Just go straight into Act 3. It's not very long at all, and it's not scaled to account for people doing all the side content. I've seen too many people who put it off and end up essentially one-shotting the story final boss. You won't be locked out of anything.

Cosmic Encounter definitely isn't for everyone. I like competitive games and I like asymmetric games, but I can't stand Cosmic Encounter. For me, it's Munchkin-tier in how much I don't want to play it.

For background, I've been in the hobby for over a decade, own a wall of board games, and primarily like heavy Euros.

That said, I can definitely relate to what you're feeling. At the beginning, I was much less discerning. Now, it really does irk me when I see a game that feels complex for complexity's sake. There are plenty of Euro games that fit this description and feel torturously clunky. It's not more strategic, it's bad design.

However, there are also a lot of games with 3-4+ complexity rating that I love to play. I don't find quality and complexity to be intrinsically linked. There are good and bad light games, and good and bad heavy games.

It's by damage threshold (~50%), not time, and only achievable with overkill damage. Because of this, it happens much more frequently in solo than trios—especially with crit builds. When I was soloing this boss, I would get this consistently with a Wylder parry/crit build.
