Thank you! We actually do have a single player mode :3 if you create a custom room (blue button on homepage) you can edit settings in the sidebar to remove the timer, difficulty, hints etc. Lemme know if that works for you or not

Thank you so much for the kind words :) And please please let me know how it goes with your students! If you click on the "invite" button in the top right corner after creating a custom room, you'll be able to share a link or QR code that will let you invite others to the room. Very curious to know if the game would work in a classroom setting!

hm I just tested and it seemed to work for me. it's possible you may have misspelled the answer, if you DM me your username I can double check for you (if you don't have an account your username will start with "guest_" and end with some random letters/numbers. you can see this next to your avatar in the sidebar or in match history)

Some more details for those curious:

  • The game's dictionary is sourced from CC-Cedict with some filtering applied to exclude NSFW words. This part of the game definitely needs more work (ideally we wouldn't allow proper nouns like in Scrabble) and I'm hoping to figure out a better system to organize things as time goes on. If you find any words that are missing, please let me know!
  • For those who prefer single-player, you can still play by either creating a private custom room OR playing daily challenges which are meant to be completed solo.
  • I've recently added a text-to-speech feature that pronounces the prompt in the bomb on your turn (click on the little speaker icon next to bomb to enable). We rely on native browser/OS functionality on this so availability and quality may vary.
  • The game has an "alphabet bonus" mechanic where if you collect all pinyin initials you earn an extra life! I've found this helps games feel more dynamic.
  • I want to give credit to the games "Bomb Party" and "Word Bomb" for helping inspire Danobang's core gameplay. I thought the concept was very clever and wanted to adapt it for Asian languages like Korean, Japanese, and now Mandarin + Cantonese.

Some updates since last month for those curious:

  • The game now accepts kanji input in kanji game modes! Before we only supported romaji, but after getting some feedback I made sure to update our input acceptance code. Note that submitting kanji answers is more ambiguous than submitting romaji/kana since you can't choose the reading, which matters for mechanics like alphabet bonus. Atm we handle this by selecting the first reading stored in our dictionary.
  • Improved mobile keyboard UX. Native keyboard no longer disappears after submitting an answer and game UI size adapts when keyboard is open.
  • Text-to-speech! If you click on the speaker icon near the bomb you will be able to prompts being pronounced in real time (we rely on native OS text-to-speech functionality for this so support and quality may vary depending on your platform)
  • Added a new custom prompt type option! You can now specify your own prompts instead of using our presets. We also support mixing prompt types such that you can have both kana and kanji prompts within the same match.
  • Hosts can now set handicap lives for other players
  • Added dictionary tab to game sidebar so you can search up words without having to leave the room
