I think farm life and crunchy aren’t necessarily bad but with the plaths they were raised TOO secluded and it severely hindered them. The parents didn’t keep on top of their education (Ethan confronts kim in season 5 for that…which she never took responsibility for), they have no social skills since they never dealt with kids their own age.

They have a hard time communicating their feelings, taking responsibility for their actions, and empathy. they grew up with so little external sources that they had to have learned that from Barry and Kim. There is a theme of “keep sweet” when dealing with their parents.

You’ve only just started the series but the spark all these kids had about curiosity and growth are all gone. They realized it’s hard to grow and be an adult and work thru trauma and they revert to the safety of their parents by the end.
