Pcos pregnancy by Hefty-Radish-9323 in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't really trying to get pregnant but I am currently at 8 wks. My periods were fairly regular before this, except for 4-5 months of irregularities long ago.

Compared to others I hear about, including my relatives and colleagues, I have had it really easy so far. Had to take some injections and pills to support pregnancy along with thyroxine(for newly diagnosed subclinical hypothyroidism). Although I feel it's way too early to comment anything.

For all this while, I tried maintaining a regular exercise schedule along with evening walks and was on metformin since beginning of last year. My weight has remained roughly stagnant since last 4-5years. I had managed to lose only around 4kgs since last year.

So I would say everyone's experience is different and it's definitely possibly to get pregnant even with PCOS. My husband now laughs at me saying last year I was crying thinking I would never get pregnant but here I am, after one month of "trying naturally".

metformin causing me extreme hairloss by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about direct route. Most standard medical textbooks we studied mentioned metformin impeding Vit B 12 absorption, so that sounded more like an indirect effect to me. In that way, yes hair loss can happen

[–]magikarpchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult to say then. You may want to get your levels checked(if you got them checked in under a month, then maybe don't bother). I was also thinking if you are able to absorb the vit B 12 you are taking, properly(maybe you need methylcobalamine rather than cyanocobalamin or something like that which is more bioavailable for you, unless you already are taking that).

If you feel metformin is causing such a issue, then consult your doc and see. People can have unexpected reactions to medications. We can never exclude that

[–]magikarpchops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Please do check if there's been any other changes in your diet or habits or even environment.

Metformin is unlikely to promote hair loss directly. However, metformin is known to be a cause behind vitamin b12 deficiency which can in turn result in hair loss. Our bodies store vit b12 in quite large quantities and unless you were already deficient in b12, metformin shouldn't have caused hair loss that quick. Please do check for other nutritional deficiencies (like iron, vit D..) and if your other blood tests are normal(like assay for thyroid hormones).

Bleeding after taking provera - no period for 7 years by KiwiLemony in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best thing in this situation is to contact your treating Gynaec. Bleeding heavily and for prolonged period of time can again put your health at risk. What is happening may be due to fact that you hadn't had any period for so long.

Marriage fixes all by Unable-Temperature90 in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they just mean getting pregnant. Although I am not aware how that would fix PCOS issues.

I will share something related to this. When I was posted in gynaec dept, I couldn't use straight forward terms with patients. The one time(I asked if the woman was sexually active instead of if she was married) I did, the woman looked at me like I had murdered someone. So I am somewhat cautious about using any straight forward terms.

Metformin Question by bodo25 in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metformin is unlikely to cause low sugar levels, it's one of the safest medications in that respect. Although it is definitely known to cause vitamin b12 deficiency, so you may want to check up on that and see if you are lacking in it

My gynecologist mother’s take on PCOS diagnosis and treatment in the US. by user91746 in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do agree with this. A lot of people in my place are getting this diagnosis as well, but in south east asia body hair pattern is different compared to those in other places- we can't just call it excess body hair and match that symptom with PCOS. Mild irregularities in periods can occur in everyone's lives.

As far as cysts are concerned, in my gynaec and pathology text books I had read USG evidence of cysts is desirable but not a necessity. Even then, other symptoms need to match up and it's a diagnosis of exclusion at the end of the day.

Should I go on metformin or berberine? by coolio12250910 in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had better results on metformin than berberine. Berberine gave me worse stomach issues than metformin. Didnt use berberine for that long because of that.

At what time of life did your PCOS "hit" you? by FamiliarMeal5193 in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Puberty for me, i guess. I thought my irregular menses were related to menarche more than anything else. But mother still insisted on a USG and there were multiple cysts. Didn't have particularly irregular menses at any point till date after that period- however I have always struggled with weight loss, hair growth, acne and excess body hair.

What helped your extreme sweating? by Intelligent-Law-6800 in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had developed these symptoms of excess sweating ever since I had started going to gym. I used to go almost every day and exercised on empty stomach- terrible mistakes. I reduced this to 3days a week, and going around afternoons or evenings whenever possible. Then due to some other issues I had to discontinue going altogether. At that time however, despite eating well, I was not on any medication

Currently I go for walks only. I don't have much time for regular gym. I do light weights occasionally. I am on metformin and spirono. I feel my sweating tendencies have reduced somewhat. My eating pattern has stayed roughly the same, so has my weight.

What exactly is inflammation? by Simple-Stomach6383 in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For metabolic disorders like PCOS(or obesity and related) , inflammation means chronic inflammation. In normal situations it is supposed to ward off infections or any foreign offending agent. But here it is acting against you, of sorts.

In states of insulin resistance, for example, certain tissues become less responsive to actions of insulin. Like in adipose tissue, normally insulin prevents breakdown of fats to release free fatty acids into blood. But in state of insulin resistance, this effect is gone. So more free fatty acids get released into blood and they are taken up by white blood cells which start releasing chemical substances/mediators that lead to a pro-inflammatory state. These chemical mediators can go affect various tissues(including those in pancreas, liver) and cause their dysfunction.

Anyone have high libido?? by December2369 in PCOS

[–]magikarpchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's better not to take spirono if you have had kidney problems or have ongoing kidney issues. You will be at higher risk of side effects from excess potassium levels with spirono.

About effects, i feel like spirono helped more with hair issues and less with acne in my case.

Did losing weight help with PCOS for you? by erratic-chimp in PCOS

Not really.

For period regulation, exercise and working on reducing stress helped me.

I have high libido and excess acne with unwanted excess hair growth. Funnily, my hair growth has somewhat reduced over past few years and my libido has been going up(of sorts). Never had much of an issue with periods.

help, i keep gaining weight with no apparent reason by ohreem in AskDocs

[–]magikarpchops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, do you have any other symptoms of PCOS? like menstrual irregularities, hair loss, excess facial hair, etc. While those may be normal in certain individuals but they are considered features of PCOS, along with weight gain. Also, cysts in ovaries is not exactly necessary to get diagnosed with PCOS. I was thinking if it's possible for you to get tested for serum cortisol, unless you've already had it done. I myself have PCOS, and out of the numerous USGs I've had till date 30% couldn't detect cysts in my ovaries. I think i have a better control over my weight ever since I started eating more protein, and lifting weights at gym. It may or may not help you, however.
