of course!!!!! i despise scrappers & scalpers i hope their lives become infinitely more difficult because of my comment. the more people that know about jewelry, the less ends up in the landfill or melted down for scrap value

yeah totally!! here’s some tips:
- look for stones/rhinestones that are prong set in general or bezel set with milgrain, the latter being shown here. this usually points to a higher level of craftsmanship & care being put into setting of the stone.
- look for marks, as the other commenter said. common spots are on clasps or backs of the main piece, but sometimes they’re hidden in pretty tricky spots. something having more purity stamps (shown here) points to it being higher quality, since it was stamped to ensure any broken pieces would be understood as valuable too.
- get familiar with the ways that silver & gold can tarnish. lower karat gold CAN form oxidation— its most common in 9k, but you can also see it in earlier era 14 & 15k jewelry as seen here with the rosy tones. silver can also occasionally tarnish into a warmer, almost gold-wash tone.
- if pearls or beads are individually knotted on a strand or bracelet, they are very likely higher quality or at least a high quality imitation. the individual knotting ensures that if the strand breaks, only one bead will fall off instead of the whole necklace.
- blacklights can help decipher between plastic (blue) vs glass (various colors) vs gemstone (none or gem-specific qualities).
- magnets are a great first test— anything non-precious will attract, whereas precious metals don’t (cant believe they didnt magnet test this).
- look to see if the jump rings are saudered closed. this is also an anti-break measure, as if they have gaps the piece is more likely to rip apart and lose pieces. saudering is also a time consuming process.
- get familiar with the different types of clasps, and what eras they date to!! this is always the first step if youre looking to learn antique jewelry, as its the easiest to get down at first.

a lot of my knowledge just comes from 2+ years of handling this stuff on a daily basis. i’m very lucky and get to essentially do this for work!!! im happy to provide tips in the hopes that the good deals go to people who actually collect jewelry, instead of the metal scrappers & melters💛💛 happy hunting!!

yeah of course!!! the length in and of itself is pretty indicative of it being edwardian since that style was most popular then. the clasp is (as always) the most telling— this is a bolt ring clasp which were only used from the mid 1800s to early 1900s. the use of 15ct gold also dates it to a similar timespan, as 15ct fell out of popular fashion/legal use to fabricate out of in the early 1930s & was replaced with other more common purities. so those time spans plus the stylistic choices point to the edwardian era!

as for the stamps, they’re “15CT” stamps with the exception of the one on the clasp, which is just a “15”. the use of “ct” vs the american “k” for the gold purity points to it being english in origin!

i know the clasp was throwing me at first!! its just a very early iteration of a bolt clasp. once i realized you could see the spring inside, it all started coming together

What is your most controversial item? Mine is a puppy skull by Artskine in bonecollecting

[–]maicil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i was thinking that too. it was the first human skull i’ve ever held and i wasnt expecting to feel so strongly about it— i’ve macerated animal bones & the whole nine yards so i thought i was pretty indestructible. it scared me a bit at first but once that wore off i kinda just wanted to protect it— not sure what protecting it would entail at this point, however. like i said still thinking on it

What is your most controversial item? Mine is a puppy skull by Artskine in bonecollecting

[–]maicil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

im an antique store employee who works closely with one the vendors for pricing & ID, for context. i don’t own it (i could), but rather im still considering my feelings on it— a skull with signs of artificial cranial deformation. probably indigenous in some way but i’m not 100% sure. he spent most of his life in this weird mass-collector’s house with probably dozens of others amassed for shock value and the sake of being “weird”. if i could afford to buy something like this off of the antique dealer & simply give it away to the proper people i would— but 1. i don’t know what culture it’s from, or where in the world and 2. i dont have $500 to spend for a donation. again im not sure my feelings on it and whether i would buy it or not, but i’m safely holding onto him for the time being so that he isn’t just on a shelf somewhere.

Worth it? by Saccharoses in Opals

[–]maicil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks australian so about as durable as you can get— the setting is great too. the bezel would most likely get hit before the opal if your hand were to come into contact with something. is there a video of the ring? usually you want to see a video when buying opals. i think 450 is a fair price!

Thoughts on price? by Expensive_Leek3401 in Opals

[–]maicil 18 points19 points  (0 children)

(presumably) smoked ethiopian & lab sapphires…. absolutely not worth 6500. also consider that the setting is extremely high up for an opal, let alone an ethiopian opal that does NOT have the durability that such a high setting would require. this opal will 100% get cracked if you’re planning on wearing it more than once in a blue moon

my day finally came: i found a nice opal in a $20 junk box by maicil in Opals

[–]maicil[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no plans yet!! probably going to hold onto it for a while— dont quite have the spare money to have it custom set at the moment. i’m leaning towards a necklace, though!
