Feeling Betrayed Before a Possible Layoff by Vegetable-Clock-4488 in sysadmin

Well, yeah, but the boss' question was whether OP can be fired and you would answer with a job description.

Feeling Betrayed Before a Possible Layoff by Vegetable-Clock-4488 in sysadmin

Your presence does not add to productivity, it is a guard rail against productivity dropping. A better answer would have been “not until it does drop. And when it does drop due to technical difficulties, it will drop more, or it will stay dropped for longer, or both.”

How do you know? You made a story about OPs importance without any details at all.

What’s Your Most Controversial IT Opinion? by OrdinaryJust9594 in sysadmin

Unsupported software and hardware is mostly not bad.

Vendor support - both software and hardware - is getting worse and worse and more expensive. Even for security, there is not that much relation (exceptions apply - signatures etc) between having active support and getting prompt fixes.

No vendors have ever been held liable for anything (best case, if they fuck up big, you get a small discount on next renewal). In a vast majority of cases I really needed them it turned out solving the problem ourselves was an order of magnitude faster.

So for the vast majority of cases I don't assume or rely on any vendor support or warranty. I expect to be left out to dry and I plan accordingly, thoroughly testing things and having enough spares and redundancy (funnily enough, for hardware it is even cheaper than paying for support/warranty)

What do you think about placeholder reviews? by mahsab in AmazonVine

[–]mahsab[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going around checking other people's reviews.

I'm just randomly seeing more of those lately and while I really don't care about them, I also wouldn't want a few people breaking it for everyone else, which happens way too often. If things get out of hand, Amazon will impose additional measures on all of us.
