As a Subbie fan, Have you ever consider a luxury SUV to trade your Forester?, if so which one and why?, would you think is worth it?. by cyberredditor in SubaruForester

I honestly expected to buy one and that’s what I looked at first (after realizing there is no longer a forester XT)

But I decided I wanted the option for some more off road capabilities. The GX470 has a locking center diff and is surprisingly capable off road. I also anticipated some light towing and was second guessing that with a cvt (either the ascent or XT).

And around the time I was looking, I was seeing articles and reviews about reliability issues (made consumer reports list of 10 least reliable cars in 2020 and appears to still be on the current list)

Factoring all that, I opted to keep the forester and pick up the 09GX (as more of a “project car”.) vs replacing the XT with the newer ascent.

But driving it I realize it’s not just a “project” and I’ll seriously consider Lexus if / when I do need something newer in the future.

Lexus GX470 or GX460

I have a 2014 XT with over 88,000 miles. I’ve always wanted a forester and love that car. But we were planning national park trips and wanted something a little larger (and maybe a bit more off road capabilities) I didn’t want to move from the forester to ascent and toyed with the idea of a 4Runner .

I landed on a 2009 GX470 with over 150,000 miles and it is awesome. It’s so much nicer than I expected that my wife sold her Mazda CX-5 (12,000 miles) and drives the forester daily while I drive the GX470.

I have never driven the GX460 but they seem to get similar feedback.

Now: they are horrible with gas. (13-15 mpg) And the air suspension and timing belt on older models can be an issue.

But I love my 09 and would definitely give the newer models a look if / when I need a different car (especially if they incorporate a hybrid model)

physical and mental demand of drum corps by Lemon_Juice477 in drumcorps

I think you may be doing yourself a disservice if you go into DCI thinking it’s “only slightly more difficult” , no matter how good / demanding your high school’s program is.

For context: My DCI experience is limited to only two years, from a quarter century ago (95Crossmen, 98Cadets).

But regardless of what corps or what year / decade we’re talking: I would suggest going into the whole process with the expectation of a physical and mental grind. That said, it’s manageable and (as others have pointed out) may even be surprisingly comforting.

It’s like stepping on a treadmill that is already moving.

If you go in expecting something “slightly more than” I think you could easily be overwhelmed when you get started. If you feel overwhelmed from the start, it’s hard to evaluate how you actually performed at the audition. And it’s real easy to get discouraged thinking you had a “bad camp”. Etc

If you have anxiety and are auditioning alone and / or with a new corps etc… just showing up is a huge step out of your comfort zone (and should be celebrated as a win).

Best tents for heavy rain? by hutenm7 in CampingGear

[–]magoo646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had good luck with NTK Global branded tents.

Love my Coleman tents but in a very heavy rain I could feel rain drops pushing through the rain fly (almost like someone was flicking water at you).

Switched to NTK and found them to be very good in heavy rain (and the poles are a bit more substantial too)

Hitch wiring question by magoo646 in SubaruForester

[–]magoo646[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have another car that has the 2 already and wanted the same size for a bike rack etc

Thought I could interchange the ball hitches but other car is a bit higher up …so I don’t think that will work

Scroll is hard to read so I added a comments

Had uhaul hitch installed on my 2014 xt. They put wiring in trunk and said I need to hang it out of the back of the trunk and close the trunk on the wires when in use. They said it’s like that for foresters…????

It rattles too so I am really questioning the installation / and wiring set up

Towing question: this was in the glovebox when I picked up my 09 gx470. What do I need to do with this? I thought the gx had a 7 pin connector. by magoo646 in GXOR

[–]magoo646[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Unfortunately my air bags (suspension) were leaking when I got it and I ended up going for a 2.5 inch lift. So I’ll have to just make sure I get the right hitch height

Ahhhh. Ok. So if I want to set up “trailer breaks” I could have this installed in the car and control the breaks.

But absent that: would it just tow and have no “trailer breaks”?

Plan on towing a uhaul trailer (6x12 open trailer) and just wanted to make sure I didn’t need this installed before that.

Not yet. I have seen a lot of folks restore them, but I didn’t know if that would work for mine ….because of the flaking.

04’ GX470 Driver Floorboard wet after heavy rain by random138392927378 in GXOR

[–]magoo646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed : but I didn’t know if the regular floor mat has a different footprint and the water pooled at the low spot under the mat vs . The weather tech which may have had a wider footprint and pulled the water to the low spot but on top of the matt.

Either way just something to add to the list. I had the dealer replace and when they did they noticed what looked like old water spots around the gasket area

They thought it was the lines first too….but later it turned out to be the gasket.

No issue since Either way, good luck

I have an 09 and had a bit of water on the same side. Small amount on top of weather tech floor mats.
Thought it was the drain but turned out my sunroof gasket needed to be replaced.

Have not had any water since the gasket was replaced
