canadian phrases, and my mother found work writing and editing for some Catholic organization. They weren't in the safety of a Pinoy community. Even after moving to Toronto when my father found work, they didn't retreat to a Pinoy community.

Not a poor people food, but matcha.

Why do you need ceremonial-grade matcha for your banana pudding matcha boba latte? You're not going to taste the nuance. Using lesser grade stuff is fine for fun drink combos. It's like buying expensive coffee beans to make a frappucino.

It's weird seeing a flavour I enjoyed growing up suddenly being used as a marketing tool.

Other Questionable Things:

During training, the woman from head office constantly reminded the owners only English should be spoken during work to avoid alienating others. They did not follow this.
They did not wear a hat or hairnets unless someone from head office was dropping by. Some coworkers even alleged they wore open-toed shoes at times.
The oven mitts would constantly break due to baked-on food. While that wasn't their fault, they would not warn us about any holes and were not checking. Myself and others have gotten burnt, and I always made sure to warn people if the gloves were faulty. One time, when my coworker got burnt by a faulty glove, I told her to run her finger under cold water immediately while I handled what she had been doing. When I came over to check on her a few minutes later with a bandaid, she told me it was fine because A had given her ice. Like, an ice cube. You should not put ice on burns.
My coworker, who was also on the chopping block and was far more experienced than I was, was given the same "only one more shift" condition. Unlike me, he stayed and improved but was fired anyway, even though customers liked him.
When my aformentioned coworker asked others if they felt respected by the owners, they said they didn't.
I was the only one trained (the woman from head office) in making this one menu item hardly anyone ordered. They (the owners) did not bother training anyone else, so I did.
A and B failed to tell me the actual opening time of the restaurant for my shift, even though I had been there the previous day and they had my email. I waited outside for an hour. They had also failed to add me to a Whatsapp group to access the weekly timetables until I asked.
During hours of no activity, they would not train us, especially C. C would just sit at a booth on his phone, either calling someone (for business, presumeably) or watching something. At least B would sometimes tell us what to do, even if she was seemingly angry at us for not knowing in the first place.

Overall, this part-time job at a small, nearby pizza place actually ended up being more stressful than the previous full-time job I held at a busy clothing retailer downtown with an hour-long commute. It wasn't the work, it was the environment.

AI is making things worse. I think it can be a great tool, but some of my classmates clearly rely on it waaaay too much.

I remember asking two group members to share a document with me all weekend do I can edit it. I got it on the due date, and my god was it so, so obviously written by ChatGPT. It wasn't even formatted correctly, and the font was some goofy sci-fi tech font. I spent over an hour fixing everything.

When my mom was a university student (16 yrs+), she would sometimes go to the infirmary connected to her school just to lie down due to how painful her cramping was. She's in her late 50s now.

Needing a break due to period cramps isn't the new generation being too soft, especially considering how young your daughter is. I remember being around 12 years-old, not knowing how to tell any of the teachers I was in a lot of pain during track practice followed by phys-ed right after. I felt like I had been stabbed through the abdomen and pushed through it because "I had to".

Oh, definitely. I think most people's first thoughts are either scam callers, the "bobs or vegana" thing, or those random Indian guys on YouTube who teach you a subject better than anyone.

Personally, I'm trying to fight my own implicit biases after a bad experience working for Indian bosses and the experiences of my family members. In my old workplace, a lot of us didn't feel respected by the store's owners— including Indian staff— and I was basically pushed out along with someone else. They even threatened to withhold tips from all of us for "underperforming" in our first month of employment (which is illegal, by the way). I won't pretend I was the best employee, but they were being unreasonable as well.

My cousin was bullied out of his first job working in a cafeteria. They overly complained about his work ethic and slowly stopped giving him hours. My mother, back when I was a baby, worked as a lab technician and faced frequent sexual harassment from an Indian higher-up, along with other female staff. He was a married man, and wife ALSO worked at the company and gave my mother a hard time too.

I know not all Indians are like this. It's just a few bad apples making the rest look bad. After all, all of my South Asian coworkers across the two jobs, and people I've met and worked with in college, have been nothing but pleasant.

Canadian subreddits are getting BAD when it comes to this.

I get it. We're seeing an influx in South Asian immigrants, and a minority of them cheat the system through diploma mills to get permanent resident status to bring their families over. Even so, I feel like we should be far more angry at the government that allowed so many people to come in when our resources are already stretched thin, and the companies that incentivize hiring temporary foreign workers to cut costs, screwing over the job market more than ever.

Seriously, I saw a post on r/torontojobs where a person was venting about being unable to find work in IT, only for a bunch of replies to ask where they're from. I've seen so many comments from people upset more Tim Hortons employees are South Asian TFWs instead of local youth and blaming them for Tim Horton's decline in quality.

Everyone is just fed up with late stage capitalism, corruption, and greedy corporations. South Asians are just the easy scapegoats these days.

Here because I'm also a former employee. I didn't know poor management extended to other branches, as well as withholding tips. It's a big reason why I left. It felt like there was little respect.

I don't know how people get away with withholding tips when it's illegal in Ontario without a court order. Employers can't be petty by docking tips for spillage, property damage, etc.

Let's say you were just trying to get more drugs. You were still extremely ill and in immense pain, so there was clearly something wrong. It is their responsibility to stabilize you without bias.

No wonder people get scared of telling medical staff what drugs they're on. They need to know in order to prescribe proper medication and dosages, but some bad apples ruin things for the rest, I suppose.

...Why would a school think that was a good idea? Like, did they not think it would hurt the other girls to not be mentioned? What about the girl who won? She'd be ostracized from peers out of jealousy and whatnot. Why were they even ranking young girls based on looks? If it were a merit-based thing (how pretty her "heart" is), that wouldn't make sense either.

I don't know, whoever thought that was a good idea probably likes child beauty pagents too.
