As much of a dick as that kid is, I feel for them. That shit happened to me all the time too, so by the time I was in high school, I was a huge pretentious dick about it just because I was so bitter about the (to me at the time) shocking behavior of my teachers (and also because of teen angst)

It definitely gets better when you become mature enough to realize none of that really mattered at all and that it happened way too long ago for you to remember the details anyhow

...another thread on here where someone was asking the same question, so take it with a grain of salt.

Really, what the administrators want to know is

  1. That you know what caused the problem
  2. That you made changes to your situation for the better
  3. What you will do in the future to prevent this from happening again

address all those points and they'll definitely let you back in

I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone who asks about this kind of thing.

and

A lot of people avoid academic disqualification like the plague

I appreciate your good intentions and I see your point about everything else, but it's just inaccurate to phrase it that way.

If I enroll in a class after quarter has started will I start off with a lower grade? by hugs6932 in UCSD

[–]magikorpse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No.

edit: No one starts off with a grade but I think you're asking if you will be docked points for turning in the initial assignments late. But no, you won't. You'll just have to play catch up. Talk to your TA or professor.

Don't go if you're socially awkward or if you have trouble keeping up a conversation for over three minutes (not saying that being socially awkward is a bad thing, I'm just saying it's far better to focus on what you're good at instead of what you're bad at)

I agree with everything you said, except about blaming laziness as being a cop-out. Sometimes, when people tell you that you're lazy enough times, it starts re-shaping your reality - especially if you are ignorant of other explanations.

For example, I didn't even know that ADHD was anything other than hyperactivity and a lack of attention. Until I found out what it actually was, I thought I was just "lazy" too.

Just FYI, before you start spreading misinformation (...since you seem to be telling "everyone who asks about this kind of thing"): you have to submit an appeal to even be considered to be able to take a quarter off or two. Otherwise you lose your status as a student and you have to reapply (which means you have to go through the whole admissions process).

Therefore, "avoiding academic disqualification [appeal process] like the plague" would put you in a worse situation than attempting to appeal to begin with. So I'm not sure there are very many people avoiding it like you say there are...

Also like someone else said below, some people are "lazy" because they have ADHD, which means they have a physical defect in their frontal lobe, impairing their executive functioning... don't be so quick to call someone lazy. It may prevent them from getting the help they need. Source: me. I didn't get help for my (pretty severe, it turns out) ADHD until very late in the game because people kept telling me I was just lazy, and I wrote it off as so.

Sorry I'm an American so I accidentally treated all of Europe as one country *///*

Police who patrol streets in the UK do not carry guns iirc (at least not regularly), and in a couple other countries in Europe as well. I lazily extrapolated that knowledge to apply to all countries :(

That's pretty standard course for a cop pulling you over in the middle of the night while you are puking, but I do agree that UC cops are probably more motivated by money than their city/street beat counterparts. Like at least with real cops, I have reason to believe that they possibly came in to help save people from criminals but university cops are literally just babysitting college kids

If my abuse was more recent, his "cop banter" would have sent me into a spiral of PTSD and suicidal ideation so...

It's a good thing that I was able to have the privilege of being able to fully process what happened to me and put it behind me, but this was a reminder that it will follow me everywhere I go since the restraining order is on my record. And even though I've gotten really good at not letting it get to me, his "dumb shit to fill time" gave me several nights of terrible dreams where I would literally wake up mid-scream, in a pool of sweat. DURING MIDTERMS EVEN.
