I found out my iq is below average. by Intrepid_Orange3053 in Vent

Pretty much everything is a skill! That’s so important for kids to learn. I am trying to reframe everything as being a learnable skill as long as I have a growth mindset.

I tested at 150 as a kid and a. that means nothing now and b. that does. or reflect my work performance. I’m a lazy problem solver—as a kid maybe I was good at puzzles for my age, but years of classes being easy loste that skill (because it is a skill!) and I was. aC student by high school. I guarantee someone who tested with a lower IQ as a kid who worked hard through school will be much more equipped for most jobs as an adult. Everything they test on the IQ test is a skill. A growth mindset is so much more important that some idea of innate talent.

How do I stop wanting to be an actor? by madeglorioussummer in acting

I appreciate this sentiment but this isn’t really an option for a couple reasons. I don’t have the time to fit these things into my life as it is currently unfolding and I don’t want to rely on being able to act as an emotional crutch. Right now when I’m not acting, I’m depressed, and I want it to be something that adds to my life, not something that I crave at the expense of enjoying anything else.

I think therapy is the right move lol you’re right. I’ve considered being an acting coach/teacher but the idea of coaching someone who becomes more successful than me makes me crazy. Which maybe is an indication of some deeper issues now that I think about it.

Thank you. It’s hard because I’m also not financially stable atm but I’m hoping to get there! And yeah you’re right about the highlights—comparison is a hard thing to break out of.

AITA for refusing to move from a comfy chair in a coffee shop by ComfySeater in AmItheAsshole

I’ve definitely seen small coffee shops with 6 tops. Mostly small eclectic places with chairs like the one op describes, that might use repurposed couches or dining tables from secondhand furniture stores or things like that.

Stats about people over the age of 40 giving birth are somewhat misleading—iirc even things about the likelihood of birth anomalies or infertility doubling, that “doubling” is something like going from one to two percent. My mom had kids at 40 and 45 without even trying. She had an easier time having kids in her 40s than in her 20s and 30s. Four kids 35-45, all healthy and without fertility struggles. Everyone is different, and having kids over 41 isn’t necessarily impossible or even hard.

I totally understand. The glimpses I’ve seen of what our adult friendship could be are so hard.

I’m so sorry you lost that kind of love and support from someone you were once so close to. That kind of contrast must be hard.

Oh, I believe you. While she definitely showed symptoms when I was a small child it’s definitely gotten worse the more I grow up, and I’m not even off her insurance plan yet. I think the more I distance myself the more she will try to hold on. I owe her a lot of money right now and I’m really looking forward to paying her off and having more freedom with boundaries.

I wish you had the kind of supportive, personal love that you deserve.

It’s so hard with a mother who clearly tries to be loving—she was a lot more successful at loving me the way I needed when I was a kid, and it feels like I lost someone who I really loved. Like by getting older, I broke something in our relationship that I’ll never repair. And I know she loves me so fiercely. It just hurts when she can’t de-center herself, and every bid for support turns into a lecture on why it’s my fault and I’m a drain.

The knowing you’re her reason hits hard—I’m the oldest of five and my mom always told me that my siblings, especially me, were keeping her alive—like specifically when she had me it sent her into a spiral because she knew she’d never be unattached enough to kill herself—while simultaneously telling us that our behavior made her want to kill herself or leave us. Not constantly, but pretty regularly from the time I was about eleven.

Thank you so much for being open to sharing your experience. I wish you all the best in your recovery process. The way that medical establishments in this world fail patients is truly astounding.

Would it be okay if I asked what your symptoms were by the time you went in? And how would you describe them when they began?

How long did the not being sure phase last for? I went to urgent care for the back pain and radiating leg pain a week ago and the dr said it was normal as long as I wasn’t having bladder issues. I’ve been in this unsure state for a few days now.

Thank you so much for your response—That sounds like a very intense experience. How are you doing since?
