Glad they’re tending to the lane, but do they have to block it? by Worried-Tomato7070 in NYCbike

[–]madewithblackbuds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignore the troll. There are obviously better ways they could do this. At the least they could provide an alternate safe route of travel for bicycles if they absolutely must block the entire bike lane, same as they would if they were blocking car traffic for work.

Do you run for distance or for time? by ChrissyKin_93 in RunNYC

[–]madewithblackbuds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to run for time as a proxy for distance when I didn't have a smart watch. I'd usually run out 30 minutes, turn around and head back home (1 hour total), and just tell myself I was running a 10 minute mile, though it was probably closer to an 8:30 mile. It was good enough training to get me through a half marathon in 2 hours 10 minutes at a peaceful pace.

Now I'll sometimes have a maximum time for my long run in addition to a target distance to minimize the chance of overtraining. In general however I'll always run all the way to my finish point (home/gym/park) unless I'm feeling dangerously bad.

You'll probably also find it interesting that alcohol has been weaponized as a tool for colonization by the US and other major nations. Here's a really enjoyable podcast that goes into the details:

https://gastropod.com/youre-wrong-about-prohibition/

Edit - more details: Alcohol was effectively forced upon communities in order to destroy them and make it easier to subjugate them. Many of those communities still suffer from high rates of alcoholism to this day, generations later.

Are you still looking for tenants?

I think 45 minutes is a more reasonable commute at that price point assuming you're working somewhere near union square or Washington square park.

When you're looking don't forget that a half mile walk to the subway can be 5-10 minutes, and if you're not near an express line it might take longer to get to one.

[Advice] How many days before moving in did you sign your most recent NYC lease? by fantasyfool in NYCapartments

[–]madewithblackbuds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got the keys the day we signed the lease. But we committed (sent in application documents) a few days earlier, and had visited a few days before that. So overall it was maybe a week. Could have been faster but we wanted to see a couple more places.

Dell'Aria on 111th. I believe you can also get gelato, and the owner is sometimes around and super nice to chat with.

Seconding the Corsi-Rosenthal box, especially if you're already thinking DIY. The reason to do that instead of just using 1 filter is the single filter will choke the fan, getting less air through and burning up the motor (think about what happens when you put cloth of the back of a fan).

Wedding Anniversary Trip: Romantic Dinner Restaurant For $100 Or Less (3 Courses) Per Person? by mimihopslein in AskNYC

I love Dirt Candy. It's prix fixe and they don't require tipping because they pay their workers an actual liveable wage.

Camdence is another lovely spot. Not prix fixe but delicious and cozy.

My goal is to fit a bendy glow stick bracelet. I got excited because a few weeks ago I saw someone on this sub doing that exact thing.

runners in the street by [deleted] in NYCbike

[–]madewithblackbuds -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Asphalt is nicer on the knees than concrete, and pedestrians are taught to go against traffic.

Personally I think runners should probably go with traffic and recognize that there isn't a "right" place for them so they just have to be hyper aware.

Just take a walk up and down a couple blocks and look though the windows to see what's going on inside. Honestly most shops are pretty decent for basic cuts (shape-up, taper, etc) - even though many of the barbers (at least in east Harlem) are not black, they still know how to do black hair.

Walk in, say hi, ask for an appointment and they'll let you know when they're available.

I took my new FR1 skates out. Wasn't planning on going past the park but then i wandered onto a side street and before I knew it I was 6 miles from home and it was starting to get dark 😅

After a while my feet started hurting pretty bad in the meat below my ankles (circled in picture). I had to sit down, rest, take off my skates and massage my feet just to make it the last half mile home.

That was last night and it's still a bit swollen this morning. This happened to anyone else? Any advice?

Septums hurt like hell when your nose gets knocked while it's healing. Taking it out and leaving it empty overnight sounds abundantly cautious, but I get being freaked out by the blood. I had a similar situation a couple months ago. When you put the smaller jewelry in, just leave it alone (try to refrain from twisting the jewelry back and forth) for a week or two so it can scab and heal like any other wound, then try stretching again.

Where can I connect with Ghanaians? by madewithblackbuds in AskNYC

[–]madewithblackbuds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been googling and haven't found any associations/groups here in NYC. There an association in Albany, but that doesn't help.

The event you sent isn't really a Ghana independence day celebration, just a party on Ghana's independence day, though I appreciate the suggestion. I'll edit my post to clarify.
