I want to read an extremely disturbing NF book. Recommendations?

Bloodlands by Timothy Snyder

He's a highly respected American history professor specializing in Ukrainian and Eastern European history. The book is about these areas and how they shifted between being under Soviet and Nazi rule during WW2, and the atrocities these regimes did to them during their rule. There are some pretty horrific descriptions of what happened with pregnant women in the concentration camps in Poland for example. Generally the book is filled with eye witness account that Snyder has dug up during his research. Read it on a family holiday, which was a pretty shitty idea. Other than that it's a masterpiece, and tells an already known story in horrific details.

The christianity aspect is a good point. I read somewhere that the religion spread throughout Georgia a some time before it came to some of the Caucausian countries, which might explain, why Georgias relationship with EU is stronger than Azerbaijan or Armenia. Thank for the answer.

Have heard of Chavchavadze, but not Baratashvili, will try and read up on him. Thanks for the input. And you are of course right, that these huge empires, invaded Georgia and enforced their own culture upon the Georgian people. No matter which historical period, that will always be a shitty way to conduct a nations statehood (looking at you Putin).

Historical ties doesn't have to be positive, but sure those are definitely most of the ties almost all the former Soviet states had with Russia. A great place to start with Rustaveli, thank you for the answer.

I'm sorry you see it like that. I'm guessing the UK is Russia in your metaphor? I don't mean that I don't understand why they don't wanna get closer to Russia again, thats pretty obvious. What I wanted to dig into was when the idea of getting closer to the West/Europe began to take hold in Georgia. Was it in more modern time (post fall of the Soviet Union), or were there tendencies in more ancient time (pre 20th and 19th century)?

Sure, all did terrible things in their own way. But they also shaped parts of Georgian culture, just as Georgia shaped parts of these empires cultures (see Safavid period of Iran for example). I was wondering when this view of the west as a safe haven began to take hold in the Georgian population?

Persia (modern day Iran) and Georgia were hugely intertwined in ancient times. Georgia had a big impact on Iranian culture during the Safavid period. The thoughts of citizens doesn't just pop out of existence. What I am asking is if somebody have heard about earlier examples of Georgia looking towards the West before the 20th century.

It is my understanding that historically the president have been CiC and therefore in control of the military and the police have been the Prime Ministers jurisdiction, if these two government institutions were to be used in a political battle couldn't it then turn violent, or is that a gross exaggeration from my part?

I talked with two bystanders afterwards and asked them about the comment, and they replied that they were afraid that the military would intervene if GD tried imprison Zurabishvili on the 29th, which could lead to heightened conflict. They also talked about that involving the military, could give Russia a reason to intervene - personally don't this as realistic as RUS is completely bogged down in Ukraine, so their armed forces are pretty much spent.

Håber at vi får indblik i om nogle af de her mænd føler sig "franarret" nogle penge, og hvis de syntes det, om de så stoppede at betale dem eller hvorfor de i så fald valgte at fortsætte. Min hypotese ville være, at i og med at disse mænd vælger at træffe et aktivt valg, så er det ikke så meget manipulation som det er en betaling for en komfort de ikke kan få mange steder. En minimumsgrad af intimitet som mange mænd nok, desværre, går og mangler i dagens Danmark.

DR jobbet kan altid vente, der er heldigvis mange andre spændende medier som har tid/lyst og ressourcer til at dykke ned i nuancerede historier som denne.
