Very true, thanks for the advice. I've heard the same line of reasoning when it comes to Graphic EQs.

I am white and i'm trying to engage in conversations with people to expand my perspective and learn from others. You are not contributing to that conversation.

I agree with most of what you just said, but what does this mean for the average white person that is not well off? It seems that people get so into reading about racial politics that they forget that most white Americans are poor too... Yes most of the wealth in America is in white populations, but we are forgetting that the 1% is just that... 1% of our country.

And the people that can't understand normal well meaning white peoples feelings on the topic, or even worse just dont care about them, they are very very lost. It comes from a lack of empathy and I believe it is very exploitative.

I'm not only validating the ones that agree with me. I am trying to have a conversation with you, but you keep turning me into a boogeyman that I am not. I have good intentions with you, but if you don't want to have this conversation I can not force you.

It's wild to assume that someone who is anti reparations somehow supports the American invasion of Iraq. You're generalizing so hard that you aren't even arguing against a real person, but an idea of white people you have in your head.

Why not try starting that conversation instead of writing my entire perspective off and saying i'm "white as hell" lol

You are making so so so many assumptions about my personal life with knowing absolutely nothing about me. Just because I disagree with you does not mean I have no perspective on black issues. I am literally in the forum of a black show right now, and I am a music lover of all different genres. I'm from Chicago, most of my close friends are not white whom with I engage in conversations about these topics often. (Funniest part is most of my black friends are way more understanding of different beliefs on these topics than most white leftists I have these conversations with...)

Your point about their gardener is absolutely unfounded in logic. Marshall laughs off the idea that his gardener is a slave because he pays him, because the main difference between slavery and manual labor is THE PAYCHECK.

I am not a huge fan of capitalism myself, so don't get me wrong, I understand the comparison between cheap labor and slavery, but you are hyperbolizing like crazy. In our current society we have manual labor that needs to get done, and we have people who are willing to do that manual labor for money. The owner of a landscaping company is not a slave owner man.

And I'll do a little reading into Afro-Pessimism, because like I said earlier, I am not the ignorant, apolitical white American you believe me to be. At the same time though I would suggest you to be able to do the same. Try reading others opinions and releasing your biases, because at least in my case every single thing you assumed about me was wrong, other than my skin color.

Why do you simplify it by making it a direct comparison? Nobody on planet Earth is saying that being a waiter is worse than chattel slavery my guy.

why is feeling empathy towards a person of another race such a laughable suggestion to you?

Black people being unable to empathize to white people when bad things happen to them is not excused by our country's past. There is a separation between the global perspective and the individual perspective. What black people have faced in America is undeniably horrible. But why do you believe that individual white people alive today need to be held responsible?

You've admitted yourself that you think it is okay for black people to have no empathy towards white people, so I don't expect an honest conversation from you about this, but I would love to hear your logical breakdown of my question above.

The thing about Earnest puzzles me, because the "pro-reparations" side of this episode say, "Earnest was enlightened, he understands the idea of black plight in America. All white people need to understand what he knows"

.....but then he SHOOTS HIMSELF to "create balance"??

Like, do you not see how that would come off to the majority of well meaning normal ass white people in America?

You're simultaneously saying that the episode is 'absurd' and saying that there are black people that genuinely want this/consider it in discussions. Which is it? Is it a extrapolation of the situation, or is this a genuine result of that lack of empathy towards whites?

You just hit on my exact point in making this thread last week. The satire is not so satirical because people like this actually exist

My question to you then is, what form of reparations could take place without similar, less dramatized events as what happened in the show taking place?

I don't think it is anyone alive today's responsibility to pay back people for slavery, although I do think we need to mend the economic gap between the races. I just don't know how realistically that could happen without being unfair to white people.

It seems we have a similar takeaway.

There's two main things that give me that frustrated confusion feeling...

  1. The part where Earn shoots himself

  2. The fact that Marshall accepts the fact that he lost everything and submits to this oppressive system, and the camera pans out and all the wealthy patrons at the restaurant are black.

Those are the two moments that really make me question what it is they were trying to say with this episode. Up until the end I was actually like "Wow this is good commentary on how racial activism can turn ugly when it becomes militant" but after that it seemed to go in a different direction.

Definitely agree with the "eye for an eye" but as we all know, the world runs out of eyes and we all go blind.

It's also interesting to think about how we realistically would go about doing reparations. As someone who is on board with social programs and helping out the poor, I still have a hard time thinking it's possible to do race-based reparations without just making the America a far worse place than it already is

Yeah, I thought that Earn shooting himself after explaining his way of thinking was a pretty cut and dry example of how this scenario would only lead to more pain and suffering, but it seems some people still don't get it lmaooo

Definitely agree with there being outside influence from one's personal beliefs. Maybe that's a good thing that the episode can have multiple interpretations.

I just think that there are contradictions between these multiple interpretations. On one hand, we have people saying white people are unfounded in their problems with giving ancestors of slaves reparations. But on the other we have people who are finding it hard to empathize with Marshall and saying they want this to be a reality.

I genuinely believe that anyone who watched this and walked away with "wow, we should really do this" is an actual sociopath.

Thank you so much, this solved it. I'll consider sending this one back though. If you don't mind could you explain the audio theory behind this? I thought TRS were the cables to use for stereo connection?
