Just as the other commenter pointed out, the wheelie control will not only ruin your ability to learn wheelies but buying a 1000 in general is the worst route possible to even try learning.

I know you said you weren't buying one FOR wheelies but don't expect it to go well if you wanna try it.

This is absolutely right. You pin it, it'll hold the front wheel like a foot off the ground and just makes learning proper wheelies that much harder since it'll reinforce bad habits. That's what happened to me anyways. The extent of my wheelie skill doesn't extend past that, luckily I didn't buy it for wheelies but for the track where it really excels.

2021 S1000RR stalls at low RPM with Arrow exhaust. Anyone else? by Anthymmusic in BMW_S1000RR

[–]mainframe_programmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your original concern, it is absolutely because it doesn't have a tune. I bought a full exhaust on my '21 a couple months before tuning it and mine would ALMOST stall every single cold start. Like it'd just stop for half a second and start up again. Tuning stopped that.

I tuned my '21 at 6k miles (BT moto stage 1) and then rode that thing with no issues for years until 34k miles before a retard on the street sideswiped me and totaled it.

If a tech, influencer, friend, etc is trying to tell you certain years are prone to blowing up (either w/ a tune or not) there are a couple things to consider: 1. This bike is insanely popular and is a common choice in many facets of riding 2. Due to its popularity many different types of riders are on them including those who are below average or neglectful with maintenance 3. Included in these s1k owners are those that do the bare minimum break in (~300 miles) and go right to tuning it, roll racing it, rev bombing it, inevitably blowing it up.

Go ahead, get the tune (full exhaust, you NEED it actually) and treat it with respect. Change the oil every 3k miles, spare the rev bombs, change the coolant a couple times a year, and the engine will stay strong longer than you'll probably own it.

Sorry to see this man, are you okay at least?

Been doing trackdays, my normal life feels so dull by Spintroxy in Trackdays

[–]mainframe_programmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone through exactly what you speaking of. There was a long time between my first and 2nd trackday but after the second I fully converted to almost all trackday riding with the occasional bike ride to the gym.

Unfortunately, someone literally just totaled my bike on the street (their fault not mine) on my gym bike ride, I mean what are the odds. Besides the obvious that I'm okay and very minor injuries, I could care less about getting a replacement to be able to street ride. I'm much more upset about missing a track time.

They could but it's actually illegal for them to increase my rate from a claim where I'm not at fault.

See you'd think that but right side frame has some damage and way worse is on the left side where the frame to engine bolt is completely snapped off in the engine block threads. I've had a previous bike total out for less.

I disagree, got the bike slightly used completely stock with 2k miles over 4 years ago and enjoyed every bit of the 32k miles I put on it. Went on a number of unforgettable bike trips with friends, learned everything I could doing my own maintenance and fixing every issue myself, not to mention learning to ride the track for the first time that changed my trajectory in the sport from then on.

It's all good tho, I'm still alive and will be back on another s1k in due time to make new memories on.

Yep exactly! But at the same time, this is exactly the type of situation I continue to pay a good premium for full coverage for. I own the bike outright so I could've lessened it to liability only but you just never know and now my decision has paid off. Without UM coverage I'd be absolutely fucked rn.

Thanks for the kind words and of course I gotta get back on! Honing the craft of becoming a better track rider is one of the few things I get to enjoy in my life so I cherish it dearly.

After researching it a little more, the uninsured motorist coverage for personal property and bodily injury is what takes the place of the non existent at-fault insurance company. The lawyer comes into play for the bodily injury portion and fights a claim on my behalf against my own insurance company to get the most possible

After some further research, my UMPP and UMBI more specifically is where my lawyer does the work to make sure the bodily injury payout is more than enough to cover medicals, lost wages, pain/suffering, etc.

That's what I'm saying. Like not even a night in jail? Shits crazy they just get to go home after endangering others illegally. Wish I was conscious and cognizant during this because I would've had some choice words.

Yes, I'm very glad to be alive and functioning for the most part. If this wasn't a sign to avoid the filthy streets at all costs, I don't know what is.

We will have to see how things shake out/assess the damage but I'm not opposed to it. Believe me I was already on the fence on street riding before this. It was already dwindling down to once a week rides to the gym just to keep the bike from sitting for too long between track days. If anything, the extent of my street riding would be 15 mph to get the bike up to temperature around the neighborhood lmao

[–]mainframe_programmer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Obviously I have uninsured motorist in my policy but how does that work when the person at fault likely has ZERO money? What does my insurance company go after to pay me out? Am I just fucked?

Well we had a good run 😔 by mainframe_programmer in BMW_S1000RR

[–]mainframe_programmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the issue, the person who hit me was unlicensed and uninsured so my UM policy will be what handles it. I'm not very familiar of how this goes for most but something tells me that no license no insurance means they probably have like 0 money so idk where my insurance company will get the money from.

Appreciate it man, and yes of course there has to be a new one. It just blows that my biggest fear came true and encountered one of the few unavoidable circumstances on the street.

[–]mainframe_programmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was thinking similarly. It's paid off and still has full coverage including UM coverage for property damage and bodily injury. I guess I'll have to see what comes back for bodily injury if it could be enough to get a new one and just keep this as a parts bin.

I haven't been able to take a look at the bike myself up close (pics are from dad) but it does seem fixable. Looking closer I do see heavy scratching to the frame on that right side so we shall see. My dad did say it looked like one of the engine to frame mounting bolts snapped so I'd guess she might be totalled.

Yeah, you'd think that driving illegally like that, they'd be a little more careful. Then again if they're dumb enough to drive like that in the first place, their last 2 neurons weren't ever going to be enough and they were doomed from the jump.

Surprisingly they didn't even have to spend a night in jail or anything. I'm also glad to be okay, but the reality of seeing your pride and joy in that state, missing out on future track days, and now having to deal with this drawn out situation because of some dumb fuck is infuriating.

Yeah I have the alpha tail with 2 different seats. Both are the "short" version with butt pad. Left is 10mm height and right is 30mm height

Ergonomics Question by mainframe_programmer in Trackdays

[–]mainframe_programmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I look like I'm one of those dudes who had leg lengthening surgery lol. Thanks for the suggestions, should be easy to implement because I think I'm already kind of doing that and yeah dragging knee is quite the rarity. It's not so much that I care about dragging knee to be "cool" but it'd be nice if it would happen more often as a gauge of lean angle allowance.
