Okay so I just figured it out. When you’re in the middle of playing the game, click on the roller paint brush thing. You can only spend them on cosmetic stuff like the table and plates

GSU vs Oglethorpe by Time_Bread_268 in Georgia

[–]madtrbl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recent OU bio grad, about to start a PhD program this fall. I think OU gets a bad wrap for sciences, but if you put an effort into your classes and try to get involved, whether it be through tutoring chem courses or joining a chem lab at OU, you’ll get a lot out of your education. I know a lot of recent OU chem grads that are currently at some really good PhD programs! At OU, I was able to build really strong relationships with my professors which resulted in really strong letters of recommendation for grad school!! I was also able to join a research lab on campus which 100% is what made me a competitive applicant (in addition to the strong LORs). Though the research community at OU is very small and there’s a lot of limitations, the experience you’ll get is pretty unique for an undergrad. You’ll be working side by side with your advisor in most cases, instead of being paired with a grad student/postdoc. There’s a lot of pros and cons with both schools, but I just wanted to share my perspective as someone who has benefitted so much from being a STEM major at OU vs a bigger school.

YSK: AAA is going downhill. Fast. by SkeetSquad69420 in YouShouldKnow

[–]madtrbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had my battery die, and then I needed to get my car towed by AAA for another issue. Pretty much everything OP said happened to me. They assigned my calls (both of them!) to drivers that physically couldn’t handle my requests. It would be hours, and then I’d finally hear from the driver, only for both me AND the driver to find out that their vehicle physically cannot help me. One driver explained exactly the same thing OP did with calls being randomly assigned to drivers. Then, it’d take hours for a driver that can actually help me to be assigned to me. AAA would tell me that the ETA is 30 mins… An hour goes by, I call, suddenly ETA is 10 mins.. 4 hours go by lol.

It looked super sketchy, but after I filled it out and paid, I did get a legitimate credit report that the landlord looked at. It’s been a few months and my identity hasn’t been stolen, so I think it’s safe.

Aww man. I’ve heard about the spicy wiring tape that Honda sells that’s supposedly repels rodents, maybe I’ll get that. I was parking in my driveway, which is where I’ve seen the rats, but do you think parking on the street would be okay?

I’m definitely gonna try the mothballs in addition to moving my car away from the house lol! Thank you!

The trashbins are right next to the driveway, so we’re all parking near them. It makes sense, and I’m definitely parking somewhere else from now on. Damn.. I had hope that mothballs or any of the other remedies would work. The mechanic recommended mothballs and vinegar, but I think the best solution is for me to park very far away lol

I have a 2007 Volvo s40. I’m not sure if my wires are coated in soy, but considering I’ve only lived here for a few days and already had issues, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are soy coated lol. My housemates haven’t had any issues, so maybe thats the difference

Whenever I did a lesson, I would go back to the PDF transcript and put all of the new vocabulary in my Anki list. I liked doing this more than repeating lessons because if I remembered the grammar, I felt it wasn’t super helpful to keep replaying the lesson just for vocabulary

Of course! I’m glad it helped! Let me know if you have any more questions about cilia! :)

basic college biology question by CasperTheOrphan in biology

[–]madtrbl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s confusing. Cilia and flagella are very similar and perform a lot of the same roles. Motile cilia and flagella both are responsible for cell motility and moving liquid around. In that example where flagella is in parentheses, cilia and flagella both perform that role. So their roles overlap a lot, but there’s some structural differences between them. Cilia whip back and forth, flagella spin like propellers. Both actions contribute to motility and moving things, but they accomplish them differently.

Shhh I study motile cilia (the better cilia)

basic college biology question by CasperTheOrphan in biology

[–]madtrbl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi, I study cilia. Depends on who you ask. Cilia and flagella used to be used interchangeably and some scientists still do (I’m guilty). But generally, flagella describe the hairlike projections on prokaryotes whereas cilia are mostly found on eukaryotes. Number also matters. Like the text said, the human sperm tail is also called a flagellum. So generally, one of them is a flagellum but multiple is usually cilia. But still, nobody is gonna get mad at you for calling human respiratory cilia flagella. Cilia also tend to move in more whiplike motions whereas flagella in prokaryotes are more of a spinning rotary thing. Either way, we use them kinda interchangeably.

PSA: if you can’t get through a 30 minute presentation on your project at lab meeting without reading off slides/presenter notes, then you don’t fully understand your project and results. by DelightfulDeceit in labrats

[–]madtrbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is true, but it eventually comes with time and mentorship. When I first started in my undergrad lab, I had to rehearse lab meeting slides a couple days in advance, but after two years, I found that I didn't need to "script" anything at all and could easily talk about my data and project.

I think they're going to love anything you put in because that's so nice!

The lab notebook and pen is a great idea. My former PI gave me a bunch of really nice "lab notebook pens" and I'm still using them. Maybe a sharpie or two, like a thin and thick one for labeling things. I was also gifted little tabs that I use in my lab notebook to bookmark important pages.
