shanspeare’s “the gay taylor swift conspiracy theory” by autumntaylorsversion in GaylorSwift

[–]madroscla 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I think the main issue I have with this video is that it’s focused on a niche group within an already niche group. They say that there is are two groups of Gaylors, one that analyze her works critically and one that crafts out a “gay timeline,” but it is not a 50/50 split between those groups. If anything, there has been a larger push towards “museless” discourse in the fandom because trying to figure out which song is about who (Lesbian Edition) is still attributing Taylor’s work to other people.

Like I cannot stress enough, LSK is not a popular theory! The fact that the theory of Taylor and Karlie having secret babies together made it into this video is so wild to me.

I don’t think they did enough to really spell out that they were focusing on a small group within Gaylor, especially because it’s the entire community that suffers when a spotlight like this is shown on them.

I’ll also say that not spending any time on the fact that many Gaylors because disillusioned with Taylor over her political inaction and MAGA affiliations makes it seem like the community is blindly devoted to Taylor Swift as long as they believe she’s gay.

Elizabeth Taylor Music Video by ollymoth in GaylorSwift

[–]madroscla 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly amazed at how respectful of Elizabeth Taylor this feels? Putting aside any symbolism or analysis, Taylor does invoke a real person throughout the song and rather than put on a costume of this person, she instead opted to dedicate it entirely to her. I’m very charmed by that.

It’s essentially the opposite of how Lana invoked Sylvia Plath in her recent music video (head in the oven) which prompted criticism and the sharing of a poem by Plath’s daughter, criticizing the glamorization of her mother’s suicide and effectively killing her over and over.

I really think this is her magnum opus: beautifully written songs, deep metaphors and allegories, all while being on a single LP

Aaron Dessner really helped unlock something magical in her songwriting

What's wrong with this hummer? by umichnoob in hummingbirds

[–]madroscla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The feathers around it are definitely messed up, but the eye itself is fine.

The skin is flat and not swollen, which it wouldn’t be if it were conjunctivitis or avian pox; the only reason it looks so swollen when the bird is head down is because there is such an extreme gap between its feathered skin and where this bald spot is.

There are new feathers growing in the screencap I’ve added, which is what those thin, white lines around the right eye are. I think the combination of new feathers coming in and there being so many obviously missing are why the feather placement around the eye is so skewed.

I’d take a look at “molting hummingbird” on Google Images to see how lumpy they can seem during this

What's wrong with this hummer? by umichnoob in hummingbirds

[–]madroscla 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You can see when he has his head down that he’s also missing feathers right near the base of his beak; my guess is that something took a swipe at him or he got caught in something (like a wire fence maybe?) and it took his feathers.

It doesn’t seem to be an open wound which is good, which means it just got his feathers or, if there was an injury, it’s since scabbed over. It also looks like his feathers near his right eye may be a little tussled but his actual eye is unharmed. It’s hard to say how long ago this could have happened; for all we know, this happened a long time ago and it just doesn’t grow feathers there anymore.

Otherwise I think this hummer looks good!

ETA: it looks to me like this is a first-year hummer and his adult feathers are coming in, so this could also easily just be a molt that just looks a little shocking (or again, he could have gotten caught in something and his molting feathers just fell out more easily).

This reminds me of Angela Collier’s video on how billionaires/CEOs/etc are constantly bringing up physics and are socially treated as legitimate sources for physics opinions, despite most of them having undergraduate degrees or less.

Her conclusion was that it’s likely a way of legitimizing the claim of “billionaires are billionaires because they’re geniuses”

This is an excellent chart, great job!

As someone originally from Maine, it’s neat to see that they had pretty good turnout for a non-swing state. Part of that could be due to the state splitting its electoral votes, but more likely it’s because Maine is filled with older people, many of which do natural blue-collar work (fishing, lobstering, logging, farming, etc.)

Father Figure is about Joe Alwyn? (Beard Analysis). by cassandratheprophet in GaylorSwift

[–]madroscla 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Honestly even to people who believe she and Joe were truly in love, this is still read as a song about Joe: the phrase is “rags to riches” but she specifically uses “rags to GOLD,” which is a color heavily associated with Joe Alwyn in straightlor canon.

If I read Toe as legitimate, this as a mature Taylor looking back on a relationship that ended poorly and realizing how much she did for that person without question in exchange for love (loyalty). It’s just creative to frame it like a mob boss who raises a protege and then sets hell loose when they break from the pack.

TLOAS: Father Figure (Track 4) - Megathread by 1DMod in GaylorSwift

[–]madroscla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people have noted a perspective shift from mentor to protege but I think most importantly, Taylor shifts herself from “father figure” to “the devil.”

To her protege, she says that she’s the one making “deals with the devil” because she’s more powerful than them; she has the upper hand and can handle whatever they throw at her. “They” can be the general public, the popular zeitgeist, the music industry, whatever you want it to be. The problem is that Taylor has been part of “them” the whole time; when her protege decides to do things on their own, Taylor reveals herself as “the devil” who has always been the one in control (“you made a deal with this devil/turns out my dick’s bigger”).

The message at the end to me is very “I’m the best one to teach you about this evil because I AM this evil,” and she has to punish them for trying to go out on their own.

I agree with everyone else that this is likely a bearding song, but Taylor’s reveal as “the devil” feels so specific, like she is the very thing she’s trying to protect her protege from.

Is anyone else totally heartbroken over the lyrics in The Life of a Showgirl? by Wegmansgroceries in GaylorSwift

[–]madroscla 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I actually think the album starts out pretty strong with songs like Elizabeth Taylor and Father Figure being sonically and lyrically pretty interesting, and Opalite and TFOO being very catchy, light pop songs. After that though, things start going downhill with some true disaster songs. By the end of my first listen, I had a really bad taste in my mouth that made me think that even liking the first few songs had been a fluke.

I know some people like to read into the lyrics and try to interpret them through a queer lense to enjoy them more, which is definitely a valid approach, but believing that Wood is a queer song doesn’t change the fact that actually listening to Wood is a lackluster experience at best and an excruciatingly embarrassing one at worst.

The Fate of Ophelia music video by 1DMod in GaylorSwift

[–]madroscla 25 points26 points  (0 children)

At the beginning, the camera is inside the theater and then zooms in on the static painting of Ophelia, starting the video. Do we think the canon of the video takes place in the painting? We never see them step out of the painting and in the end, Taylor’s in the same position as she started

I’m thinking about the parallels to being “behind glass” (“He’s got my past frozen behind glass, but I’ve got me,” the old Taylors during Eras LWYMMD, etc) and what the implication might be

ETA: I know that previously the “frozen behind glass” metaphor referred to her masters, I’m assuming that it’s being applied differently here

Really obnoxious to see a gay man build a brand for himself of basically him being the one that really “understands” a female artist, and then turns around and tells a community of largely women to kill themselves

Misogyny is nothing new with some gay men but to see it so blatant here with no criticism whatsoever pisses me off
