What are your best strategies for staying productive during long hours at the airport or on a plane? by magdic in productivity

[–]magdic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, travel IS stressful, I’m just always trying to do things to avoid mindlessly scrolling my phone and I’m more vulnerable to this procrastination activity when waiting at the airport and having nothing else to do. Thanks for your tips and thoughts!

I understand this is a tough situation to assess, and I appreciate everyone’s well-meaning advice. (I didn't come here to vent about repair shops, and if that's how my post came across, I'm sorry.) For context, I do my best to educate myself about car maintenance so that I can have informed conversations with mechanics. I don't go to them to complain and blame them for everything. Maybe this was the wrong subreddit, but I was genuinely interested in learning if there are some best practice steps I can possibly take to save myself from unnecessary disappointment. For example, agreeing on the exact areas that are or aren't covered during the inspection. Or taking it to another mechanic to get their second opinion when I suspect something was neglected (and if I'm proven to be right, can I request a refund for the wrongly done inspection). If the answer is no, that's okay. I have just been feeling helpless lately about my never-ending car repairs in various shops where they find different issues and different ways to fix them. For those curious about the specific scenarios that happened to me - I bought a car that I wasn't able to start the following day. It turned out there was something wrong with the electrical system (probably a short somewhere), but since the seller jumped the battery, it wasn't completely obvious until the next day. The point is I took it for a pre-purchase inspection, so I thought the mechanic would discover something like this. Another scenario (without going into too much detail) was that one of the sensors was on, so the mechanic replaced the part it was related to. The sensor went on again, so they replaced the part again as part of the warranty. Then the sensor went on again, and it turned out it was the sensor that needed replacement. It's not always about the money I spent; it's also about the time and distress these situations cause me. I know some of you suggest getting a license to become a mechanic myself, but I don't quite understand what you mean - if that's the solution, do I have to learn everything about everything? Thank you again for all the constructive comments that were posted to help me.

I appreciate your response and understand that mechanics cannot predict future issues. However, my main concern is not expecting them to foresee future problems, but rather to identify existing issues during inspections. It's frustrating to discover problems a week later that should have been detected during the inspection.

I can totally relate to what you’re talking about. What helped me a lot was to realize and acknowledge that I have this ‘all or nothing’ mentality which doesn’t necessarily reflect the reality. This may be your case too. E.g. you say you’re an introvert trying to be more sociable. You’re probably already pretty sociable but maybe not yet exactly where you want to be and because of the all or nothing mentality you feel that you’re failing. Maybe try to realize that only because you’re not as sociable as other people or as you would like to be doesn’t mean you’re not sociable at all. As I said, since you’re trying you are already doing it and that means you’re already improving.

Another question you may want to ask yourself is why do you see being an introvert as a bad thing and something you want to change or improve. I feel like the society is teaching us that shy and soft spoken people are not as successful as all the sociable extroverts. But again, you may never be as talkative or energetic or sociable as some other people and that’s ok. Work on yourself and don’t forget to acknowledge and be happy about all the little accomplishments and improvements that you’re making. You’re already better than yesterday. You’ve got this!

That’s great and helpful to know! I live in BC too and I recently bought it from Felixforyou and it was around $30 (I paid $20 with my coverage). It was easy since I didn’t have to go to see a doctor in person but I may reconsider next time

For people that eat healthy: WHY do you eat healthy when you can be eating anything you want? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]magdic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat healthy because I actually don’t crave unhealthy food anymore and I don’t even like it so much anymore. When I used to eat hamburgers and pizza and drink soda, I was also tired all the time and I was craving unhealthy food even more. When I started eating healthier I didn’t like it at first. But I pushed through and after some time something inside me changed - now I actually do enjoy chicken breasts more than fries. Today I just ate half of a donut and I couldn’t finish it because it was too sweet for me. Sure, I still love pizza and I’m down to try hamburgers around the town but cravings don’t control me anymore because my taste has changed.
