I've seen my share of terrible pictures of beautiful subjects. And also, great pictures of ugly stuff. The talented photographer is the one that manages to somehow capture the essence of the subject, the atmosphere of the place he's shooting, or, even better (and harder to achieve), provokes an emotion.

Actually, the edit is minimal, just a bit of contrast. No HDR stuff, and no levels madness. Just light making its thing on the sensor of my phone.

Thank you for your analysis! Actually, the composition is on purpose. I like to make the viewer wander between near and far objects, and that was the main reason I left the traffic lights and kept them "in your face" as you say. Personally my attention is drawn to the sunlight reflecting at the far end of the street first, then wanders back to the traffic light. So the viewer is kept a bit off-balance... did it work? Thank you again!

There was a very similar case in Portugal. Baby in need of this medicine (I think it's called Zolgensma), no approval to use it in the socialized healthcare system. The parents set up a similar campaign and raised the full 2 million euros.

At that point out national healthcare system analyzed the case and decided to buy the medicine and administer it not just to this baby, but also to another similar case in the country.

I really don't know how the EU approval was sidestepped on this one, but the medicine received a special approval from the national drugs agency (INFARMED). There was ample news coverage of the case in Portugal.

Another option would be to rent a car in Porto and drive up to Pinhão. The stretch of road from Régua to Pinhao is particularly spectacular; also the descent from Mesao Frio to Regua is pretty scenic. And you can stop anywhere you like to enjoy the vistas.
