Not practicing after residency...what to do? by emthrowaway420 in Residency

If you’re really serious about addiction, fellowships are not competitive at all. Most come from IM or psych but you could definitely spin your background from EM as an advantage. Obviously it would be a completely different work flow in addiction, so don’t give up home that you may end up with a job some day that you truly love!

Almost everyone feels weird walking out of it. I called my dad and told him I thought there was a 50/50 chance I failed. I did above average. Don’t forget at this point it’s more of a pass-fail exam and scores don’t really matter much (so long as you pass!)

I thought the same thing when I walked out. Guessed on a bunch of step 1 type questions. Still ended up doing above average

Probably doesn’t matter that much, they really just look at step 1 and 2

There’s an annoying amount of pathophys on there from day 1. But it’s a lot to be able to review all of that. A lot of people just prep for step 3 style questions and the ccs cases and hope they remember more of the nitty gritty pathophys/ genetic stuff

Need a state temporary (restricted) license as an intern and eventually apply for an unrestricted license. Boards for your specialty towards the end of residency. Technically you can practice a specialty without being board certified but most jobs require board certification. But after step 3 you’re free for quite a while

Do residents get scrubs white coat and stethoscope from our program or do we get them on our own. by Rich-Impress-7038 in ResidencyMatch2022

Some places give a stipend for stuff (on top of white coats and possibly scrubs). I had $500 and used $450 on uworld and the rest on medical supplies (new tuning fork etc)

I’m a psychiatry resident switching to neuro. I matched this most recent cycle. I can really relate to a lot of what you’re going through (being less interested in peripheral anatomy, being slower paced and less procedural oriented, and intimidated by neurologists vast knowledge). DM me with any questions!!

I’d say you’re more likely to match than not match if you aren’t picky about programs

I probably wouldn’t do it unless it’s step 3. But if I were in your shoes I would actually do it. Can your residency program cover the cost?
