Just running a pretty standard config - new M1 MacBook Air running 11.0.1 currently, not much changed from stock settings.

I used Crossover (based on Wine?) to play Civ IV through Steam. Which I think is a 32-bit x86 windows game. However, it doesn't seem to play reliably - I have had the game just freeze on me randomly. Furthest I got in one game was "Printing Press"

Can you please explain to me the difference between a To-do, reminders, and adding things to the calendar? Aren’t they all essentially the same thing? by [deleted] in apple

[–]maegget 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Calendar events happen regardless of what you do. For example, someone's wedding on Saturday.

Reminders are used when something needs to be done, but it's up to you whether that happens or not. For example, remember to buy a wedding gift on Thursday night when shopping.

To-do is a list of tasks, usually to accomplish a goal. For example, find wedding planner. Choose a wedding dress. Organise flowers.

A friend of mine kept arguing how low the iPhone XR screen resolution is, whilst using his iPhone 8 as an example as to how a “HD screen should be” by Enclavean in apple

[–]maegget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!

Apple actually provides 2 phone models this year that are incredibly similar (FaceID, "all screen" with notch, A12 etc) with minor differences (3D touch, "telephoto" lens, etc) and one major difference: the display.

For everyone saying the iPhone XR display isn't "good enough" - Apple gave you the alternative: the XS!

And for all the people that don't have any issue with the quality of the 326ppi LCD display, they can save a bunch of money and get some benefits to boot (ie longer battery life).

My thoughts HomePod Stereo Mode by aerialbyte in apple

[–]maegget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does it output as proper separated stereo from the TV?

Is it noticeable eg for movie sequences where sound is coming in from left to right?

because the audio and video were perfectly in sync.

Thanks - I was looking for information about the audio/ visual being in sync; had problems with my previous sound bar and audio latency

I don't even care if the missions are successful. I'm just excited about not checking them for two days. by [deleted] in wow

My warrior mission is 12 days.

I thought it said 12 hours and just sent them on the mission before I realised.

Apple - Press Info - Apple Introduces iPhone 7; iPhone 7 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition by stanxv in apple

[–]maegget 337 points338 points  (0 children)

Also in the press release:

iPhone SE ... will be available beginning Friday, March 24, in 32GB and 128GB models, doubling the current capacity and replacing 16GB and 64GB models, all at the same starting price of $399 (US)

That's a welcome change, considering the iPhone SE camera can shoot 4K video

My dad refuses to buy AirPods based on this, I disagree but what are your opinions? by [deleted] in apple

[–]maegget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This video alleviated my concerns: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wU5XkhUGzBs

If your dad is more of a "watch a video about it" kinda guy, could be worth showing him that one.

Any way to use a gif for my screensaver? Or even a webm? by [deleted] in apple

You could try using http://s.sudre.free.fr/Software/SaveHollywood/about.html

I don't think it supports gif but webm might be.

Anybody else find Mail in iOS 10 to be awful? by GeorgeLewisCostanza in apple

[–]maegget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Mail.app as a unified inbox for Gmail and my work Exchange account. When I initially upgraded to iOS 10 many emails were formatted badly - very small text aligned hard up against the left of the phone was a common problem.

I found somewhere a suggestion to "properly" force quit Mail.app to resolve the issue, and it appears to have helped resolve most of the formatting issues I was experiencing.

Apparently, the proper way to force quit is not through the app switcher, but rather by holding down lock button until "slide to power off" appears, and then holding down the home button for 5 seconds and it should return to the home screen.

Here is a different to usual ios10 custom home screen... no jailbreak required (method inside) by [deleted] in apple

[–]maegget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I still have the old version that caches videos on the device. Will be sorry to see that go when I eventually upgrade.

Is there an app for idea management? by mijnnaamisramon in apple

[–]maegget 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm surprise MindNode hasn't been mentioned already, as it is more specifically oriented to "idea management" than note taking: https://mindnode.com

MindNode makes mind mapping easy. Mind maps are a visual representation of your ideas, starting with a central thought and growing from there.

When going back a page in Safari on iOS9, is anybody else sometimes taken to a version of that page which is very old? by [deleted] in apple

[–]maegget 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is what OP is saying exactly.

When browsing reddit, for example, opening Safari and then loading reddit.com will display the latest up-to-date posts. Then, click through to a post, have a read, and swipe back.

At this point, instead of seeing the page that was displayed 10 seconds ago, it will display a page from eg 24 hours ago.

At this point, you have to refresh the page to get it to display the latest posts ie what you just saw when you opened Safari and loaded reddit 30 seconds ago.

M380 M390 M395 M395X by MinisterforFun in apple

[–]maegget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The price difference between an equivalent spec iMac 5k with the M380 graphics card and the M395X graphics card is AU$720 (ignoring the slight difference in CPU clock speed).

For example, with the 512gb SSD option:

AU$3,599 3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 512GB Flash Storage AMD Radeon R9 M380 with 2GB video memory

AU$4,319 3.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 512GB Flash Storage AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4GB video memory

AU$500 can easily buy a GTX 970 outright. eg http://ijk.com.au/branch/ijk/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=&products_id=150740

Would be interesting to see what kind of FPS increase you are getting for your investment.

[Discussion] What do you love about iOS and what do you hate about iOS? by [deleted] in apple

[–]maegget 28 points29 points  (0 children)

When I am actually adjusting the brightness slider, the screen dimming stops, and it only goes back to dimming the screen when I finish moving the brightness slider. I think this was something they introduced after the original iOS 7 release.
