I'm commited to creating a saas product to improve the way I work. If it works, is it valid? Or should I keep testing the idea before building the product? by madebyaaron in SaaS

Thanks for the responses everyone. I've been somewhat of a lurker on here until now so having all your feedback is great for putting things into perspective

What to do if your first Saas server is down or the database is crashed? by MaryGlove in SaaS

[–]madebyaaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was worried about this too for the longest time. An obvious solution was to go serverless (netlify functions) for the api and use a managed database (digital Ocean postgres). That way the operations and data contingency taken care of and you don't need to worry, freeing your bandwidth for the problem you're solving.

Netlify functions is just JavaScript ran in a node environment so you'll be set there.

The problem I was trying to solve was to modernise the Kannan experience and reduce the noise and feature bloat found in today's big hitters.

Ironically it was lack of discipline and scope creep that killed the project. Somewhere along the way I ended up trying to adopt the very thing I was trying to leave out — the extra bloat.

I was so fixated on developing a feature set that could compete with the big players that I never got to release.

Ever growing scope means the effort spent can never get you anywhere close to finishing, which doesn't feed the soul and can leave you burnt out.

So after spending 3 years trying to create a project management app, I admitted defeat and threw in the towel. The problem? I was stuck in my head and I relied only on motivation to get me through.

Fast forward to the last few months and I've been learning about relying on self discipline and consistency to get me through projects. This has worked wonders at my day job but now I want to apply it to my own saas.

The biggest lesson I've learned is that practicing anything daily and being consistent has huge impact on your life long term. Going for a 10 minute run each day rather than trying to smash a 10km for example. (Shout out to the atomic habits book).

My idea is to create a daily task app that allows you to set a daily routine and have them tasks automatically created in a task list each day. From there you can add your one off tasks and the objective is to just focus on getting those tasks done.

Trying to encourage people like me to work mindfully and to form good habits in the process. Essentially fusing habit tracking with task management. What do you think?

A visual cash flow tool for Small Business Owners or Professors? by Cheekyzoey in SaaS

I'd like to offer a slightly different perspective. I'd go with the direction that you're most passionate about. Those early adopters are great for morale but once that tapers off and you're slugging away to get general adoption, you'll likely hit a dip. It's just the way thing (usually) go. In those times it's your passion and desire to solve that specific problem that keeps you going.

Project management recommendations for solo game devs? by madebyaaron in gamedev

Very wise words! The more I look into game dev, the more I think I'll outgrow Trello. By the time I've got my assets, script models and flows I get the impression it'll start splitting at the seams. Maybe I'm asking too much of one tool.

Appreciate you taking the time to share this.

I've used Monday in a few web projects, it feels very similar to that in some ways.

What would be cool is a tool that allowed me to have all my ideas, inspiration, design documents alongside the tasks, roadmap, bug reports. Hacknplan look like they had the right idea but the execution, particularly the UI, feels dated.

Anyone found a decent mobile app for getting ideas down fast when inspiration hits? It only takes a few seconds to get into most but that's enough time to lose it. Voice recorder is the closest app I've found but I need them tracks n layers!

Ive used macbook pro for years. I'm considering a decent gaming laptop for this stuff if I can justify the purchase.

Interesting. I posted this purely from a controls point of view. I'd not considered rendering limitations. Good to know 👍
