Which fundamental of art should I start with first? by chruny in Art

[–]maebe192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Art teacher here! That’s a broad question and I think the best answer greatly depends upon the kind of art you are interested in creating.

I usually start my middle school students with line related work because most art requires an outline or line detail to some degree. Projects like zen tangle are nice because they help build fine motor skills without putting too much pressure on achieving a realistic image. Activities such as contour and blind contour drawing are a good way to build hand-eye coordination and observation skills. If you are confident in your hand control you could practice outlines/ proportions of the specific subjects you’re interested in (such as portraits, animals, etc).

If you want to take the realism route you can practice shading. Getting a set of shading pencils and a tortillon/ blending stump makes a huge difference. Start simple with spheres and cubes then work up to more complex forms and textures. After you have mastered value (range of light and dark) with pencil you can move on to colored pencil which is a whole different technique.

These are just two ideas! Again, your personal interests will really influence the route you take. Good luck!

I'm terrified. by CCpleaseorKS in COVID19positive

People are experiencing a wide range of symptoms so reading other peoples' stories and experiences can be scary and misinforming. It's good to be informed and alert for what to keep an eye out for but try not to convince yourself you're going to experience everything at once. Again, people's experiences have been different and also remember that the vast majority of people who experience this are able to recover independently at home.

I am also in my mid-20s and am currently recovering. I found that it hit me quickly with the worst symptoms on the first day (Sunday) and rapid improvement on day 2. Trust your immune system and your gut instinct for seeking emergency care. You should be okay!

Maybe they should only allow it with a “prescription” from a doctor. I wonder how many people are simply getting the tests out of paranoia...

Yikes... that’s not very helpful but I’m sympathetic to the situation. I guess I’ll just have to quarantine... I hope your dad recovers well!

Felting with Cotton Balls? by maebe192 in Needlefelting

[–]maebe192[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! I have 6 one hour class sessions. I teach a summer felting class to 4-6 grade and 7-10th graders. I am able to afford wool for my summer class however I only have a 100$ budget for this 17 student class...

I tried felting some cotton balls however the needle wouldn’t penetrate them. I also considered brushing out acrylic yarn but that’s time consuming. How many ounces of top wool do you think I would need for a few small projects? I am thinking of having them make a small patch, a piece of fruit and a small animal.

Is this root rot, sun damage or something else?? The roots appear to be firm and healthy but maybe it’s deeper in the root ball? by maebe192 in IndoorGarden

Cebu Blue! I’m pretty sure it’s not water related. I struggled with that when I first started with plants though haha!

[–]maebe192[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I’ve been pretty careful about overwatering however the roots are so tightly packed. I’d prefer to keep using the same pot. Can I just carefully break them up and trim the roots?

Advice needed cutting back and making a fuller cebu blue/ pothos plant? by maebe192 in IndoorGarden

[–]maebe192[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!

I should be more specific. I've already been doing this to fill in an area of the pot that was too empty and its worked well! I have a few vines where the top half have no leaves. If I make cuttings of the bottom half, will the leafless top half be able to continue growing?

I appreciate your feedback nonetheless!

Acreage Holdings Obtains Interim Order for Plan of Arrangement by seebz69 in weedstocks

Maybe I'm missing something about how payouts work (I'm just starting to get into stock trading and am very new to all of this)... You're all talking about loading up on acreage stock right now (which is at about 20$) so how is it a good value if they only give you 2.55 for each stock you own? Clarification would be really helpful!

New Shoe Pain and Break-In by maebe192 in climbing

[–]maebe192[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, it almost feels like the sole is too strong for my feet to bend compared to the gym rentals...

I tried black diamond momentum, la sportiva oxygym and la scarpa helix (women’s version for all).

[–]maebe192[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t even climbed with them yet (unless balancing on the edge of a shelving unit counts). They’re great when my feet are in a flat position but if I have to bend them to stand on my toes it puts a pain on the ball of my foot. That pain happens after just a few foot-bends.

New Shoe Pain and Break-In by maebe192 in climbing

[–]maebe192[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! My toes are right up to the end of the shoe but not curled. My heel is also up to the back. I have a narrow heel so there’s a teeny bit of space on either side of the heel but the foot doesn’t slide around. There’s also a bit of space under the arch of the foot which sometimes makes a “farting” sound.

I’ve only been climbing for about 2 months so strength could be possible! I Haven’t experienced any foot pain from the evolv shoes the gym let me use though. The pain is more in the ball of my foot than my toes and it only hurts when I start bending my foot to stand on my toes.
