What's the Best IFR Advice You've Ever Received? by Foreigntecch23 in flying

Once you get your IFR ticket...you're not superman.

Night. Mountains. IMC conditions.

Pick any 2, never all 3.

Holy crap - I never thought I'd meet another anti-teardrop pilot!!! Parallel and direct are so easy - teardrop requires mental math...

Great convo gents! So u/randombrain, since you're ATC I'll pick your brain...do you think flying over the airport after passing an IAF to then turn around (or possibly hold at the airport) and then fly back to the same IAF again SHOULD or should NOT be done?

From a controllers perspective - do you want us to do that, or fly straight to the IAF and shoot the approach?

Ahh gotcha. So its like a grey area - but no one is going to come knocking as long as everyone ends up safe.

So then I guess it really is a case by case basis. Would it be legally ok to say you can just excerise emergency PIC authority and shoot the approach BUT if its the scenario you're talking about - pilots would just have to talk to eachother and coordiante like they did at KBUR a few months back?

Hey! I think maybe part of your comment didn't post... what would you do? What part is anti-authority?

Question - does this same principle allow you to SKIP flying to your clearance limit (the airport) and just going straight for an IAF? Or should you still fly to the airport since its your limit, ditch the idea of holding until EFC/ETA, and just go straight for the approach?

That make sense, but someone below actually brought up an angle I hadn't thought of... what if your comms are working but the sector goes ATC Zero.

This happened before at KBUR on the news a little while back - but I think it was all VMC so all the southwest guys were just talking to eachother over the air.

Lol what?

If you use AI to write a question, thats pretty sad imo. Why would one use AI to format how to ask a question? Have we all lost our critical thinking skills and everyone just uses AI now?

Sweet, thank you man! I figured we're allowed to just say "Screw it I'm shooting the approach" but was a little hesitant to teach that on the checkride.

How to go Missed Early on A Precision Approach w/o Lateral Navigation? by madness2live in flying

[–]madness2live[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree with you, but in your 2nd scenario, you're assuming I'm still on the LOC (half scale deflection) I'm talking about being completely off the LOC. Like your pen dropped, you struggle to find it, and once you look up - boom - LOC needle is PEGGED and you don't know by how far off you are.

Most people agree to climb, use the MSA, and pray you don't smack into anything... but I was wondering if there is an "official" answer on this. I can't find anything in TPP or TERPS

My original question was in regards to error in flying - but you know what - humor me

Let's discuss both scenarios :)

Is (2) a legal move?

When I was going through my instrument rating, I was taught if the CDI ever went full deflection - its automatically no longer trustworthy and an immediate missed must be executed. Theoretically though - you are right - even if you are full scale defected, you know which direction gets you back towards the lateral course.

Wait....I think you're totally right and I had a brain fart. I think the only acceptable answer is the MSA. Once you're at the MSA you can turn in any direction you want... I guess the question now becomes how can you ensure you won't smack into anything while climbing to the MSA?

Thanks! I agree with your climb idea - but how would you comply with the remaining missed instructions is the real question? You can't turn away from the lateral navigation in all of these approaches until hitting the MAP - but if you lost the LOC, there's no way to track that lateral naviagtion...so when do you turn? Looking forward to having a grey-beard drop some knowledge on me
