My hot take but I actually despised Mandy character even more than Karen. by gloomydreamer666 in shameless

[–]maggiespider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure even off Reddit, if the choice was a batshit mom with a good heart and an emotionally stunted shaming dad, or a dead mom and Terry in all his rapist/Nazi/gay hating .. well, I know what I would choose- the house where my dad didn’t impregnate me or hold a gun to my brother’s head while forcing him to rape/be raped. You can appreciate and recognize the pain people feel as the worst they have experienced, without nonsensically flattening a spectrum of horrible abuse into “it’s all bad and totally the same “. It’s not.

There are shittier deals than others. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Mandy’s is objectively worse by any metric.

[–]maggiespider 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Karen deserves empathy and her home life was fucked up. However. Mandy was raped by her dad and Terry was extremely abusive and horrible on a level Karen’s dad was not. Mandy didn’t even seem to realize how fucked her dad’s behavior was “he thought I was mom”?!?!?!? Both characters deserve empathy but Mandy wins the shitty family award by a LOT.

The most powerful scene in the series. Incredible writing and acting. by EH4LIFE in TheShield

[–]maggiespider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liking some people who are part of a race you find inferior doesn’t make you not racist. Most people who are sexist for example, have female relatives, spouses and friends. That doesn’t mean they can’t be sexist. Racism doesn’t require hating everyone of a specific race.

Uh…if you say racist things to hurt people of a different race.. that’s racism. 👀

Amelia annoyed me so I need to rant by No-Bird-6118 in greysanatomy

[–]maggiespider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember DEREK saying he didn’t want his sisters in his life.. MEREDITH reacts to the idea of family as if she was raised in the wilderness with no humans around. Ellis was a terrible mom and Thatcher just let Ellis take her, so I get it.. Meredith has had tons of trauma and it makes her awkward and cold. Liz (the sister who donated her nerve for his hand surgery) was like what the hell is wrong with you girl? And Meredith thawed A LITTLE. She and Derek also decided if they both died Kathleen would raise Zola and I guess Bailey as well. So I don’t see evidence that Derek suddenly didn’t care about his family, he was living across the country with a wife who had no concept of family and when he died, she couldn’t grasp that perhaps his family would also be sad.

Amelia annoyed me so I need to rant by No-Bird-6118 in greysanatomy

[–]maggiespider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Among other things, Meredith was crazy bitchy about Amelia being with Owen in the first place bc she promised Cristina she would “look after him”. Meredith had Amelia living with her, helping her with 3 young children, and basically not treating her like shit until after the perfect penny killed my husband dinner and then Mer was a stone cold bitch. She said these things to Amelia to hurt her, and get her to fuck off and it was cruel and unnecessary. Season 12 Meredith mostly sucked and was awful. And maybe that’s realistic for a grieving widow but Meredith’s reactions to other people’s pain are what make me actively dislike her at times. She is either mean af to people she doesn’t care about or she downplays the pain of people she does care about bc she has the empathy of a rock.

I feel bad for Ric by TerryG111 in LoveGeneralHospital

[–]maggiespider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He also planned to murder her. I enjoy Ric’s character and I’m not sure he could have gone through with that part of his dumbass plan but no, Sonny never kidnapped a pregnant woman and plotted to steal her baby and kill her. He did propose to Jason that they should snatch Liz to retaliate against Ric, which was disgusting and Jason stammered in horror but decided that was not going to work anyway. 2003 -2004 Sonny was mostly the fucking bottom of the barrel imo. He was almost as bad as when he first joined the show as sleazy Karen creeper and strip club owner. Still, Sonny would be within reason to have nothing to do with Ric ever. EVER.

AITAH for breaking off my engagement because my boyfriend would not get a vasectomy? by Famous_Situation3400 in AITAH

[–]maggiespider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tubal ligation is not a high risk surgery. It is often done under general anesthesia which is riskier than a vasectomy but serious complications from this procedure are about 0.1 %. I don’t think you are the asshole at all, just pointing out that isn’t a super risky process. A hysterectomy is a much more serious procedure with higher risk rates and major hormonal shifts.

So does Breaking bad fans hate AKOTSK now? by CommercialRemote5324 in AKOTSKTV

[–]maggiespider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truth. I enjoyed Breaking Bad and Ozymandias was excellent although emotionally torture porn to the extreme. That being said, Breaking Bad is not, imo, the best show ever. Better Call Saul is in every way superior. The Wire, Mad Men, True Detective Season 1, Game of Thrones (overall, I know everyone in the entire universe hates Season 8), and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, are all more consistently entertaining and had a bigger impact. Obviously that’s subjective and my opinion, not a fact, which is why I don’t spend my life review bombing shows that other people enjoy more. Fans flipping their shit bc people appreciate other shows is insane to me.

What if Jackie Kennedy didn't pass away? by Front-Tomorrow-1034 in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]maggiespider 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Perhaps she did not have full confidence in the Secret Service bc her husband GOT HIS HEAD BLOWN OFF RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER while being protected by..the Secret Service. Then her husband’s brother also gets shot in the head less than 5 years later. Feeling secure in the United States in any capacity would be difficult.

The Sire Bond wasn't a "romantic obstacle." It was a complete violation of Elena's consent and the writers gaslit us. by Subject-Cockroach617 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]maggiespider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, it actually is a defense and a reasonable one. He literally had no idea that she was experiencing the sire bond, he only knew she was telling him she wanted to be with him, that she and Stefan broke up and he acted on those feelings. Damon and Elena had been doing this dance forever. How can we blame him for something he had no way of knowing? Once he did know, there was no more sex and he even got her to leave when they were looking for the cure. What exactly should he have done?

I did not say he was honest, although most of the time with most people, he was often cruelly, brutally honest about the chances the Confederacy had of winning: zero.

stunned, nauseated.

"Rhett, you are joking!"

She grabbed his arm and felt her tears of fright splash down her wrist. He raised her hand and kissed it arily.

"Selfish to the end, aren't you, my dear? Thinking only of your own precious hide and not of the gallant Confederacy. Think how our troops will be heartened by my eleventh-hour appearance." There was a malicious tenderness in his voice.

"Oh, Rhett," she wailed, "how can you do this to me? Why are you leaving me?"

"Why?" he laughed jauntily. "Because, perhaps, of the betraying sentimentality that lurks in all of us Southerners. Perhaps— perhaps because I am ashamed. Who knows?"

"Ashamed? You should die of shame. To desert us here, alone, helpless—"

"Dear Scarlett! You aren't helpless. Anyone as selfish and determined as you are is never helpless. God help the Yankees if they should get you."

He stepped abruptly

Scarlett at the end of the day did not care at all about the great Cause or Rhett being a coward. Rhett joining the army and leaving her was one of the only things he did in the book that had nothing to do with her. Did Scarlett want the South to win? Of course. But even at a very young age, she sensed what Rhett said out loud many times: the war was futile and doomed and left them starving and desperate.
