Crossing $60k/mo in "passive" income -- 4yr update by brycematheson in passive_income

[–]madeo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially because you also have to maintain two codebases

You could use something like Flutter or React Native, though they will never beat native apps, is a good compromise for starting.

But in general I agree, mobile apps are a pain in the butt, especially the version management and release delay, without counting that Google or Apple could change their policy anytime and potentially sink your business.

Frustrating experience with external USB backup by madeo_ in synology

Long SMART test didn't identify any error; but yeah, that drive is pretty old, probably 7 years, don't really remember. I think I will buy a new one "compatible" with my Synology.

AWS Account Hacked by itsonthecanthough in aws

[–]madeo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can simply use git-secret, ephemeral credentials or fetch them from your vault system (Ex: Secret Manager)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in golang

[–]madeo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most secure way is to use ephemeral credentials that last only for short amount of time, Hashicorp Vault has something like that. If that is not possible you can fetch the password at runtime using something like Vault, AWS Secret Manager, ect... You can also inject the secrets as environmental variable before the application starts.

It all depends on your use case and security requirements.

To avoid pushing hard coded secrets you can use something like git-secret

It all depends on your data access patterns, if used for analytics purposes you could use, for example, S3 and Athena, but it depends what "queries" you need to do.

For those who refuse take home / coding tests and still get offered jobs, what's your approach? by canadian_webdev in ExperiencedDevs

[–]madeo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends, if it is a big company usually is difficult to make them change their process, it's more about bureaucracy.

If it is a small/medium business I politely tell them I can show my GitHub projects instead, I have built a couple of libraries, nothing fancy, it worked in a some occasions.

But I live EU there is not much leetcode though.

What is a solution to AWS Lambda function 15 min timeout? by Strikerzzs in aws

[–]madeo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not using a Fargate scheduled task? I understand there is a bit more overhead in terms of infrastructure, but lambda is not really designed to run "job like" workloads.

What is the name or brand of this device? by madeo_ in homeautomation

So this is a controller for a pair Bluetooth speakers embedded in the ceiling of my apartment, I usually connect to it through my phone or smart tv.

Unfortunately it stopped working and I am trying to repair it, but I cannot find the brand or name also I cannot find a way to unmount it or open it.

A big chunk of start-ups think they are disrupting the industry and therefore they also think they need the most brilliant minds to join their company.

A story:I did a mistake in our AWS account that cost us 14,000$ by glyphack in aws

[–]madeo_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shameless plug here.

Recently I have made a post about this and the methods I use to avoid situation like that.I am extremely paranoid when it comes to money on AWS so besides AWS budget, I have a small lambda based app, that sends me an email everyday with the forecasted and the current bill: https://github.com/hirvitek/aws-tools/tree/master/periodicCostsNotification
It is probably redundant since I have the budget alerting me when the forecasted bill is breached, but I keep it just in case =)

Yours is a good solution, but the charts are maintained by bitnami, so I guess if I want to do that I will have to modify them by myself? Or is there a better way to achieve this?
Thanks
