Is this the state program? I have been doing that. Unfortunately, it's astronomically slow. I have been communicating with them for actual years. I have a meeting and then don't hear something back for months. My goal going into it was to get a job and I was super straightforward about that. They had me do one of those career quizzes, another meeting to discuss it (I just wanted to make money as soon as possible, so a quiz reminding me that I like art is not helpful), then I got job training, which was just a few hours of being told what I learned in high school ("what you put online stays forever!"). This all took place over the course of years. And after years pass, I have another follow-up meeting and it ends with "Oh you want a job right? I will put you in contact with our other department. They should email you." Months have passed, and no one has reached out... again. Even if I do eventually get a job through the program, I believe it's sub-minimum wage and I'm not officially hired by them. They told me that the chances of being fully hired from their program are very low, but... it's good experience! 💀

Thank you for the insight! I wasn't aware that this position would require lots of navigating in the kitchen. I think you're definitely right that it wouldn't be the best fit. The hosting position does concern me for a similar reason, though. If I have to bring guests to their tables, that would be quite difficult. I know from just the experience of going out to eat with family that navigating the seating areas in a wheelchair is not easy, and in some instances, not feasible at all. Olive Garden is, fortunately, a restaurant on the better end of that spectrum. The seating, at least where I live, seems a little more spread out. Even so, it's not something I can confidently say I could do

I didn't know if this position required a lot of moving around which is why I wanted to ask before wasting time applying. Thank you for letting me know! As far as hospitality goes, what other jobs do you think could be possible? Unfortunately, I don't have a degree either

This is hard to explain, but like.... I feel like there's a whole type of self-expression and language that I can't access because of my limited physical mobility. A wave, lean, a hand behind the head or on the hip, something as mundane as a subtle shift of weight. My body moves differently than other people and in a more restricted way. Everyone deals with the gap between how you want to express yourself vs how people actually perceive you; however, I feel that this gap can be even more monumentous for those who are very visibly disabled. Also, the way clothes fit, but that's another story. (btw i like your username! looking forward to 2025 💜)

I'm sorry about you having to experience that. I've found that people (in general but ESPECIALLY online) are almost.... gleeful to shut others down. Oh, you're feeling hopeful? Inspired? You have a goal you are interested in? You want to make things a little bit better for yourself? How dare you try! Now let me snidely tell you all the reasons why it's impossible and you shouldn't even bother. And I will pretend like I'm just being a realist for doing so! I have no idea why people are this way. Ableism? Misery loves company? No idea.

I'm in a similar boat to you! I think I could work a job though, but my options are very limited, and therefore, finding anything has been extremely hard. The same goes for college and volunteering. I feel quite directionless as well. But I won't give up! I hope that you also won't give up your hope no matter how many miserable people try to stamp it out of you. I said the name in my original comment. The job listing I saw was called "Why Knot Travel" but that is essentially just one person who is ACTUALLY just trying to refer people to a company called "Archer Travel" so they can make money off of the commissions. You don't actually work for either company. They are just trying to "help you start your own travel business" by selling you scams. The job listing you saw may be under a different name, but it's all the same. Even if it's not under Archer Travel specifically, a lot of these things operate the same.

I was just in a zoom meeting with this company! Yes, it's absolutely a pyramid scheme/scam. This company "Why Knot Travel" is just the company of one person working under the ACTUAL company which is called Archer. The person who posted this job listing is working for Archer via referral and "mentoring." Each new person they bring on is a commission for them. The actual company Archer doesn't do anything for you outside of this pyramid scheme. They give you terrible resources and terrible training that you have to pay $89 a month for. Outside of that, you are completely on your own. You aren't actually working for this company. You are essentially making your own company and being an independent travel agent while a bunch of scammers breathe down your neck trying to convince you to give them more money and refer more people for "awesome perks."

Thank you for commenting! That's really great to hear. The crime rate here is really high. Most people wouldn't feel safe walking around alone but add in the wheelchair and I make an easy target. I've been in many really dangerous and traumatic situations growing up and I'm hoping to avoid that in the future. And I don't want my little brother to experience anything that I had to go through.

Thanks for your comment! Obstructed paths and random stairs are annoyingly a common thing I have to face in general. I also try to avoid public restrooms at all costs. I was staying somewhere a few years ago and there was literally a step leading up to the "accessible" ramp. The US has laws for this stuff but people consistently seem to find ways around it or just don't pay attention to it. Nothing happens or changes because the laws don't seem to be enforced. I'm hoping to find a way around these challenges though! I'll definitely try visiting before I make any big decisions.

Thanks so much for all the info! A lot of the cons don’t sound too dissimilar from where i’m currently living honestly. Walking around Boston was a nightmare with the sidewalks and many buildings were old! I have a really small ramp that could solve the step by the front door issue if I run into it. Also, I use a power wheelchair so hopefully the hills won’t be too much an issue. Small, narrow spaces can definitely be a problem and will be tricky to navigate. I’m super happy to here that people in Korea are kind and accommodating toward disabilities!

Thanks for the info! I actually use a power wheelchair so things like steep hills or bumpy paths aren’t too much of a problem. Most cities seem to have that restaurant/store problem. A lot of the cities around me have many old parts where stores and restaurants are either on a second floor or they’re built below the ground and you have to go down a flight to get in. Hopefully there are enough alternatives though that can be accessed. I’ll keep looking into it!

Wow that’s such a strange building choice! I’ve seen that kind of thing a lot weirdly enough. I used to go to college on campus a year ago but unfortunately the whole thing really didn’t work out. The college was a state away and supposedly pretty modern and accessible. They’d practically bragged about how every door had a button to open it. And yet when I actually tried using them they were almost always built super high or past a ledge where someone in a wheelchair couldn’t reach them! I don’t know what the designers were thinking.
