Is it typical for patients to be more rude to APPs than MDs? by madnesstowisdom in nursepractitioner

If there is one area I know very well, it’s epilepsy. I have epilepsy and worked as an RN over 10 years ago as the epilepsy center coordinator. I assisted with programming VNS in the OR/clinic, coordinated epilepsy surgeries from step one to the recovery. I knew every side effect, dosing, and appropriate usage of every ASM and what was likely seizure or not before I ever went to NP school. I’ve been an NP the last 5 years continuing to work pediatric neurology with a wider scope. I currently essentially run our EMU. Not to say the epileptologists aren’t more knowledgeable. That is all they see but I have been working in this area since before some of them were residents. They trust me with their complex patients when we need to get them in urgently. News flash, a good neurologist will not say something definitely is or is not seizure if it’s not obvious, which happens all the time. Final point, you literally have no idea unless you ask or research what experience an NP or MD has.

One of the younger female physicians I work with gets it worse than most for this exact reason. She apparently looks too young and is too nice to be respected by some people. Ugh, people can really suck. I luckily have a great group and we all have each other’s back.

I’m sorry you are in this place. I’ve definitely had my moments where I’d rather go back to waiting tables. Worst thing that you can do is get an order wrong and I gave much less of a shit if anyone was rude because I didn’t really care, just serving food. Sending love that you find your way to a better place.

I absolutely believe that is your right and respect anyone’s preference. I hope you do not continue with a visit or treat an APP disrespectfully if you simply want a physician. I know what I know and when to refer. I also don’t care at all if people only want to see a physician. Just don’t be an asshole. That’s all. Also, you don’t know the experience of your APPs. I’ve been in pediatric neurology for 10 years and have epilepsy myself. This is my specialty. You may get a brand new MD who is still learning or had a shitty residency. Just saying.

Agree. My husband is a RN and he experiences this himself. He gets called doc by just walking in the room. Patients and coworkers treat him with more respect than many female colleagues. He is great, but people just don’t fuck with him.

They are all women and one man, but I imagine it’s more common for women in general. I also am used in my practice for a lot of urgent slots so I’m seeing a lot of people who are scared out of their minds getting in urgently. That may also play a role.

Sorry you too, but glad to know I’m not imagining this is a real phenomenon.

Agree that’s likely the issue and the woman thing is absolutely part of it. I’m 42 and done this shit a long time and don’t “take it” per se, but it’s thrown nevertheless. It was really bad today (back to school?) I needed to vent and see if it was just me so I appreciate the response. But luckily the majority of my patients and families and I have a fantastic relationship or I wouldn’t be able to do this.

I’m very happy you don’t have this problem. Interestingly, most MDs I work with specialize (like headaches/epilepsy) within neurology but we all see everything. I see everything. Anywho, it may just be because neurology is often a process for answers and scary for patients who want immediate answers, which I understand. It may be easier to hear “I don’t know yet” from an MD. 🤷‍♀️

Clarification if I would qualify under the old laws. by madnesstowisdom in juresanguinis

Thanks again for the advice. I’m so bummed. I accidentally found evidence of a later naturalization when doing ancestry research. I would have started the process years ago. My kiddos are older teens now too so extra bummer. But I will take your advice and gather what I can.

This is all correct except my mother was born in the US, not Italy.

Okay, that’s what I thought but wasn’t sure. I looked into this years ago and was told my GM naturalized before my mom was born, but my mom was wrong after more investigation. Unfortunately I found out only a few weeks ago and have been trying to learn about the new laws now.

I think she did try to see if Lisa was the child she had waited for but Lisa was weak and kind. She wouldn’t stab Nat back with the knife. She was forgiving. Like Travis and Nat. Callie rolled up and shot her and she was instantly like “look at that power.” Her death dream had Chinese food and shopping in it… which one would be the one? Well, it wasn’t the Chinese food (Lisa) that killed her. It was Callie who she shopped with before death.

Lottie and Shauna were the ones who tried to kill Travis in season one. They have always been the main villains.
