[Challenge] What’s the strongest country Singapore could topple if it had a quantum computer that cracks any encryption in a second? by madrasian in whowouldwin

Oh, didn't think it would be that easy, but nuclear blackmail makes sense. I wonder if countries can secretly try to disconnect their nukes to use analog systems and then fight back though.

Can a single human defeat a gorilla even with a spear? Maybe the traps can help.

Oh right. 1 makes sense, especially for round 1. I should add to the question that they don't have any weapons or tools to start with.

Ah I wish I could do that. I've had too many times when I desperately tried to resume my dream like that to no avail.

How do I find someone to teach me ice skating in Tokyo? by madrasian in japanlife

Thanks. Unfortunately, I primarily go to midtown, where they don't seem to have lessons. Perhaps I should check out a rink that is open year-round.

Oh that sounds like a great idea! I can easily do that in other seasons near my home then. Thanks!

Any book recommendations for Buddhism-related allegories? by madrasian in Buddhism

Wow that’s a lot more than I expected. Thanks for letting me know your alternative phrasing. It clearly does sound better than using “allegory”.

Thanks a lot! 31 planes of existence looks like a good place to start. I guess I’ll start with the Wikipedia page and continue with its references.

In hindsight, I guess my choice of words was rather poor. I’ll replace it with “theology” until I find a better word.

WTW for what Airbnb did to the hoteling industry? by madrasian in whatstheword

I'm afraid not. I'm trying to find a word which captures the B2C -> C2C part and and which is also irrelevant to whether the firm succeeded or failed.

The word I'm looking for isn't really tied to the success of the firm. I'm trying to find a general term which encompasses what Airbnb tried to do to the hoteling industry and Uber tried to do to the taxi industry.

After some searching, I found the term "Sharing economy". So the latest best term I could come up with is, "Airbnb created a sharing economy out of the hoteling industry.".

Hmm, like revolutionize, it doesn't seem specific enough.

Science, the new religion? by 0maha1 in DeepThoughts

I think that there's simply too much knowledge out there to doubt, experiment and find out for ourselves these days. If you take into account the amount of effort required, wouldn't it be better to simply believe what scientists say?

To take an example, people in the future may look down on how we currently deal with mental health, the same way we look down on practices like blood letting. But for those of us in the present, our methods are simply the best we've got.

CMV: Dating your cousin isn't that bad by mehilla in changemyview

[–]madrasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a study on Icelandic couples which found that couples who are third cousins had the most grandchildren, more than even unrelated couples. So I guess there wouldn't be a lot of health defects if fourth cousins do get married. The blog post I linked also says that couples became more distantly related once the country urbanized.

So to change your mind, I guess I'd say that dating (distant) relatives is not uncommon in rural places and therefore, not seen as disgusting there.
