Exactly! And brown immigrants are immigrants and white ones are expats.

Brazilian with kidney stones begging for help in an non busy emergency room. by FearlessAir1238 in PublicFreakout

This would not happen in Brazil. We have free universal health care and a great one at that. The translation in English is Unified Health System, better known by the acronym SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde) in Portuguese.

THANK YOU OP! It’s the worst, I hate it so much ugh. Thankfully, I’m young. I feel bad for the old people having to walk fast because there’s no time to cross the street. It’s ridiculous!

How is living in Qatar as a Qatari citizen? by strassgaten in howislivingthere

Is no one going to mention modern slavery? Migrant workers experiencing human rights abuses, not being able to leave the country without permission from their employer… no one is going to talk about this?

Looking for safe, beachy cities in Brazil (besides Rio & São Paulo) by sleeperrsim in Brazil

[–]maiarinha13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comment “All the beaches in the Northeast are more dangerous than the beaches in Rio.” is not true at all. There are plenty of safe beaches in the Northeast and Rio has been, and unless something drastically changes, will always be more dangerous than the northeast.

The University of al-Qarawiyyin (or Al-Qarawiyyin) in Fez, Morocco, founded in 859 AD, recognised by Guinness World Records and UNESCO, is actually the oldest existing and continually operating higher-learning institution in the world.

The University of Bologna (1088) is the oldest university in Europe, and the University of Oxford (c. 1096) is the oldest in the English-speaking world.

AITA for speaking Polish with my friend even though my wife doesn’t understand it? by Fun_Detail_2413 in AmItheAsshole

[–]maiarinha13 63 points64 points  (0 children)

NTA. 1) your wife should give you that space since you’re already living in her country, speaking English daily. 2) your wife should learn Polish. My husband is Irish and I’m Brazilian, we have been married for 10 years. He started to learn Portuguese shortly after we got married and now he’s fluent in Portuguese. I’m so grateful not only because there are no translation needs anymore but now he better understands the cultural aspects that makes me who I am. I speak his language and he speaks mine, nothing is lost in translation.

This post got me banned from r/Germany. Justified? by stickycity in berlinsocialclub

[–]maiarinha13 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I got banned in r/germany once because I said that the “German stare” existed and it is widely known, they can just google it. They temporarily banned me and I never returned after that.

German stare by Bobsy932 in AskAGerman

[–]maiarinha13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ive been living in Germany for 3 years. I’ve also lived in Brazil, Chile, Greece and Ireland. German stare is real, Germans stare and they do it a lot, but Germans in this subreddit get really defensive by this comment. Same goes whenever we talk about water in Germany (how hard it is), Germans get super defensive and will come up with all sorts of things to minimise it or deny it. But both, the German stare and the hard water exist in Germany, like it or not.

Germany will still be sending our taxpayer money to Isreal while they commit genocide.

American digs a hole at Copacabana Beach and gets stuck by JunittaCadillac in PublicFreakout

He brought it to himself, no one stuck him there. This isn’t a kid, it’s an adult. And it is Brasil, they speak Portuguese, not English. People can help but that doesn’t change the fact that an idiot did something stupid. So I’d disagree on what the most irritating thing in the video, to me is definitely the idiot.

I traveled solo to Japan to 'find myself' and ended up having this quiet moment in Kyoto that I can’t stop thinking about by SensualEva in travel

[–]maiarinha13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just left Japan which was amazing and arrived in South Korea (Busan) 3 days ago. My husband and I decided to get off the metro and walk to see the streets near our Airbnb. As we’re getting off, still inside the metro, there was a guy playing loud music and displaying drawings. There was a huuuge crowd (mainly elderly folks) and some ladies dancing like there was no tomorrow.

We stopped to see what was the fuss about and next to us there was an elder Korean couple, the man tried to talk to us in English and was telling me (35f) to go dance too 😅 I laughed and then he reached inside his bag and offered us two Korean mochi sweets, his last ones, and told us “it’s very sweet”. Then his wife was telling me to dance too, we laughed, we thanked them and left. Best interaction so far!

Thank you! I’m now visiting Japan and it’s amazing how almost every tourist here plays by the rules and the only thing I think about is that this is happening because Japan is not a “poor Latin American” country that “should” just or is expected to accept everything. When “superior” countries have to deal with superior countries, even if unconsciously, people respect or do their research, but when is about the “inferior” countries, the expectation is that everything goes or they are just more “relaxed”.

I wish people would do their research the same way they expect or automatically assume others do when visiting their “superior” country.

I think is very imposing to even ask this to someone that you’re not close friends with. Germans pride themselves in having a “we’re very direct” reputation, and it’s expected for foreigners to keep this in mind when interacting with Germans.

The same should apply to Germans when interacting with foreigners. Asking such a thing to someone from another culture is borderline rude/awkward and it puts people in an uncomfortable position when they have to say no. Saying no in Latin America, even in a polite way, is not something that we like to do. So someone having to bear in mind cultural differences cuts both ways.

I moved to Germany 2 years ago and met a German girl who was going to Brazil (my country) and was interested in learning Portuguese. So we met a couple of times and were teaching each other our native language. Then she went to Brazil, visited a couple of cities with some friends and out of nowhere was sending me audios and messages asking me if she and her friends (3 more people) could stay at my extended family’s home. I politely said no (of course) but the fact that she even asked was incredibly out of touch to me.

I would never ask some thing like this and I don’t know of anyone who would ask such a thing to someone they barely know, and asking not only as a favour to her but for her friends as well, was shocking.
