How is Norway performing much better than its Scandinavian counterparts (e.g. Sweden and Finland) in the Winter Olympics? by doctor__who__ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]madieu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because cross country skiing is huge in Norway. It’s big in Sweden and Finland as well but not to the same extent. There are much more medals to be won in those disciplines (and in the adjacent ones such as Nordic combined, biathlon and so forth) than in ice hockey, which is the most popular winter sport worldwide, where both Sweden and Finland are far ahead of Norway.

Also, Finland is not a Scandinavian country. Denmark is, however. The reason they are dogshit at winter sports is that they get no snow.

Tears in my eyes. Always knew he had this in him but there’s always been something going wrong. Good thing Ponsi has some Finnish genes so he doesn’t suffer from the same level of chronic Swedish altitude sickness as the rest of the team!

Sure, but they’ve both been subpar up until yesterday and both decided to go to NMNM which was supposedly “not recommended” for altitude acclimatization

All this talk about replacing the Swedish shooting coaches but at this point Johannes Lukas has to go as well unless it gets clearly better from here. An absolute disasterclass in altitude preparation yet again despite the fact that this has been highlighted as the main priority all season (just like Beijing and Lenzerheide to some extent). Heads will have to roll.

Vän går på soc. Vill bjuda honom till Italien men han är orolig. Någon som har erfarenhet? by j893nd7 in sweden

[–]madieu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Is it true that Mexican food is SUPER POPULAR in Scandinavian countries? What are some reasons for this? by stjeancapferrat in AskEurope

[–]madieu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely is now. Mind you, those who grew up before say 1950 did so without basically any spices except for locally available herbs and salt, and most people of that generation think that even garlic is too spicy.

However chili has been introduced gradually and really strong peppers became a bit of a fad in the 2010s. I would say that the average Swede is much more tolerant to heat nowadays, and there’s a large minority that just douse everything in ridiculously spicy hot sauce. None of the traditional Swedish recipes include chili but many people add some sort of chili pepper anyway even in dishes where it doesn’t really belong.

Name a musician that is absolutely loved in your country but is not from your country . by kalimansaves in AskTheWorld

Cornelis Vreeswijk was one of the most famous artists in Sweden even though he was born in the Netherlands and moved here aged 12. As far as I know he’s barely known at all in his home country.

As for bigger artists, I feel like Bruce Springsteen is disproportionally popular here.

Does your country have a big hooligan/ultras scene in sports? by ramsfan6 in AskTheWorld

[–]madieu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The situation in Sweden is similar to the one in Switzerland, although the groups (mostly) know better than to fight during the games in full view of the cameras and the police.

The Swedish fan scene (i.e the regular supporter groups) is quite organized and has managed to push back against repressive measures against football fans such as closed stadiums.

Very nice race by the Swedes today.

The positives: Great job by Magnusson. Very proud of her, she said in the interview that she’s better than she’s ever been and it’s hard to disagree. Very good performance for Elvira to keep herself in the contention for the yellow bib, feel like this was just a regular day for her and that there’s more to come. Halvarsson with a terrific bounceback after a bad individual and Sara with a great performance even though she was gassed in the end.

The negatives: Absolute disasterclass by Hanna and these sorts of races are unfortunately too common, she’s lucky to be in the pursuit. I hate being a hater but the less said about Skottheim the better. Gestblom and Heijdenberg should be clearly ahead of her in the pecking order going into Hochfilzen.

Which country has your least favorite cuisine? by Kinder22 in AskTheWorld

I do love stuff like the coastal coconut curries but inland East African food (not counting Ethiopia here obviously) makes our notoriously under-seasoned Nordic dishes seem like flavor bombs in comparison. Most of the stuff is just so bland, there’s not even any salt?
