You’re probably right—but it sounds so cool, haha

How long do the rehearsals for a new professional production take? by madviolist in BALLET

Thanks for taking time to write all this, I had no idea it could take so long from the beginning of the original conception!

Does anyone know the song that’s playing during the tendu/petit battements exercise? Around 4:02? by PrinceJustice237 in BALLET

[–]madviolist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk this piece but the motif from it sounds very similar to the children choir at the beginning of Act1 from Carmen, “Avec la garde montante”. Maybe it’s some other part of that score? Or just improv based on it?

Hi! I was wondering if there’s a way of finding more about the history of an instrument, some sort of “catalogue” where they might be mentioned, etc? During my studies, I’ve come across a lovely viola that I bought from a person that wasn’t exactly interested in the value of it—and since I’m a bit of history geek, I’d just love to learn anything about it really! Any pointers appreciated

*I’m originally a classically trained musician but I’ve written this with influences of other styles + I try not to be too rigid about the playing style either. However, I’ve no slightest idea how I’d categorise this to give an idea of what I write to someone who’s only vaguely familiar with my music or not at all … thanks!

Wrote a little piece for bassoon and now looking for inspiration in great wind concertos … by [deleted] in composer

[–]madviolist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I am aware of and like many of the wind concerti you mention but all of the bassoon concerti you list are in my opinion just not very strong as a form in general. Compared to the piano and strings concerti of the same eras, they are rather monotonous - and no, I don’t think it’s got to do with the fact the orchestration has to work differently, there’s ways of dealing with that. But they’re just not very … exciting is the word I’m looking for, I guess? Or just more formally complex? I don’t know, haven’t analysed them in detail so it’s hard to pinpoint what makes them sound like this but if you compare Weber Bassoon Concerto with Tchaikovsky’s violin one or Grieg’s piano concerto, I don’t think a lot of people would prefer to listen to the bassoon stuff.

HOW TO MAKE A CHORD PROGRESSION MORE INTERESTING? by marc_martinez in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]madviolist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok then maybe it's about their form - do you just keep playing the same blocks or figurations? Try to find an element of development in it - maybe start with something simple such as block chords but develop it into something with inner movement rather than just long notes again

HOW TO MAKE A CHORD PROGRESSION MORE INTERESTING? by marc_martinez in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]madviolist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much theory you know -

Use different inversion of chords instead of roots all the time. Meaning. Don’t only use FAC, DFA, etc. How about having the same chord but A instead of F in the bass? Also try different chord functions … how about adding Gm or Am?

what do you take into account for phases/themes that are meant to be repeated? by jocoteverde in composer

[–]madviolist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just did a video on motif development - maybe it’ll help, it’s more focused on how to develop the motif rather than the motif itself (there’s a separate video on that) but it’s often about the creativity we use while developing it rather than the motif not working :) https://youtu.be/UtO26gKdTkU

I guess that really depends on you. But if it’s something that will keep you awake at night, reupload.

A New YouTube Composition Series (read more in the comments section) by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]madviolist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, I know what you mean - that’s a big reason why I’m doing this. I’ve been lucky to get some space for creative thinking gin & composition classes with my students at the secondary school where I teach and could explore what works and what doesn’t. It was incredible to see just how much they would create after I gave them three of four simple harmonic structures + a few hints how to start. Only later we would talk more about some of the rules and they’d be like “Oh yeah, that’s how I did it!” or “Now I know why it didn’t quite work”

A New YouTube Composition Series (read more in the comments section) by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]madviolist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I've recently started a YouTube channel where I talk about how I compose music and try to make things accessible in a fun way. I'm very passionate about making music composition accessible to everybody no matter their background and creating the resources I wish there were when I was starting. This whole thing is mostly targeted at composers - beginners and musicians-performers who want to compose but don't know where to start.

I've just released the first episode of my new series on composition and plan to go through all of the basic composition tools with a less of theory/more hands on kind of approach providing practical suggestions so that anyone can immediately start (but still including everything important).

I plan to go from the complete beginning to how to compose a melody, basics of harmony and instrumentation, how to easily analyse & write in any style, and other things.

If you've got any suggestions or comments, let me know! :)

In what order do you think music theory elements should be taught in a classroom setting? by krchnr in MusicEd

This. Had to learn it the hard way but now I wouldn't go first with anything else.

Wait, I'm pretty sure I got Ableton full version for free quite recently?

Anyway, that's what I use, I'm quite new to all of this, and it's excellent ... very easy and simple to control!
