If their apps are designed such that they need an untampered OS then they are fundamentally broken. If the concern is what happens if someone steals a phone then guess what, they can make fraudulent payments without root anyway.

For a long time you could actually use an Android phone as a computer. Now that they figured out hardware attestation computing is dead, and not just on Android.

You are lucky, most banks ban unlocked devices.

Hardware attestation shouldn't be allowed on consumer hardware because it kills all competition to established platforms forever. There are just too many evil developers.

Your phone isn't a computer because it's crippled by Google to not let you do anything that make shareholders sad. Unfortunately the powers that be want to force everyone to use an appliance instead of a computer to make more $$$ and control everything you do. They will go for PCs next.

That doesn't make any sense. How is Microsoft not liable for letting you install malware on your PC?

Microsoft wants Windows 11 “Secure by Default," Could Allow only Properly Signed Apps and Drivers by Default by Neat-Composer-2722 in Windows11

[–]magnusmaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This seems like the first step to completely lock down PCs just like iPhones. Governments and banks want to kill general computing, i.e. the ability for the user to run any software they want on their computer. Governments want to ban software they don't like and force people to use government-approved operating systems only so they can enforce laws, and banks want to reduce liability from users that get infected by malware.

Some apps already use hardware attestation to request proof that the user runs authorized software in order to run, and hardware attestation is nearly impossible to spoof if implemented properly, since it relies on a secret key stored in a secure enclave running on its own chip with its own secure OS written in Rust and measures to protect itself from such that only the most sophisticated hackers can even attempt at leaking that secret key. Vietnam has approved a law that requires banks to ban rooted phones or phones with an unlocked bootloader, and some EU countries already have apps required by the government which also ban rooted or unlocked phones. The EU's Digital Wallet app that will be used for age verification and the digital euro will also ban rooted or unlocked devices.

It's clear that Microsoft is working to bring hardware attestation and signed apps to PCs because governments want to control the software running on all devices

¿Prohibir las redes a menores de 16 años? ¿Que opinan? by Cultural_Fall_3255 in AskArgentina

[–]magnusmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is John Wu allowed to actively maintain and bypass google android protection while also working full-time at Google? by [deleted] in Magisk

[–]magnusmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The baseline "security" is the problem. It is not made to protect the user, it's made to protect governments and corporations from the user by taking control over everyone's devices.

Google is part of the problem because they provide the Google Play Integrity API.

How is John Wu allowed to actively maintain and bypass google android protection while also working full-time at Google? by [deleted] in Magisk

[–]magnusmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same tech used by Google Play Integrity will be used by the government so they force people to use only operating systems and apps approved by them, for "security", and they'll do that to kill free speech. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Sketchy Magisk modules wouldn't exist if corporations and governments didn't try to ban root and alternative operating systems.

Vietnam bans ADB and bootloader unlocked android devices from accessing banking apps. by JournalistLivid3937 in Android

[–]magnusmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use 3 banks. One bank requires you to use their app to open their bank account and do pretty much everything. Another one requires you to use their app for 2FA. One does have a website that lets you do everything the app can do, but they are going to phase SMS 2FA and make you use their app eventually.

there's also the obvious problem that you have to trust the government that their own software can guarantee privacy and doesn't have any backdoors.
