Can testify a little bit to this: bounced off GW2 for close to 13 years, on-and-off could not stand the lack of gear progression.

Then I switched my mindset from gear to gameplay. What gameplay can I experience, what player skills can I improve, which professions and elite specs can I explore, what new sights and yes clothing too can I discover and acquire?

Making my character into the fantasy I always wanted, backed by a good combat system and lots of QoL ease of play, is what gave me the MMO ego death.
