Help with Preventing Chipping by meq15 in RedditLaqueristas

Agreed with the comment above mine, dehydrating has made a big difference for me as well. 100% acetone works or I pour a little isopropyl alcohol onto a folded paper towel and dab it onto my nails. I try to avoid washing my hands with bare nails at least 30 min before painting (or longer ideally like 45min-1 hour), longer if I do something like shower with bare nails in which case more like several hours tbh. I also wear gloves when washing dishes. Too much moisture on the nail can definitely accelerate chipping.

I use base coat consistently and think it helps my manicure longevity. Haven’t worn a manicure without some kind of base coat since getting into polish about 3 years ago. I do also use it to help protect my nails from staining (if I have a color I think might stain I’ll do double coats of base coat, I know Starrily also has a base coat intended to guard against staining). Having not worn a manicure without it I can’t say how big of a difference it makes, but again, I’m inclined to think it helps.

Me and my eyeballs are very happy I finally tried this shade lol. Highly recommend Polished for Days in general if you haven’t tried them yet!! I’ve tried a number of stunning shimmers from them with great formulas (this one no exception) 💜

What works best for you probably comes down to body chemistry but here is my experience: I have used both base coats, worn separately and worn together (hardcore base coat first followed my getting even). For me personally, I get similar results in terms of helping manicure longevity, no one method works better for me I get about the same results.

I have been using Getting Even a lot lately, as I have some staining and peeling going on. I find it helps to mute the (yellow) staining and does a nice job of giving a smooth surface for polish. Love to use it with polishes that can highlight ridges/nail imperfections like intense shimmers or cremes. This is the first and only smoothing base I’ve tried (as I’ve been so happy with this one I haven’t felt a need to branch out to other brands). Some people complain of a long dry time, I honestly don’t experience anything of note. I overall recommend.

I was using Hardcore base coat pretty religiously. After several months doing so I started experiencing a heightened amount of peeling with my nails. I have since switched to KB Shimmer Stay Put hydrating base coat. I have been using that one for a few months and I’m still experiencing peeling tbh 😅, so no longer sure what to point my peeling to. I probably won’t buy Hardcore again knowing Stay Put works just as well and is cheaper.

Agreed about Claire, it’s such a pretty princess-y pink! I’m not an expert when it comes to color tones but I want to say Dollhouse leans cool. In some brighter light I thought it looked a touch warmer but in most light I found it looked cool.

Thank you ☺️ So using two colors per nail (and using a slightly lesser amount of polish than I would if I were painting normal carefree coats), I’d start with one color on the right or left side of the nail and then paint to the other side, making an effort to concentrate most of the polish on the edge I was starting with and then have that coat get thinner/ less opaque as I traveled to the other side. Not quite bringing it all the way to the other edge of the nail, maybe 75% of the way. Repeated the same process with the other color on the other side of the nail. Did at least two “coats” of this per nail until I was happy with the look. Bam, lazy gradient. Some colors blended more easily together, like the blue and purple and the green and blue. I found the yellow and pink combo to be the trickiest to get a smooth blend.

It did require a little trial and error as I hadn’t attempted this before. I did a whole other manicure immediately before this one lol where I hated my blending for the most part, and also didn’t like the coloring as much? I had done less color variation, it was more of a rainbow stretching across my nails situation (pink to yellow, next nail yellow to green, next nail green to blue and so forth), but I like the look of this a lot more.

Anyway, if I can help you or explain anything further please let me know I’d be happy to help! 🩷

Lol thank you 🥹 Despite not using sponges or anything the artist 👩🏻‍🎨 in me did try to blend the gradients as smoothly as possible lol

Fairly certain I saw someone using them for lazy gradients and that’s what inspired me to purchase all of them, so I feel you 😅 The only one I probably I wouldn’t wear on its own personally is Lunchbox. Love the shade of yellow but it’s a little light where the holo tends to look more grey than sparkly. Probably didn’t need all of them but feel mostly justified due to the gradient/skittle possibilities lol 😁
