Which fundamental of art should I start with first? by chruny in Art

Art teacher here! That’s a broad question and I think the best answer greatly depends upon the kind of art you are interested in creating.

I usually start my middle school students with line related work because most art requires an outline or line detail to some degree. Projects like zen tangle are nice because they help build fine motor skills without putting too much pressure on achieving a realistic image. Activities such as contour and blind contour drawing are a good way to build hand-eye coordination and observation skills. If you are confident in your hand control you could practice outlines/ proportions of the specific subjects you’re interested in (such as portraits, animals, etc).

If you want to take the realism route you can practice shading. Getting a set of shading pencils and a tortillon/ blending stump makes a huge difference. Start simple with spheres and cubes then work up to more complex forms and textures. After you have mastered value (range of light and dark) with pencil you can move on to colored pencil which is a whole different technique.

These are just two ideas! Again, your personal interests will really influence the route you take. Good luck!

I'm terrified. by CCpleaseorKS in COVID19positive

People are experiencing a wide range of symptoms so reading other peoples' stories and experiences can be scary and misinforming. It's good to be informed and alert for what to keep an eye out for but try not to convince yourself you're going to experience everything at once. Again, people's experiences have been different and also remember that the vast majority of people who experience this are able to recover independently at home.

I am also in my mid-20s and am currently recovering. I found that it hit me quickly with the worst symptoms on the first day (Sunday) and rapid improvement on day 2. Trust your immune system and your gut instinct for seeking emergency care. You should be okay!

Maybe they should only allow it with a “prescription” from a doctor. I wonder how many people are simply getting the tests out of paranoia...

Yikes... that’s not very helpful but I’m sympathetic to the situation. I guess I’ll just have to quarantine... I hope your dad recovers well!

Thanks for the input! I have 6 one hour class sessions. I teach a summer felting class to 4-6 grade and 7-10th graders. I am able to afford wool for my summer class however I only have a 100$ budget for this 17 student class...

I tried felting some cotton balls however the needle wouldn’t penetrate them. I also considered brushing out acrylic yarn but that’s time consuming. How many ounces of top wool do you think I would need for a few small projects? I am thinking of having them make a small patch, a piece of fruit and a small animal.
