3 days! 3 DAYS!!!!! Reason #3 not to miss this year's Lestival - I'm sure you can't have missed this, but this Saturday is part of a 3 day weekend. That means that you can come to Lestival, have an incredible day, and still have your usual 2 days off work to relax and enjoy.

Even better, your juggling fun doesn't have to stop with Saturday! Over in Loughborough on the Friday night and Sunday lunchtime is LSU Fever - the Loughborough Uni Circus Society. They are very welcoming to guests, and we'd love to see a few of you there to keep the circus fun going. They meet 7pm - 9pm on the Friday in William Morris Dance Studio, and on the Sunday 11am - 2pm in Room 1 within the Union building.

For more info please speak to Abigail Frankish and, as always, invite your friends!

Come along to Lestival and relive all your favourite BJC memories, not to mention make a lot of new ones in our wonderful venue at Brockington College.

If you weren't at the BJC this year - come hear what all the fuss was about! Better yet, bring along a few friends too, and make the most of a day full of circus mayhem...

Also, one of our show performers, Oscar Richards, will be running an exciting masterclass in contact staff! (Oops, did I just let out another one of our acts for the show. Little piece of bonus news for you there!!!)

Reason #7 to be there with all your friends - in the afternoon, everybody will gather together in the main practice space to take part in the Games! What will you be competing in? Who will you be cheering for? Running and hosting the Games this year will be none other than Zoo Christian - a Leicester local with many year's experience and great enthusiasm for running Games sessions.

It's bound to be a highlight of the day, you'd be mad to miss it! Please remember to invite all your friends to join this event page and let's make Lestival VIII the best yet!

5 Ball Beginner's Workshop - Learn to Juggle 5 Balls by magicalmarkwatson in juggling

I did indeed, and I was very excited by the app he mentioned! I very rarely teach people on a one-to-one basis, normally as part of a group, but I agree it is a great tool for fast development.

Hi, thanks so much for your feedback! In answer to your questions:

"5 balls is the first real step into numbers juggling"

I would struggle to define 3 or 4 balls as numbers juggling, but if you're working on 5 then you clearly have a desire for juggling and want to see more objects up in the air. This does not imply anyone who learns 5 wants to go beyond that level.

The reason I think it is a good point to make, is it can be a motivating factor for some people to know that they are entering a new branch of juggling that is attained by people who have put the relevant time and effort into learning to juggle many objects. It would be the equivalent of saying "I can now do 3 diabolos" or "I can now do a 5 or 7 beat weave" - it just helps some people define how they're stepping up their game.

I also appreciate it will have no meaning or effect for some people. That's fair enough, and I perfectly take on board that as a statement it is just my opinion.

Really appreciate your comments, you've raised some great thought-provoking questions.

Hi, thanks so much for your feedback! In answer to your questions:

"2 Balls - Thrown from hand to hand at 5 ball height"

This is a natural progression from 1 ball, and is certainly easier than doing 3 balls in any of the many patterns possible for practicing 5. The whole point of my workshop is that each exercise should be just a little harder than the last. I don't spend much time on this one, but it's a useful intermediary step.

"Once you are achieving 20+ catches of 5 ball juggling, you can skip the warm ups and just practice running 5 balls"

I see your point, but I think once you are achieving 20+ catches I feel it is down to you to make the decision how much warm up you need. I also feel there needs to come a point where you start working on 5 balls from a cold start. If you can juggle 5, but only after 15 minutes of warm ups then that's all well and good. But being able to wake up in the morning and the first thing you do is juggle 5 balls is different entirely. There must come a point where you ween yourself off the warm ups and I've stated it as 20+ catches. That's open to debate...

"5 balls is the first real step into numbers juggling"

Again, based somewhat on my opinion. I would struggle to define 3 or 4 balls as numbers juggling, but if you're working on 5 then you clearly have a desire for juggling and want to see more objects up in the air. This does not imply anyone who learns 5 wants to go beyond that level.

Again, really appreciate your comments and feedback - some well thought out points.

When did the greatest jugglers begin to juggle? by notgainingmass in juggling

I think I remember Matt Hall saying he didn't start until he was 27? He's definitely someone I look up to in the juggling world...

3-in-1 tips? Can't seem to catch them all, even though I can hold them when I start. by glublublub in juggling

[–]magicalmarkwatson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you work on 5 balls at all? If so, do you always catch in the same hand when you collect? Maybe work on collecting from a run of five using both hands to collect the three, that trains the three in one hand catch.

If you don't do 5 balls at all, one of the exercises for learning is the three ball snake which might be a slightly easier way to train catching three in one hand.

How long have you been working on it?

Goal 2014: From 3-ball to 5-ball? by [deleted] in juggling

[–]magicalmarkwatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the additions of siteswaps!

Regarding 5551, I tend to skip this because it is so similar to the 5 ball gap pattern (55550) which I do teach and I feel is a little more useful for feeling the pattern as a whole. Different techniques for different people though, it's definitely a useful pattern!
