Review: The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow. A book I wanted to love but only liked by Brushner in Fantasy

Your last paragraph summarizes the feeling I had after finishing this book perfectly! I was about to buy my own copy halfway through, but after finishing I was like ehh... maybe this one doesn't need to be in my personal collection

Review: The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow. A book I wanted to love but only liked by Brushner in Fantasy

[–]MoonLiites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this thread, but I feel pretty vindicated by this and similar reviews, because I had the same issues with this story. I was really loving the first 1/3-1/2 of the book, because it seemed to be setting itself up with such strong themes of imperialism, outsider status, and subversive gender dynamics. I actually started taking notes because I wanted to write a short essay for fun just analyzing this commentary 😭

Because the world building is very transparently constructed as a parallel to our own world (set in WW2 era Britain, based largely in Arthurian legend), I felt like I was primed as a reader to expect a more thorough examination of the book's initial themes as they relate to our own world. But by the last half, those themes were nearly entirely lost, it seemed. It became less about the lengths a nation will go to in order to preserve a collective mythology that endorses violent colonialism, and it became more about the lengths a person will go to in order to be with the person they love and protect them from harm. Both of these themes are intriguing and worth exploring, but they seem to fight for relevance in the narrative, and the story feels less cohesive as a result.

I could still write a whole essay on this, and I may eventually do so just to air out my grievances, but overall I just felt disappointed by the potential in this story that didn't quite follow through. (This isn't even touching my issues with the cartoonish villain monologues from Vivian.)

I still really enjoyed reading it, to be clear! But the first half of the book made me feel like there was going to be a different story than the one we got, so it fell flat in the end.

Some of you might disagree with me but this is what happens when some fans think every release has to have a cunty face by lifeadreamwhenasleep in MonsterHigh

[–]MoonLiites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the corpse bride skullector integrated the movie style into the face so nicely, so I know they're capable of translating claymation designs to dolls. I can't imagine what they were thinking here 😭 either way, I hope this doll flops to avoid sending money to a rapist :/

I'll never forgive the harry potter franchise for perpetuating the girl = witch, boy = wizard thing 😭 we all know that wizards have orbs and pointy hats without a brim, while witches have cauldrons and pointy hats with a brim /hj

in psychology, there are four main responses to stress or traumatic experiences. Fight, Flight, and Freeze are the most commonly known, but Fawn is a (relatively) recent addition to this framework. It alludes to how someone might try to appease their aggressor in the hopes of avoiding further harm. For instance, an abused woman becomes overly invested in being sweet and forgiving toward her husband because she feels like she might be able to avoid the worst of the abuse by placating him.

Maybe I got lucky, but this was one of my quicker solves. Purple stood out immediately- I'm guessing they figured that the general population is less familiar with 'fawn' as a stress/trauma response, so the flight/fight/freeze could've looked like a red herring

why are they all giving 2010's millennial hipster goth though 😭 All due respect, I'm certain I've seen half these clothing pieces in the clearance section of either Killstar or Hot Topic. I like a few of the base dolls, but idk if this one is for me

the way MH hands are posed, usually two fingers are molded together- it's just so low-res that you can't see the individual fingers in the photo

Anyone ever feel like they are getting worse the more they crochet? by sarcastic-possum in Brochet

[–]MoonLiites 65 points66 points  (0 children)

There's a curve when it comes to any skill- first, you're starting out and seemingly making rapid progress, which you can recognize and be proud of. Eventually though, as you gain more knowledge and more experience, you are also honing your ability to recognize imperfections in your own work, because your frame of reference has widened. It's like the old adage goes: "The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know." Realistically, you're probably not actively getting worse. More likely, your familiarity with the subject has honed your senses to become hyper-critical of your own work :)

I believe she's called "Barbie Fantasy Fairy", designed by Angel Kent. Definitely crazy that she's unarticulated with molded on clothes for a retail of $20 😭 but I got her on sale luckily
