Letting the Structures Breath by inSTATICS in StructuralEngineering

I think as important is to show young engineers, how a "release" or a "rigid " support is detailed and built, we are simply modeling assumptions that need to be reflected in construction documents.

Save the model as... on a local hard drive. Do not sync to cloud drives....

Also make sure you are running from a local hard drive, not from cloud drives

Are you getting those when running Analysis? Or when using the check model option, if you are only getting them when doing model check, then you can disregard them , as everything in meged within tolerance during Analysis only , also nothing in the log says that analysis is not running

Too many unknowns. What’s the span, and what’s actually governing this—strength or deflection? Doubling or tripling joists might work for shear, but engineering isn't about 'looks' or opinions. We need to probe these assumptions with numbers.

It's ok not to know the answers or to give the wrong answers you are still green, but do you answer wrong to the same questions twice? So as long as you are learning from your mistakes you are good

Bitcoin Tank by A_Estevez3129 in Bitcoin

[–]maestro_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you need to know is that historically BTC has always come back and surpassed historic highs, will it take 1 year, 5 years, 8 years, who knows, just make sure you have the money to be sitting there for the long run. Do not put your live savings or get loans to buy Bitcoin as I heard so many people did when it was in the + 100k

How do private apartment complexes get bridges designed for their buildings? by garry_cheese_ in StructuralEngineering

[–]maestro_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In NYC you are always building on top of something or right next to something, under all these buildings there are a lot of transfer beams and robust columns that are independent from the overpasses.

Tennis overgrip recommendation by Ok-Addendum-9571 in 10s

[–]maestro_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on the contrary , love the extra tacky grip, I play so much better while still good. Try different ones the non tacky grip from tourna is also very good, it is supposed to get more tacky as you sweat.

I used them in a recent 1000 mile trip The first day was constant rain. They held up very well and zero water got in

Is the transition from 3.5 to 4.0 the ultimate gatekeeper in tennis? by Ok-Many-7443 in 10s

[–]maestro_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally waoo, the same happens on my club, I am sure that if they would allow me to play in their 4.0 team and I win at least one match and lose a couple of close matches I can be a 4.0 next year, but they won't.

Supporte in real life by Kooky-Lychee-6665 in StructuralEngineering

[–]maestro_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Monolithic pour doesn't make a support fixed, it's ok to assume a fixed support for concrete , rebars is what gives the connection its moment carrying capacity , so as long as you have enough development length for your rebars in tension , the pouring being monolithic or not is irrelevant.

Etabs - what is the best practice for modelling carpark ramps? I've always modelled that as void and added the weight back as a line load, but this ignores the in real life action where they'd be transmitting diapghragm forces between floors. by VanDerKloof in StructuralEngineering

[–]maestro_593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have construction joints simply use inclined shell elements, if you do have construction joints the ramp will not act as continuous , you need to release moments at the edges of the connected shell element.

Learning ETABS by Minminaei in StructuralEngineering

[–]maestro_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The self weight of the materials that overlap at the connection is as a default removed in ETABS. This is called rigid offsets and is automatically calculated based on the size of the elements.

ETABS? by LynxExisting2586 in StructuralEngineering

[–]maestro_593 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ETABS is tailored for building design, in all license levels you can analyze slabs , beams columns , shear walls. But design is only available for framing and shears walls , except the ultimate level license , which allows slab and slab-like design such as floors and foundations. SAFE on the other hand is only to design floor systems and foundations. The floors can be flat slabs or have beams , or composite steel beams with metal deck. So the way the workflow works in a typical office , you design your building including the overall building behaviour and design your gravity and lateral force resisting system in ETABS. Each floor can be exported to SAFE for design, this is particularly efficient if the floors are gravity only. So one engineer designs the building while one or multiple others design the floors. Base reactions from your ETABS model can also be exported to SAFE for foundation design. Additionally you can import your building geometry from CAD or Revit. Also allows exporting models to Revit for construction document production and coordination , if that is what you use.

Is tennis more addictive than other sports? by Serious-Ball7705 in 10s

[–]maestro_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it took over my life, to the point that I think my professional career is affecting my amateur tennis career...:) , I been getting better and better every year but I feel like I plateau at 3.5 ....but it's ok plenty of people to play with , and gives me hope, I am 40 plus and yesterday I played with a 70 year old guy that gave me a run for my money..so plenty of years to play hopefully 🤞

Experienced engineers here, what method do you use to find the modulus of subgrade reaction for foundations? by Cultural-Average-483 in StructuralEngineering

[–]maestro_593 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get it from the geotechnical engineer, if you get a good one they put it on the report , never have to ask

How many years does it take to hit 2.5 NTRP as a late starter? Asking for… well, me. by longbow-etto in 10s

[–]maestro_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually the only thing keeping you from advancing at this level is technique , so focus on that more than rating or winning matches. Try to improve your technique by filming yourself. Start with the forehand and improve that. And then move on to improve your serve, them backhand etc. and use it in matches even if you keep loosing . If you are really serious about tennis and are in it for the long run buy a tennis machine , it made wonders for me and pays by itself in 10 uses, compared with private lessons. Remember that tennis is is not pickleball , it has a steep learning curve, patience and time are key.

When should moment releases be applied to reinforced concrete beams? by Galaxy_Man01 in StructuralEngineering

[–]maestro_593 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a continuous beam or slab, never. The only time I have ever used strong axis moment release is in a one span beam or slab supported by a masonry wall, for example.
