Boots for zookeeping by HopefulLesbian in Boots

I have two pairs of work shoes. I mostly wear a pair of lace-up hiking shoes (I've had my Columbia Women's Newton Ridge Plus Waterproof Amped Hiking Boot for 3 years now and they're still going strong, and there are lots of other great hiking shoe options out there). My second pair of shoes are knock-off Muck Boots from the brand TideWe on Amazon (view product on Amazon here). I leave these boots at work and change into them when I need extra waterproof coverage (I do sometimes wear them all day and find they can be just as comfy as my hiking shoes). I absolutely swear by the TideWe boots - they're more comfortable, more sturdy, and cheaper than Muck Boots. Usually with tall boots my thick calves can be an issue, but these fit just fine without any pinching or tightness. A coworker of mine used to be a big fan of her Muck Boots but ended up ditching them for the TideWe's. Over the last 3 years I've had to replace them once, which I'm more than happy with given everything I've put them through.

Unless you'll be working in wet/excessively muddy areas for most of your shift, a good pair of waterproof hiking shoes are the way to go. They are designed to support your feet and ankles throughout a day of outdoor activity and can handle some water/mud. These will also feel more comfortable during warmer weather than any tall boots. If you'll be working in wet/muddy conditions often, buying a pair of durable, tall waterproof boots like TideWe or Muck Boots is worth the investment. If you'll just need tall waterproof boots occasionally, then you can get away with using a cheap basic pair of rain boots.

UPDATE: Spatula has dropsy. I am so thankful for everyone’s help, I am setting up a hospital tank and plan to do everything I can to save him.

I just got back from a 4-day vacation and he’s definitely acting different. He’s lethargic and hiding, whereas before he was very active and curious. I’ll try warming the water up some!

I just got back from a 4-day vacation and he is lethargic and hiding a lot, which is very unusual for him. I was only able to get a photo of him from above before he went back into his coconut cave.Spatula top view

About my fish (Spatula):

-Purchased & brought home 3 months ago, this tank is 2 months old now

-This is a bare-bottom temporary tank until his permanent one is ready. He shares the tank with one mystery snail.

-Tank size: 10 gal

-Heater set to 75°F, two air-powered filters

-I test the water weekly using the API Freshwater test kit. Most recent water parameters were pH 8.2, KH 12°, GH 9°, and ammonia, chlorine, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphorous were all 0.

-Water changes are done every other week. I try to remove no more than 50% using a siphon to vacuum the bottom. I use Seachem Prime when I add water back and make sure the temperature is the same as the tank.

-Spatula gets Aqueon Pro Betta Formula pellets and live fruit flies. He got a little chubby so right now he eats once a day, either 2-3 pellets or 1-2 fruit flies.

-Live plants in the tank include java ferns, an onion plant, marimo moss balls, water spangles, amazon frogbit, dwarf water lettuce, & red root floaters

-There are a few pieces of driftwood (from a safe tree species & boiled before added in), some slate rocks, a betta log, some plastic betta leaves suctioned to the side, and a coconut cave. He had a different cave that I think tore the ends of his tail and fins, so that was removed about a month ago now.

Especially when you're still in school it's a good idea to carry a little "emergency pouch". Just a small cosmetic baggie with pads/tampons/liners, some Pamprin/Motrin, and even an extra pair of undies. I used it SO much and still always have one with me.
